Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...A flat ridge over the western Gulf of Alaska can be
seen with satellite imagery in the form of clouds streaming over
the top of it. The ridge will slowly shift eastward through
Wednesday night, effectively decreasing showers from NW to SE
overnight. Breaks in the clouds overnight will cause some patchy
fog and for most places to fall below freezing.

Thursday morning a new low center will be forming over the PWS area
and the gulf ridge will be even more positively tilted with zonal
flow over the gulf. This will help to increase moisture from the
west and the developing low will increase the shower threat across
the north through mid-day Thursday. The south will have a longer
break, meaning a fairly nice first half of Thursday. Then another
moisture stream in line with the jet looks to move across the gulf
and add to the precip rates. This new moisture stream quickly
becomes directed at the southern half of the panhandle Thursday
night, and remain there through Friday. It is a warmer airmass, so
expecting primarily rain across the south. Some mixing is
possible for the north during the overnight hours, but the SW flow
should even warm the north to the 40 degree mark on Friday along
with snow levels rising above 1000ft in Haines in the afternoon,
then cooling back off again Friday night. Snowfall accumulations
through the next 48hrs should be an inch or less for each 12hr
time period.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through Wednesday as of 10PM Tuesday/...A
series of frontal systems will move into southeast Alaska through
the end of the long term forecast period. This brings the
possibility for increased chances for appreciable precipitation
amounts to parts of the region.

The main story for the long term is about the system moving into
Southeast Alaska just in time for the first half of the weekend.
Looks like it will be aimed farther south and be a bit weaker
than it looked yesterday, bringing the heaviest precipitation to
primarily the southern Panhandle. This heavy rain event is looking
shorter lived and a bit less intense than it did last night. The
long fetch of deep central Pacific moisture looks to be less
impressive according to model Integrated Water Vapor
Transport(IVT) values that are around 400 kg/(ms) that look to be
approaching the southern Panhandle with the frontal system
approaching the area around that timeframe. 1000-500mb model
thickness values look to remain around 1300 or higher for the
southern 3/4 of the Panhandle during the timeframe of heaviest
precipitation, keeping those areas primarily heavy rain. This
could bring a mini short lived atmospheric river setup to the
southern Panhandle for the Friday evening through Saturday
timeframe as the frontal system has a good moisture supply to work
with.

The winds were increased along with the increased gradient with
the approaching Saturday front. This brought in some small craft
strength winds over the Gulf. This was done in addition to the
small crafts that were added last night for the Lynn Canal and
Clarence Strait areas.

A ridge moves in over the Gulf for the Sunday through Monday
timeframe, bringing in a brief break with onshore flow, decreased
cloudiness, and more showery activity over southeast Alaska. The
ridge then tilts eastward and moves away from the area toward the
end of the forecast period.

All of the operational models have been in pretty good agreement.
The Canadian has come back in line. Therefore, we included it in
our blend. We phased over to WPC toward the Tuesday into
Wednesday timeframe as confidence in the model agreement on
positioning and strength of the next frontal system decreased.
That system looks like it may bring ample precipitation of several
types to the Panhandle as thicknesses look like they may be low
enough for snow across much of the Panhandle, but these details
are still up in the air on this feature as it is still so far out
in time.
