builds into the area through Wednesday, before settling across the
southeastern states Thursday. Another cold front crosses the area

As of 315 PM EST Sunday...
Latest MSAS shows high pres ovr NC with a weak frontal bndry along
the coast ivof the Gulf Stream. Meanwhile, a series of cold fronts
remain west of the mts. Models agree that this eve remains fairly
dry with any shwr activity assctd with the coastal trof stays
offshore ivof the Gulf Stream and any shwr activity moving east with
the advancing front weakens as it crosses the mts. Thus, will follow
this scenario with mainly cldy skies but dry thru midnite.
After 06Z is when the pcpn assctd with the (first) cold front
apprchs from the nw with some of the data suggesting the pcpn
initially dissipates east of the mts thru abt 09Z before the column
becomes moist enuf for any pcpn to reach the ground. Thus, will
carry a few hrs period of chc PoPs across the area btwn 06Z-09Z with
PoPs increase to high chc/low end likely aftr 09Z across the
Piedmont. QPF thru 12Z a few hundredths at best. Otw, cldy with lows
lwr 40s nw to lwr 50s se.
A secondary (stronger) cold front crosses the area Mon. This feature
will act to enhance the pcpn coverage across the sern half of the
area thru abt 18Z Mon before pushing offshore late in the aftrn.
Thus, will carry likely PoPs across the se Mon before tapering off
to chc late. Meanwhile, pcpn ends across the nw Mon aftrn with some
partial sun possible. QPF Mon under .10 west to btwn .10 to .20 se.
Temps start out in the 50s to near 60 se, but fall into the 40s w
late as the CAA kicks in behind the fropa.

Clear/cold Mon nite. Enuf mixing to keep 5-10 mph wind inland and 10-
20 mph at the coast. Lows mid 20s w to mid 30s se. Despite plenty of
sun, Tues looks blustery (NW 10-20 mph west of the bay, 20-30 mph
along the coast). Highs in the mid 40s with wind chills in the 30s.
Clear/cold Tues nite with diminishing winds. Lows in the 20s away
from the water (upr teens at LKU), 30-35 along the se coast. Any
freeze headline along the se coast will depend on how fast the winds
diminish.
Mstly sunny/chilly Wed but with much less wind. Highs 45-50.

Models are now a bit quicker (Fri morning) with the next cold
frontal passage. They show a narrow band of moisture with it as it
crosses the area Fri morn. Data also shows that any moisture east of
the mts remains in liquid form despite lows Thurs nite in the mid-
upr 30s across the nw. Will carry low chc PoPs with this fropa for
now. Any rain/snow shwr mix remains ovr the mts. Shwrs Fri morning
linger into aftrn along the coast. Clearing west Fri aftrn. Highs
Fri upr 40s north-mid 50s se. Lows Fri nite mid 20s nw-lwr 30s se.
Another cool/dry airmass expected over the region for next weekend.
GFS does show a weak s/w diving se across the mts next Sun, but will

offshore. Expect MVFR CIGS/VSBYS with the shwrs as they move
across the area Mon. Decreasing clouds Mon aftrn across the
Piedmont as high pres dry out the column. WSW winds blo 10 kts
shift to the NW and become gusty (15-25 kts) Mon aftrn.
Outlook...
Gusty NNW winds (highest along the coast) continue Mon nite and
Tue before diminishing. VFR conditions return thru mid week. Addntl
shwrs are psbl Fri morning with the next cold frontal passage.

As of 315 PM EST Sunday...
Afternoon surface analysis shows a remnant ridge of high pressure
over the SE CONUS with deep low pressure centered near Hudson Bay. A
strong cold front extends southward across the Midwest into Arkansas
and eastern Texas. Winds are light from the east and southeast
across the marine area this afternoon. Waves are near 1 foot in the
Ches Bay with seas 2-3 ft offshore.
SE winds become S and eventually W-SW tonight while increasing to 10-
15 kt by daybreak tomorrow. The aforementioned cold front will cross
the area late morning into the afternoon with winds becoming NW and
increasing to 15-20 kt behind the boundary. Winds are forecast to
continue to strengthen Monday evening with 20-25 kt in the bay,
rivers, and Currituck Sound and 25-30 kt with gusts to 35kt
offshore. The 12z model guidance has backed off somewhat regarding
secondary low development (well) offshore but continues to show the
highest potential for Gale conditions from Cape Charles Light
southward, so have upgraded the Gale Watch to a Gale Warning for the
mouth of the Ches Bay and adjacent/southward coastal waters. North
of these areas, model consensus has actually trended downward a bit
with the potential for Gales but some of the hi-res guidance
continues to show at least marginal Gale conditions for the northern
coastal waters. Thus, will leave the current Gale Watch in place and
let the overnight shift give it one more look before deciding to
issue SCA or Gale Warning headlines. Waves quickly build to 3-5 ft
Monday night and maintain 3-4 ft through Tuesday before falling to 2-
3 ft by Wednesday morning. Seas increase Monday afternoon/evening
with 4-6 ft N and 5-8 ft S through Tuesday evening. NW winds will
diminish somewhat on Tuesday but should remain 20-25 kt with gusts
to 30 kt into the aftn or early evening. Winds are forecast to drop
to 15-20 kt Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Seas will take some
time to fall below 5 ft, especially across the southern coastal
waters where SCA seas could linger into Wednesday evening.
High pressure builds in for Wednesday and Thursday. Then the next
cold front (which has continued to trend a bit stronger in the 12z
model runs) potentially impacts the region Friday into the upcoming
weekend.
