.SYNOPSIS...
Behind an exiting system, lake effect snow is expected tonight
through Saturday night, with accumulations concentrated towards
the eastern Finger Lakes and higher terrain south of Syracuse.
At least scattered snow showers and flurries can be expected
elsewhere, including possible brief squalls. After high pressure
provides a break Sunday, another system comes by Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
905 AM Update...
Back end of synoptic snow is still making its way through the
area. Once that finishes, and as we get into peak daylight hours
which will promote more melting on roadways, we anticipate
being able to drop the Winter Weather Advisories ahead of their
currently scheduled expiration times. For now they remain in
place. We have received numerous 2-5 inch reports throughout
the advisory area; even 4-6 inches or so in Susquehanna-Pike-
Wayne-Luzerne.

Decisions on lake effect will be made today; impressions for now
are that confidence in localized amounts of 7 inches or more,
has increased for at least portions of Cayuga-Onondaga. Also, it
has been noted especially via the Canadian-regional model, that
there may be significant inland extent with the bands as we head
into Saturday, courtesy of upstream Lake Huron-to-Lake Ontario
connections, and favorable thermal profiles/instability in the
dendritic growth layer. This could take accumulating lake effect
right down into the Catskills NY-Far northeast corner of PA.
Even outside of primary lake effect, there appears to be some
potential for snow squall clusters for much of the area. We will
continue to assess that today.

Previous discussion...
Steady accumulating snow is over the advisory area but still
mostly light. It could become a little heavier this morning. The
snow is ahead of a surface front with lift from a short wave
and jet at upper levels. Additional snow amounts of 1 to 3
inches. The snow will end from west to east from late morning
into the afternoon. It will end before the advisory expires.
Winds will continue to be light but will shift from east to west
today. High temperatures will be in the low and mid 30s with
the warmest areas from Elmira to Wilkes-Barre where the snow
ends first.

This evening lake effect snow gets started across our northern
counties. The low level flow starts off at 280 putting the snow
into Oneida but shifts to 310 during the overnight, but then
stays there through Saturday. The RGEM is the most aggressive
putting a band of moderate snow into Cayuga and Onondaga
Counties. The instability looks best during the day Saturday.
Other CAMs are not as bullish. The dendrite zone is around 5k
feet and in the saturated layer.

A winter storm watch is currently out for this area for tonight
into Saturday evening. This will continue given the uncertainty
and the best snow starting late tonight. The potential is still
there for 8 to 10 inches of snow in localized areas of southern
Cayuga and western Onondaga Counties. Lake snow showers could
extend well into NEPA and the Catskills Saturday. An advisory
may be needed for lake effect snow one county downwind of the
current watch.

Lows tonight will be back in the teens with highs Saturday in
the mid and upper 20s. With a decent pressure gradient surface
winds will be northwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts on
Saturday.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
420 AM Update...
Lake effect snow will linger through the first half of Saturday
night. However, high pressure building in from the west should
bring enough dry air into the region to cut off the snow showers
by early Sunday morning. Sunday is shaping up to be a decent
one, with sunshine and temperatures climbing to near freezing as
the ridge crests overhead. However, the high will slide off the
East Coast on Saturday night and our next system will be on its
heels heading across the Great Lakes. The timing of the
precipitation ahead of this next system should mostly hold off
until Monday, but it is possible that some light WAA snowfall
begins across our western forecast area before sunrise on
Monday.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
430 PM Update...
Latest model guidance are mostly in agreement with low pressure
tracking across Southern Ontario Canada on Monday and dragging
a cold front through the region. Fairly confident with high
precipitation chances for Monday with good agreement among the
models with the timing of the front. However, P-types are still
uncertain at this time, but forecast soundings are favoring
mostly snow everywhere early in the day, with possibly a
transition to light rain, especially across the southern
forecast area and in valley locations, as temperatures warm to
above freezing during the day Monday.

Behind the cold front, there is not going to be strong CAA, but
there may still be some lake response and some possible snow
showers along the NY Thruway corridor Monday night with
generally a west to east fetch off the lakes. For the remainder
of the week, the pattern is forecast to be mostly zonal with
several weak perturbations pushing across the region through the
week with snow/rain chances. Still quite a bit of timing
differences with these weak waves, so decided to just go with a
blend of model/ensemble guidance, which gives a low chance for
precipitation through the remainder of the week with the highest
chances coming on Thursday.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
With a system pulling out of the area this afternoon, visibility
restrictions will generally leave with it even as MVFR ceilings
persist; in some cases fuel alternate required. Colder air
moving in tonight through midday Saturday will get lake effect
snow showers going southeast of Lake Ontario. While a brief
snow shower cannot totally be ruled out late today-early
evening as a front passes, the main lake effect
concerns/associated visibility restrictions are anticipated for
KSYR late evening, shifting towards KITH early Saturday. During
the day, scattered lake effect snow showers and even isolated
brief snow squalls will become possible, especially in
afternoon. KSYR-KITH-KBGM will be the more vulnerable terminals.
For winds, light southwest this afternoon will veer west-
northwest behind the front tonight, increasing to around 10
