.SHORT TERM.../through Tuesday night/A break from this persistent
pattern of strong onshore flow and wet weather arrives later this
week. But first, there is an atmospheric river expected to bring
moderate precipitation and strong winds to the panhandle Monday
into Monday night. While the center of low pressure will pass
along the southwest panhandle of Alaska, the associated front
will arrive in Yakutat Monday morning while the rest of the
panhandle should see the wind and rain arrive by the afternoon.
The rain is expected to be heavy at times and wind gusts of up to
70 mph are not out of the question for some areas.

Sunday night, overnight temperatures will only dip a few degrees
compared to Sunday afternoon temps, so expect lows mostly in the
30s to lower 40s. Monday's afternoon temps will be similar to
today's temps, so mostly upper 30s to 40s. And the chance for
precip goes down for the entire panhandle tonight so many areas
could see a break from the rain tonight before it returns tomorrow
with the arrival of the front.

A High Wind Warning will be into effect tomorrow for Yakutat,
Sitka, and Juneau. Winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
to 70 mph are possible. Small craft advisories for the inner
channels and Gales along the coastal waters and off-shore. The
strongest winds will occur on Monday afternoon.

In addition to the High Wind Warning, there will also be a Winter
Storm Warning for the Klondike Highway mainly about 1500 feet
including White Pass. Snow accumulations of up to 20 inches and
winds gusting as high as 55 mph.

Monday night into Tuesday, the front will push through the
panhandle. This would bring decreasing chances for rain and snow
in the panhandle as well as calming winds

.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Sunday as of 10 pm Saturday/ A
pattern change through the extended range is still in the works
as a SW flow pattern aloft slowly changes to a more ridge like
pattern as we get into late week. The main change today in that
picture is that guidance is much more aggressive in moving the
ridge east once it develops, and replacing it with a deep trough
by next weekend. Overall confidence in this pattern shift is
rather good though the confidence on the timing of the incoming
trough for next weekend is rather low.

At the surface, the forecast is noticeably less active than it
has been over the last week or two. At the very least there are
two systems that will be passing through the area, both will be
rather weak by the time they make it to the panhandle as they
have been fighting against the upper ridge as they cross the gulf.
Still they will have enough strength to bring some rain to the
panhandle as they move through (first one is Tue night into Wed
and the last is Fri into Sat). Most of this precip will likely be
in the form of rain with some snow possible for the north.
Temperatures will be on a gradual cooling trend, but no
significant cool downs are apparent until the late weekend at
least in the wake of the weekend trough (the late week cool air that
was suggested in previous forecasts has become much less certain
today). At that point northerly flow on the back side of the
trough appears to bring down a cold air mass from the arctic,
though how strong it will be varies. We will see if later guidance
keeps this feature going, but ensemble guidance lends some
support with about 2 standard deviation below normal for Temps
suggested at that time.
