have ended. Spotter reports indicate that in excess of 8 inches of

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS
EVENING TO 6 PM AKST SUNDAY...

* WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 8 
  inches.

* WHERE...Dixon Entrance to Cape Decision Coastal Area.

* WHEN...From 6 PM this evening to 6 PM AKST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The wave responsible for the organized 
  snow bands during the overnight hours Friday is departing the 
  area. Another wave will bring more organized bands of snow 
  showers to the area beginning Saturday evening and continuing 
  through much of Sunday. Snow showers will lead to highly 
  variable snowfall accumulations.

.SHORT TERM.../Friday night through Saturday night/...Rain
showers and snow showers were scattered throughout the panhandle
today. And in between those showers were breaks in the clouds with
a little bit of sunshine breaking through. As the cold air
invaded the panhandle today, temperatures have been steady or
falling throughout the day. This would mean, going forward, that
any leftover rain showers out there would transition to snow
showers for tonight.

Snowfall amounts tonight look pretty spotty due to the showery
nature, but amounts up to 1 to 3 inches are possible for the areas
that get hit with more showers. Overnight lows will be in the 20s
to low 30s.

Saturday will bring a change in the weather pattern. An area of
low pressure will slide southeast through the eastern gulf. This
would mean a drying pattern for areas north of Icy Strait with
breaks in the clouds beginning late in the morning. The southern
panhandle would still be on the front side of the low, with the
possibility of a secondary low moving up from the south. This
combination would increase the chances for precipitation mainly
south of Sumner Strait.

And with temperatures cold enough throughout the atmosphere, snow
is mostly expected through Saturday night for the south.
Accumulating snowfall is looking possible.

For the north, temperatures are expected to get very cold
Saturday night. Single digits to teens are in the forecast for
northern Lynn Canal. Teens to 20s are likely for folks near Icy
Strait.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Wednesday as of 3pm
Friday/...Expect snow showers to end in the south, much colder
temperatures, and outflow winds to begin in the mid-range.

Snow showers will remain through Sunday morning, resulting in
variable amounts across the southern panhandle. A winter storm
watch has been issued for Ketchikan, Metlakatla and surrounding
areas for up to 6 inches from late Saturday evening to late sunday
evening. Then a break in the clouds and clear skies are likely at
the start of the week for the entire panhandle.

Strong pressure gradients will result in outflow winds, with the
strongest gusts expected in the Northern Lynn region starting late
Saturday. Gusty conditions may lead to gale warnings and heavy
freezing spray in the inner channels this weekend and into next
week. Models are continuing to lean towards drying out the
panhandle from north to south through most of the mid-range
forecast. Widespread dry conditions are expected by late Sunday
and will stick around through Tuesday. Models show precipitation
for Wednesday, but confidence on timing of this system is below
average.

Temperatures will consistent decrease through the weekend and
into the start of next week. Gusty conditions from the outflow
event will help to keep some locations in the Northern Lynn warmer
than model guidance, but high temperatures may remain below
freezing through the mid-range and hit single digits across the
north.

Focused changes were made to the start of the mid-range forecast
today to capture the winter storm watch snowfall amounts in the
southern panhandle. Marine winds were trended up about 5 knots
across the panhandle and wave heights were increased in the
Northern Lynn as well. Downtown Juneau and Douglas winds were
increased to near 25 mph to represent the outflow event.
