.SYNOPSIS...
A frigid late January air mass will remain in place
through the weekend, although winds will be lighter this afternoon
into Sunday. A developing, slow moving coastal system will likely
bring accumulating snowfall to parts of the region Monday through
Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1238 pm EST...A 500 hPa closed upper level low continues
to move slowly east coastal New England this afternoon. High
pressure will be ridging in from south of James Bay for the
winds to decrease later this afternoon. Temps are still running
about 10-15 degrees below normal with single digits to teens
widespread across the area. Some lower 20s in the mid Hudson
Valley.

Some clouds mainly west of the Capital Region will slowly erode
this afternoon, as the ridge axis builds in across the region.
The air mass is very dry with a PWAT of 0.07" on the 12Z KALY
sounding.

Surface and boundary layer temperatures moderate slightly,
which will support temps a few degrees warmer than yesterday.
Highs today in the upper teens to lower 20s with a few mid 20s
mid Hudson Valley and some single digits to lower teens over the
southern Adirondacks and southern Greens.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Continued moderation of temperatures through Sunday night as the
ridge axis builds east. Storm system begins its approach from
the midwest and TN Valley Sunday night with high clouds
spreading across our region later Sunday afternoon and Sunday
night. The leading edge of snow could reach the western Mohawk
Valley, Schoharie Valley, eastern Catskills and mid Hudson
Valley by early Monday morning.

Lows tonight near or below zero again in many areas with around
10 below in northern areas. Highs Sunday in the lower to mid
20s with a few upper 20s mid Hudson Valley and NW CT. Lows
Sunday night around 10 to mid teens with single numbers northern
areas and upper teens mid Hudson Valley and NW CT.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
An active weather period here in the extended with not one, but two
storm systems that will have the potential to impact the forecast
area.

The main focus continues to be focused the a "Miller B" type system
that will evolve into a coastal storm/Nor'easter and is expected to
bring accumulating snow and wind to the forecast area Sunday
night/Monday morning through Wednesday.

Here's what you need to know since the previous updates:

1) Forecast models have shown a northwestward expansion of snowfall
that encompasses a good portion of the forecast area.

2) Forecast confidence is increasing on the fact that a good portion
of the forecast area will be impacted by this coastal storm.

3) Confidence is increasing that this will be a long-duration
storm with snow coming in as early as Sunday night/Monday
morning and persisting to Wednesday morning/afternoon.

4) There's a wide range in snow totals as our preliminary snow total
forecast ranges from 2 inches northwest to about 8 inches southeast.

5) This storm system has overachiever potential given recent model
trends and some of the items mentioned above.

Analysis:
We start off the period, Monday morning with coastal
cyclogenesis taking place just off the mid-Atlantic coast as a ~995
mb low. At this time, the forecast area will be placed on the
systems cold-sector. So precipitation type during onset of this went
will start off as snow. Snow will be underway across our southern
zones (south of I-90) Monday morning. With the coastal storm
expected to shift north-northeast during the day on Monday and into
Tuesday, snowfall and chance to likely PoPs will increase from
south/southeast to north/northwest. By Tuesday morning, snowfall
will be over much of the area have encompassed much if not all the
area with highest PoPs and snowfall rates being located along and
east of the Hudson Valley. Snow will persist through the day on
Tuesday becoming snow showers Tuesday evening/night. Snow
showers/flurries will persist into Wednesday morning/afternoon
before finally coming to an end. Snow to liquid ratios (SLRs) are
expected to be on the order of 9:1 to 15:1. Dendritic growth zone
(DGZ) will be between 550-700 mb with the strongest omega
values/upward motion being just below the DGZ. Omega values will
reach and possibly even exceed -1 Monday night through Tuesday
morning. This is when we expect for the heaviest snows to occur.

Blustery conditions via tightly packed isobars/pressure gradients
from the 995-990 mb Nor'easter will cause for some gusty north-
northeast winds which will result in blowing and drifting of snow
during this period.

The snow should come to an end during the afternoon hours on
Wednesday from southwest to northeast. Blustery conditions will
gradually wind down as the storm lifts further to the northeast
offshore.

That said, we should see dry and tranquil weather returning with
improving skies Wednesday into Thursday as heights aloft increase
and a surface high further builds into the region.

Focus then shifts to another storm system that will bring us our
next chance for some precipitation late week into next weekend
(Friday-Saturday). This looks to come in the form of rain
potentially transitioning over to snow as we start off in the warm
sector of the storm system. This storm system will come amid a major
large scale pattern change driven by a negative/neutral PNA, a -
AO/EPO block, and an MJO in phases 6/7.

As far as temperatures, we'll see an uptrend in temperatures as the
workweek progresses. Anomalies will run warmer than normal.

.AVIATION...
A cold and dry airmass will allow VFR conditions to continue to
prevail through the TAF period. Scattered lake effect clouds may be
around KALB/KPSF from time to time through this evening with bases
around 3-4kft. Otherwise, it will be mainly clear through tonight
and into Sunday morning as high pressure builds in. High clouds will
advance from the west late in the TAF period.

Winds for the rest of the day will be from the west with some gusts
to 20 kt at KALB/KPSF, lighter at 10 kt or less at KGFL/KPOU with a
brief southerly direction early in the TAF period at KGFL. Winds
will become light from the north tonight into Sunday morning.

snow. The snow amounts are uncertain at this time due to the
slow track of the storm. However, the highest liquid equivalents
look to be south/southwest of the Capital Region at this time.

Temperatures may moderate by the end of the week which may
result in some snow melt.
