AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Wakefield VA
205 AM EDT Sat Nov 6 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain north and west of the region through
the weekend. Low pressure will lift slowly east northeast off
the southeast coast late tonight into Monday, before moving out
to sea Monday night through Tuesday. High pressure builds back
into and over the region next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 1005 PM EDT Friday...

This evening, sfc high pressure was centered over central NY,
while sfc low pressure was over the wrn coast of FL. The center
of the high will drift ENE into extreme SE NY by Sat morning, as
the low lifts NE to off the GA coast. Dry and cool weather
tonight with clouds mainly in the SE half of the FA this
evening, gradually spreading NNW, especially late tonight into
Sat morning. Lows will range from the upper 20s to around 30F
over the NNW, to the lower to mid 40s over SE VA and NE NC. Have
maintained a Frost Advisory for the Lower MD ern shore
counties, except for the MD beaches, due to lows in the lower to
mid 30s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 400 PM EDT Friday...

From late Sat morning through Sun night, intensifying low
pressure lifting slowly NE off the SE coast, will impact much of
SE and ern portions of the region. Highest chances for rain,
strong winds, and coastal flooding will be across SE VA and NE
NC, with lesser chances for rain and wind the farther N and W
over the CWA.

Rain will move into the area from the SSE beginning Sat aftn
into early Sat evening. Heavy rain will be possible across
extrm SE VA and NE NC, with heaviest rain moving into these
area from Sat night into Sun aftn. Rain totals may be 1 to 2
inches with locally up to 3 inches near the Albemarle Sound and
Currituck Sound. NE or N winds will be increasing Sat aftn and
Sat night, with the highest winds late Sat night into Sun night.
The chance for rain will end over the SE coast late Sun night,
with dry weather and gradually calmer winds along the coast
expected for Mon, as the low pressure area drifts a little
farther off the SE coast.

Highs will be in the mid 50s to lower 60s Sat and Sun, and in
the lower to mid 60s Mon. Lows Sat night will range from the
upper 30s extrm NW, to the mid 50s extrm SE. Lows Sun night will
mainly range from the upper 30s WNW, to the mid to upper 40s
extrm ESE.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 200 AM EDT Saturday...

Dry and warmer conditions for most of next week. Sfc high
pressure will build south into the area on the back side of the
coastal storm. No rain is expected with a warming trend. Highs
will be in the upper 60s to around 70 with lows mainly in the
40s (few upper 30s in the Piedmont and around 50 at the coast).
An upper-level trough will drop south out of central Canada
into the Upper Midwest mid-week and deepen across the center of
the country down to the northern Gulf Coast. Low pressure will
likely develop over the Great Lakes with a cold front extending
south into the Gulf of Mexico. As the trough moves east, the sfc
low pressure will track north of the area, near the US/Canada
border. Cold front will approach the Mid-Atlantic by the end of
the week, bring a chance of rain.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 200 AM EDT Saturday...

VFR conditions will prevail at all the TAF sites through tonight.
Low pressure slowly lifting NE over Florida and off the SE
coast through the day Saturday. High clouds have already spread
north into southern Maryland ahead of the sfc low pressure.
As the sfc low tracks up the coast, low clouds will increase
from the southeast and will bring MVFR CIGs and a chance of
rain to ECG/ORF and possibly PHF from Sat afternoon through Sun.
CIGs will drop to MVFR (2500-3000 ft) at ECG by late Sat
morning and at ORF/PHF by early Sat afternoon. Expecting mainly
VFR CIGs with little to no chance for rain at RIC and SBY
through this period. Winds are generally N/NNE ~5 kt tonight at
RIC/PHF/SBY, and N ~15 kt with gusts around 25 kt at ORF/ECG.
Gusty NNE winds continue at ECG/ORF through the weekend with
sustained winds 15-20 kt and gusts to 25-30 kt. Winds 10-15 kt
with gusts to 25 kt at PHF and around 10 kt with gusts to 15 kt
at RIC/SBY. MVFR/IFR CIGs to continue through Sun for
PHF/ORF/ECG. VFR conditions and dry wx returns for all sites Mon
and Tue.

&&

.MARINE...
As of 400 PM EDT Friday...

Afternoon wx analysis shows deepening low pressure off the west
coast of FL, with ~1030mb high pressure centered from the OH Valley
to the Northeast CONUS. The pressure gradient between these features
is resulting in a N-NE wind of 15-20kt (speeds were 20-25kt just a
couple of hours ago). Seas are 5-6ft N/6-8ft S (running about 1ft
higher than NWPS south of Cape Henry). Waves on the bay are likely 2-
4ft. The high tries to build in to the area this evening-early
tonight, allowing winds to temporarily decrease to just below SCA
criteria across the mid/upper bay. Winds should decrease to 10-15kt
across the upper rivers by tonight, and will allow the SCA to
continue there until 7 PM (will not issue new headlines for the
upper rivers through this weekend attm to avoid a double headline).
Elsewhere, will extend all marine wind headlines through Sunday
night. Gale Watches remain in effect for the VA/NC coastal waters,
Lower Ches Bay, and Currituck Sound. Have added the Lower James
River to a Gale Watch as well.

The strong coastal low will be the main forecast concern this
weekend. It is still progged to track ENE through FL tonight, then
NE off the Southeast and Carolina coasts (along the edge of the Gulf
Stream) as it deepens this weekend. This low will finally move well
offshore of the NC coast by late Monday. Winds will become more
northeasterly and are progged to increase to 20-25kt by mid-late Sat
AM (highest wind speeds south). Some gale gusts are possible south
of Cape Henry by Sat aftn, so have started the Gale Watch at 18z Sat
for the srn two coastal zones and the Currituck Sound. The highest
winds are expected to occur late Saturday night through the first
part of Sunday night as the coastal low makes its closest approach.
Expect sustained winds of ~30kt (w/ gusts to 40kt) on the Lower bay
and coastal waters south of Chincoteague, with 30-35kt sustained
winds (gusts to 45kt) on Sunday/Sunday evening S of Cape Henry.
Local wind probabilities even show a 15-25% chc of 48kt gusts across
the far srn coastal waters late Sunday and the first part of Sunday
night. Dangerous seas of 10-15ft south and 6-10ft north are expected
by Sun. Have hoisted a High Surf Advisory for the nrn OBX and VA
Beach from Sat-Sun night. Beach/dune erosion will be a concern as
well, especially across the nrn OBX and VA Beach.

Wind/wind gusts will slowly diminish early next week, but will
likely remain above SCA criteria through Monday. Seas will be even
slower to diminish, and will likely remain elevated through mid
week.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 400 PM EDT Friday...

The combination of king tides and a strong coastal low pressure
system will cause moderate to strong N-NE winds through the weekend.
This will result in minor tidal flooding across much of the Lower
Bay, tidal York/James Rivers, and Atlantic coast of the VA Ern Shore
on Saturday, where Coastal Flood Advisories are in effect. Localized
moderate flooding is possible during Saturday morning's high tide at
Kiptopeke/Oyster, and will continue to monitor trends and may
eventually need a Coastal Flood Warning. Went with a Coastal Flood
Warning for VA Beach/Duck for Saturday morning's high tide, where
moderate tidal flooding (1-2ft of inundation AGL in vulnerable
areas) is expected, with near major tidal flooding possible at Duck.
Cannot rule out nuisance flooding at Lewisetta/Windmill Pt Saturday
morning.

Water levels will build a bit more by Sunday, and will likely peak
during Sunday's high tide. Major tidal flooding is expected along
the Atlantic coast of ern Currituck County, with minor to moderate
flooding in the Lower Bay, tidal rivers, and Atlantic coast of the
VA Ern Shore. Advisories/Warnings that are currently in effect will
need to be extended, and warnings may be need to be issued for some
areas adjacent to the Lower Ches Bay/Atlantic coast of the VA Ern
Shore for the high tide on Sunday. Tidal flooding issues will likely
continue through Monday before water levels fall more by Tue/Wed. No
worse than minor tidal flooding is expected from Lewisetta-Bishop's
Head-Ocean City through the duration of the event.
