Water vapor satellite imagery this morning shows the upper level
low that crossed the region Thursday was over northeast
Minnesota/western Lake Superior. The low will move slowly to the
east today allowing another weak short wave trough to rotate
around it and over the region. The forcing from this wave looks to
be rather weak as forecast soundings for Medford are not showing
much in the way of vertical motion. However, a few of the hi-res
models are suggesting there could be a little bit of light snow
with this wave. Given the lack of vertical motion shown in the
soundings, will only add some flurries across the north for now.

As temperatures continue to plummet, overnight lows look like
they will fall below zero for the entire area with the coldest air
along and north of Interstate 94. Combined with a northwest wind
around 10 mph, wind chills expected to dip into advisory levels
for a few hours late tonight into Saturday morning north of
Interstate 94.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Now that the cold air has arrived, it does not look like it is
going be leaving anytime soon. Looking at the 04.12Z NAEFS, it
shows 850mb temperatures holding around 1 standard deviation below
normal throughout the upcoming week. The upper level low looks
like it will be near the southern part of the Hudsons Bay which
will allow it to keep slinging the cold air down across the
region. The coldest period during this stretch continues to be
centered on Saturday night into Sunday. Overnight lows are
expected to fall well into the teens below zero with the
possibility of some -20 readings over the far north. Given the
cold start with even modest recovery during the day, highs Sunday
looks to only reach the single digits above and below zero. This
also looks to be the most probable time for a wind chill advisory
with a northwest wind between 5 and 10 mph expected. Only some
slight moderation in temperatures should occur underneath the cold
air aloft next week which will keep overnight lows well below
zero and daytime highs in the single digits above and below zero.
The probabilities for wind chill advisories become less certain
given a potential drop off in the wind speeds. The best approach
with wind chill advisories looks to be to take them on a daily
basis when there will be a better handle on the winds.

With the northwest flow aloft, a short wave trough is expected to
drop out of western Canada and track across the Midwest Saturday
and Saturday night. The baroclinic zone by this time looks to be
stretched out from the northern Rockies into the Mid-Mississippi
River Valley. While the models are not showing much of any surface
reflection with this short wave trough, the best thermodynamic
forcing may stay to the south of the area. All the deterministic
models show the potential for some light snow across the southern
part of the area with some support shown by about half of the GEFS
and EPS ensemble members. Another wave will dive across the
region Sunday night but looks to possibly go farther south than
the one for Saturday. Seeing even less support from both the
deterministic and ensemble guidance for any light snow to reach
the area. However, enough members do suggest this as a possibility
to include a small chance across the south. This wave looks to
help spin up an area of low pressure at the surface that then
tracks into the Ohio River Valley Monday. Some suggestion that it
could continue to throw some light snow over the southern parts of
the area and will continue to the small chances into Monday for
this.

Northwest winds will gust up to 25-35kts through the period,
slowly weakening Friday evening. Some generally MVFR vsbys can be

Otherwise, predominantly MVFR ceilings are likely through at
least Friday afternoon with cyclonic flow aloft, although some
scattering of lower ceilings or VFR ceilings will be possible
overnight into Friday morning. A few flurries could occur under

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of north central
Iowa and northeast Iowa.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through the evening. While
most of the snow has or will be ending, northwest wind gusts up to
40 mph are leading to blowing and drifting snow. Localized
whiteouts can be expected along with significant drifting.
Travel will remain poor into tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Bitter cold air moves in starting Friday and remaining in place
for the better part of the following week. Wind chill advisories
will be needed during this period.
