Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Cold and dry conditions persist over the forecast
area today. Winds have weakened over the northern panhandle
however still remain rather blustery through Stephens Passage and
Lynn Canal into Skagway. The mountain wave winds over downtown
Juneau have also weakened but occasional gusts up to around 40
are still being measured. Should continue to see gradual decreases
in these winds as the pressure gradient begins to relent some
during the forecast period. A front will begin to move in on the
region Saturday night into Sunday. Cloud cover should begin to
increase over the southern half of the panhandle overnight and
begin to migrate slowly north. Locations through about the Icy
Strait corridor and north look good to get one more decent day of
sun before Low pressure begins to arrive from the west. These
features look like they will bring showers to the south as early
as Sunday afternoon, however timing of when any precipitate may be
able to actually overcome the dry air that is in place is highly
questionable. Couple that with the fact that many individual
locations will likely be or become warm enough to allow p-type to
swing between snow and rain and certainty for snow total amounts
becomes very low. However, QPF amounts look very small so not
anticipating it should add up to much during the forecast period.
Monday night as we near the end of the period chances for precip
increase across the panhandle.

Should see decent consistency of the max/min temps with some
moderation possible the next couple of days with a more
noticeable warmup for at least the south beginning Monday as flow
turns more onshore.

.LONG TERM.../Mon through Sat as of 10 pm Fri/ The long range
forecast is distinctly different from what is currently occurring
across the panhandle. We will be losing the blocking cold ridge
that was bringing the dry, cold, and clear weather in favor of
more SW flow aloft beginning to push warmer and moister air into
the area along with a few weak storm systems.

Mon into Mon night features the first of these systems that will
bring some light precipitation to the southern half of the
panhandle. Current guidance has trended drier for the northern
half of the panhandle with the still present but weakened
northerly outflow still supplying some drier and colder
continental air to the region. Yakutat in particular showed a
distinct drying trend with the probability of precip reduced by
about 20 to 40 percent during this period in the current forecast.
The forecast also trended colder with snow lingering as a ptype
into Tue at least for many areas. Southern panhandle could
possibly get a few inches of snow initially before temps finally
warm enough Tue afternoon for at least a mix with rain.

Tue features a stronger (but still rather weak) front coming in
from the Gulf that will finally shut off the outflow. Low level
flow will switch to a southerly Tue into Wed as what is left of
the Canadian high gets pushed east. the result is warmer temps
moving into the area (Highs on Wed could reach above freezing even
up to Haines and Skagway). Precipitation will be present but is
expected to be rather light. Still, areas that stay cold enough
for snow (Juneau, Haines, Skagway, and Gustavus) could end up with
a few more inches of snow Tue night into Wed.

The rest of the extended is somewhat uncertain as the track and
strength of incoming storms is rather spread out between various
models (The GFS keeps wanting a 965 mb low to approach the
panhandle on Thu but there is no support from any other guidance
for that right now). The overall trend is toward a more active
pattern with more systems coming in from the gulf, but the north
might trend colder as the general storm tracks have most systems
aiming more at the southern panhandle allowing more northerly flow
to set up again across the north.
