.SHORT TERM...While our dry, frigid polar air mass has moderated
somewhat, especially aloft as inevitable consistent subsidence
under the broad ridge has warmed temperatures aloft significantly.
With an approaching front to the south, and decreasing stability,
more mixing today led to continued warming high temperatures well
into the 20s with some sites reaching the balmy lower 30s. One
spot that has potentially seen some of the most pre-frontal
instability has been Revillagigedo, Annette, and Prince of Wales
Islands. Rotors and wind shear reported on the west side of
Prince of Wales island with gusty conditions up to 45 mph reported
in easterly flow in Ketchikan and Metlakatla. A lot of this has
been mixing from the nearby mountains, so we did not feel
compelled to add small craft winds through Clarence Strait where
we have east winds of 20 kt tonight.

While we expect inversions to continue settling back in tonight,
we have significantly warmed temperatures to account for some
breezes persisting. The result will be smaller diurnal ranges than
what we have seen as well as improving wind chills. The only
dangerous wind chill that remains is White Pass where wind chills
of 30 to 40 below persist through Friday morning.

Beyond this, we bumped up winds in the gulf on Friday due to the
approaching front from the south, and continued the north wind
small craft in the northern Inner Channels through Friday night.
Likewise, winds in Skagway and Downtown Juneau were strengthened
at least through late Friday. By Saturday we do expect easing of
winds while temperatures remain subfreezing. This should set us
for snow chances increasing in the southern Panhandle for late
this weekend and into the northern Panhandle for Monday. Freezing
spray remains persistent, but the heavy freezing spray has been
eliminated for now as temperatures were warmed and winds are not
quite as strong.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through Wednesday...as of 10 PM
Wednesday/...The models are not in too terribly good agreement
about the location, timing, and strength of the meteorological
features moving into southeast Alaska for the long-term.
Therefore, overall forecast confidence is below average for the
period. I primarily went with a 50/50 combination of the GFS and
ECMWF that were available at the time of forecasting. It looked
like that combination gave a good average output of the model
guidance that we had to work with.

Through the period, the strong area of high pressure that has been
producing the tight pressure gradient will weaken drastically.
Therefore, the outflow winds that we have been experiencing in the
northeastern half of the Panhandle recently will gradually
subside within the first half of the long-term bringing an end to
the dangerously cold wind chills. Temperatures will gradually
warm throughout the latter half of the long-term forecast period
as flow shifts from the northeast to southerly bringing warm air
advection into southeast Alaska as the models show a series of
lows that look to approach the area after the aforementioned
strong high weakens. This looks to bring precipitation amounts on
the lighter side toward the latter 2/3 of the long-term forecast
period.
