...Quick hitting shot of accumulating snow...

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow to result in some
hazardous driving conditions.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Fast flow regime continues across the northern Conus, driven in
large part by extended upper level jet running from the northern
Rockies to the Canadian Maritimes. Shallow shot of cold air
advection sweeping across northern Michigan behind yesterday's
passing cold front, kicking off some light and disorganized lake
snows off Lake Superior. High pressure building steadily east into
the western Great Lakes, resulting in dry conditions across northern
lower Michigan. Next shortwave trough of concern is racing east into
western North Dakota. This wave will further sharpen as it digs
east, reaching our area this evening. Attendant surge of forcing and
deeper moisture...interacting with somewhat favorable lake
parameters...will set the stage for some accumulating snow by
Wednesday morning.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges:

Main focus on evolution of snow and attendant accumulations.
Headline decisions will also need to be addressed.

Details:

Quiet start to today gives way to increasing snow chances as that
upstream wave approaches. Classic "clipper" low type
characteristics, with a quick moving and relatively narrow corridor
of deeper forcing and moisture. Simple extrapolation suggests
corridor of strongest surge of -DivQ will slide across eastern
upper/far northern reaches of lower Michigan this afternoon, exiting
quickly off to our east this evening. Quick movement of system and
precipitable water values of only around a quarter of an inch
suggest "system" snow will run on the order of an inch or two (with
those higher amounts driven by decent omega centered in the
favorable dendritic growth region). However, low level airmass
remains more than cold enough to drive lake moisture contribution,
both ahead of the low an in post-frontal cold air advection regime.
Winds will be quickly veering as the low approaches/passes,
providing a brief window of south flow lake enhancement off northern
Lake Michigan. Flow goes northwest this evening, producing
additional lake snows into our more traditional snowbelt locations.
Best lake parameters overnight center across Lake Superior where
deeper moisture and convective depths will reside....with magnitude
of both dropping as one heads into northern Lake Michigan. Overall,
still looking at 2 to locally 5 inches of snow by evening across
eastern upper Michigan (highest totals across western Mackinac
County with that south flow enhancement), with an additional 1 to 3
inches tonight (highest in northwest Chippewa County). Snow totals
will taper off further south, with perhaps a few inches by morning
in northwest lower Michigan and areas near the Tip of the Mitt.
Winds will be bit gusty this afternoon and tonight, perhaps
resulting in some area of blowing snow.

As for headlines considerations: While specific snow amounts may not
reach warning criteria across western Mackinac County, expected
heavy snowfall rates definitely warrants ongoing winter storm
warning. Solid advisory totals expected across the remainder of
eastern upper...with eastern sections likely seeing some enhancement
off northern Lake Huron. Much tougher call across northern lower
Michigan. Expect lighter snows to spread overhead this
afternoon...with transit band of rather intense lake snows getting
punted quickly inland along cold front into northwest lower Michigan
later this afternoon and evening. Additional lighter lake snows will
target northwest lower overnight. With that said, overall snow
amounts look to remain below headline criteria (little doubt some
local areas will exceed levels). Tentative thought is to handle
expected hazardous driving conditions with special weather
statements as warranted.

High Impact Weather Potential...Moderate...some minor accumulations
of lake effect in typical NW-flow areas.

Pattern/Synopsis...Split flow across the CONUS breaks down, with the
Gulf states cut-off low phasing with the northern stream
Wednesday...longwave troughing quickly pushes off the Atlantic coast
heading through the night into Thursday. Cold air moving in behind
Wednesday's clipper will bring accumulating lake effect snow
Wednesday. Then more snow Thursday as a weak low passes through the
Great Lakes. Western ridging tries to strengthen, but keeps getting
beat down by shortwaves heading later in the week.

Forecast/Details...As we head into Wednesday morning continued CAA
and cyclonic flow will allow lake effect showers to linger through
mid-day at least. The coldest 850mb air will be moving overhead
through the morning, with deltaT's around 20C. Inversion heights
will still be around 6 to 7 kft before they start to sink in the
middle of the day. In the afternoon we start to loose additional low
level moisture and inversion heights sink further, as well as winds
backing out of the west then southwest in the evening as the surface
ridge axis moves into the region. While the lake machine may not
completely shut down in the afternoon and evening, snow shower
coverage/intensity will wane, and showers will be punted toward the
north, targeting the tip of the mitt then the southern shore of Ern
Upper in the evening. Mid level moisture returns Wednesday night as
we get on the backside of the surface ridging, along with some
enhanced moisture moving in from the west ahead of the next subtle
shortwave. Overall, Thursday doesn't look too impactful with light
snow moving through the region.

Otherwise temperatures will be a bit below normal Wednesday (mainly
in the low 20's) thanks to CAA, then in the upper 20's Wednesday.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Moderate to high. Monitoring holiday
weekend system

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Still looking at a quickly-moving wave
that races in from the Pac NW Thursday night into Friday. It dampens
a bit at it runs into ridging over the Rockies...and most recent
guidance has it tracking a bit further north than prior runs. This
wave induces pressure falls across the northern Rockies Thursday
night/early Friday...which eventually consolidate into a sub-990mb
surface low that may track to the north and west of the Great Lakes.
But again, confidence in this is low given very poor run-to-run
consistency and large discrepancies in how each piece of guidance
handles the evolution of the surface low. Temperatures may warm
enough so that precipitation starts as all rain Friday before colder
air switches things over to snow heading into Saturday. One thing
that there's more confidence in is gusty winds Friday and Saturday.
High pressure may keep the second half of the weekend quiet before
another system has precip returning early next week. Overall
temperatures warm well into the 30's Christmas Eve and Christmas
Day, before dropping back to normal readings.

The snow, for the most part, is done in N Lower for the night.
expect VFR VSBYs over the region with MVFR/VFR CIGs in typical
lake effect fashion. The snow looks like it would restart after
15z/Tue as it moves into NW lower and E Upper however, after
18z/Tue the snow will spread across the forecast area, and will
affect APN by that time. So, the expectation will be that as the
snow moves into the region, the VSBYs will begin to fall from VFR
to MVFR, and occasionally become IFR, which would last into
Tuesday evening. CIGs will follow a similar trend as the snow
moves through the region, with the VFR/MVFR becoming more MVFR/IFR
CIGs, also through 06z/Wed.

increasing in speed this afternoon ahead of an approaching cold
front. Winds go quickly northwest and continue to increase in speed

even a few gales on portions of northern Lake Huron. Gusty northwest
winds will slowly subside on Wednesday.
