.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure approaches from the west today, with a strong cold
front crossing the area tonight, bringing widespread showers
and embedded thunderstorms. Cold Canadian high pressure builds
across the region, bringing markedly cooler temperatures for
the end of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 345 AM EDT Wednesday...

Latest analysis reveals 1032+mb sfc high offshore of the New England
coast early this morning. To the west, a deep longwave trough
continues to pivot E-NE across the MS Valley toward the OH/TN
Valleys. The attendant (occluded) sfc low was analyzed over
Hudson Bay, with the sfc cold front extending back into eastern
MI SW into the southern plains early this morning.

Early morning radar mosaic showing moderate to locally heavy
rainfall lifting NE from the Mid-south into the Ohio valley,
aided by increasing WAA/isentropic lift out ahead of a weak
shortwave trough lifting across the deep south into the southern
Appalachians. Increasing lift/PW values will approach the
region over the next few hours, and expect some light
showers/sprinkles over the NC/ SE VA coastal plain by sunrise.
However, expect most of the sct shower activity this morning to
be with initial slug of overrunning moisture, lifting across
the piedmont toward RIC metro around and just after sunrise
later this morning.

There remains a dual heavy rain/severe threat across the local
area this afternoon and tonight, as Gulf and Atlantic moisture
continue to surge north ahead of the approaching boundary. WPC
Marginal Risk ERO and SPC Day 1 Marginal Risk remains in effect
area wide today. Heavy rain threat remains the primary concern
for the nw half of the area, especially from the I-85 corridor
up to the RIC metro and the eastern shore, as the shortwave
lifts along the approaching boundary. Despite some minor
lingering temporal differences, 00z/31 CAMs can agree on
periods of moderate to locally heavy rain in this area this
afternoon into early evening, as the approaching shortwave
lifts along the approaching front late today and tonight.

Meanwhile, as majority of CAMs still show showers becoming more
widespread across the NW half of the area through the morning as
deeper forcing for ascent gradually arrives...it appears more
and more apparent that the more widespread (pre-frontal) rain
showers hold off until afternoon into the evening across the
coastal plain. This does present a lower end, albeit very much
conditional severe threat for Hampton Roads into our NE North
Carolina counties in the pseudo-warm sector out ahead of the
trailing cold front. This severe threat will be mitigated to a
great degree by considerable cloud cover and late day/evening
frontal timing, which will help keep a lid on low-level
instability. Nevertheless, even while less than bullish with
potential for much in the way of sfc destabilization through
breaks in the overcast this aftn across the southeast, concern
for some damaging wind gusts with the main line of showers and
embedded storms this evening warrant continued monitoring
today, with more severe T-storm potential for the SE portion of
the area, especially given pressure falls on the order of
6-8mb/6HR between 18-00z. QPF generally 1" to 1.5" but locally
higher amounts possible in aforementioned central VA (I-85-Tri-
Cities/RIC metro) to the VA northern neck where banding is more
likely to occur.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 345 AM EDT Wednesday...

Showers move offshore Thu morning apart from a stray afternoon
shower as the upper low pulls across the area. Gradually
clearing sky (still partly cloudy) Thursday as cool Canadian
high pressure begins to build in from the west. Dry and cool
weather lingers through the end of the week.

Highs Thursday ranging from the upper 40s to around 50F NW to the
mid-upper 50s SE. Highs Friday in the upper 40s to around 50F. Lows
Wed night ranging from around 40F NW to the mid 40s SE. Much colder
Thurs and Fri nights with a hard freeze likely for most of the FA.
Lows Thurs night in the mid to upper 20s NW to the upper 20s to
lower 30s SE. Lows Fri night in the upper 20s NW to the lower 30s
SE. Climatologically, btwn April 1st-8th, only zones that would need
a frost/freeze headline are across sern VA/ne NC (basically s/e of a
ORF-SFQ-IXA line). Frost/freeze headlines not needed NW of this
line until after April 8th.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 345 AM EDT Wednesday...

Coldest night appears to be Fri night into early Sat as the
~1030mb+ sfc high pressure builds across the local area. Given
ideal radiating conditions (clear sky, light winds, dry
airmass), expect temperatures Fri night into Sat will be
similar with another fairly widespread freeze expected with
lows in the mid- upper 20s to lower 30s.

The sfc high is then expected to become centered over the SE
CONUS from Sunday into early next week, as the flow aloft will
be from the NW in a confluent zone between a mean trough off the
NE or New England coast and a mean ridge over the MS Valley.
This pattern will bring a warmup back to climo normals along
with dry conditions. Highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s on
Saturday, with lows in the 30s to lower 40s Sat night. Easter
Sunday looks dry and milder with highs in the mid 60s to low
70s. 00z Models a bit more unanimous with depiction of a weak
cold front dropping south across the region late Sunday into
Mon, as another area of high pressure builds S over eastern
Canada. For now it still looks dry through this period, with a
bit more uncertainty regarding temperatures. Following the
blends for now with highs mainly in the 60s to around 70F near
the coast to 70-75F well inland Mon- Tue.

.AVIATION /08Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 215 AM EDT Wednesday...

Latest analysis reveals sfc high pressure well offshore of the
New England/Northern Mid-Atlantic coast early this morning.
Showers out ahead of a strong cold front extend from the eastern
Great Lakes back into the north central Gulf coast. VFR
conditions across area terminals early this morning will slowly
yield to thickening/lowering CIGs later this morning, with MVFR
southwest of KRIC by 12z, reaching the KRIC terminal by 14-16z
this morning. MVFR cigs then develop at remainder of terminals
this afternoon after 18-20z. Some pre-frontal scattered showers
are expected this morning between 12-18z in the vicinity of
KRIC and KPHF, and could produce brief MVFR vsby if they were
to affect a TAF site. Additional showers and some embedded
tstms increase in coverage after 18z for the coastal terminals,
with MVFR cigs to become more widespread late this aftn and this
evening, with short-lived IFR/LIFR restrictions possible in
heavy rain.

Outlook: IFR cigs possible from RIC- SBY late in the forecast
period (21z-00z) through the overnight period. The cold front
pushes through the area late this evening into Thursday morning
with additional rain and degraded flight conditions. A NNW wind
has the potential to gust to 25-30kt early Thursday, especially
toward the coast. Remaining breezy Thursday as cool Canadian
high pressure builds in from the NW. This area of high pressure
then prevails Friday into next weekend.

.MARINE...
As of 350 AM EDT Wednesday...

High pressure is now well offshore with surface low pressure
centered near the Hudson Bay in Canada. A surface trough/cold front
extends well to the south of the parent low pressure, all the way to
the Gulf Coast. Winds across the local waters have decreased a bit
overnight and are generally southerly 5-10 kt. Waves in the Ches Bay
are around 2 ft while seas offshore are running 2-3 ft.

The aforementioned trough/cold front is forecast to approach the
region today and cross the area tonight as a secondary surface low
forms along the trailing front. SSE flow 10-15 kt in the Bay and 15-
20 kt offshore will continue in the prefrontal airmass today. There
is the potential for scattered showers and a few thunderstorms ahead
of the strong cold front this afternoon into this evening. Locally
higher winds/waves/seas will accompany the stronger convective cores
ahead of the front and may require SMWs this afternoon and evening.
00z guidance suite has trended toward a slightly faster frontal
approach/passage tonight. Model forecast soundings show impressive
CAA behind the front tonight along with substantial pressure rises
of 6-8mb/6hrs. Winds quickly increase to 25-30 kt with gusts 30-35
kt for the Bay and coastal waters behind the boundary. In
coordination with neighboring offices, have opted to hoist a Gale
Warning for the Ches Bay and coastal waters north of the VA/NC
border starting at 05z Thursday morning, lasting until 17z Thursday
afternoon. SCAs go into effect for the rivers, Currituck Sound, and
southern coastal waters overnight as well. Guidance suggests a
prolonged period of SCA-level winds will last into Friday with
multiple surges of colder/drier air behind the initial front. Waves
quickly build to 3-5 ft in the Bay by sunrise Thursday and stay in
the range through Friday afternoon. Offshore winds will keep seas
somewhat suppressed given the forecast wind magnitude but will show
seas generally in the 3-6 ft range through late Friday afternoon.
Thereafter, surface high pressure builds into the region with much
improved marine conditions expected for the weekend.
