.SHORT TERM.../Wednesday Night through Friday Night/...Active
weather continues for the panhandle in the short term. The
southern zones have experienced high winds today an the High Wind
Warnings look on track into the evening. The Winter Storm
Warnings for the Haines vicinity and for the Klondike Highway
continue to be on track and the times were extended. Observations
indicated that snow amounts were nearing a foot around Haines and
up to 6 inches on the Klondike. A lull in the snowfall is expected
for these areas later this evening, but the snowfall rates will
pick back up later tonight. Heavy rain also fell today (2+ inches) across
the southern panhandle and a Flood Advisory was issued for the
Ward Lake area near Ketchikan.

The next wave of low pressure currently over the North Pacific
will move NE towards the panhandle through tonight and into
tomorrow. This will bring more precipitation to the panhandle and
some wind, but less magnitude than today's wind. Thickness values
and 850mb temperatures indicate that precipitation will mostly
fall as rain, with the exception of Northern Lynn Canal which
should remain snow most of Thanksgiving Day. Tomorrow night gets
tricky as cold air advection takes over and rain changes back over
to snow. With onshore flow and the possibility of training snow
showers, Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for Yakutat
and Juneau starting Thursday night. There is low confidence in
accumulation amounts since relatively warm surface temperatures
will have to cool to support accumulation. It is expected that snow
amounts will vary considerably from location to location given the
showery nature of the precipitation and the fact that
temperatures are so borderline. The snow forecast for Juneau and
Yakutat will be monitored. The rest of the Icy Strait corridor
will also need to be monitored just in case temperatures end up a
little cooler than the current forecast.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through Monday/ Weakening low over Prince
William Sound keeps some shower activity over the NE Gulf coast
through early Saturday. Next gale force low moves up from the N
pacific towards the SE AK gulf. Track and timing of this low still
uncertain with GFS slow but stronger and more northerly compared
to ECMWF/Canadian/NAM. Expect moderate rainfall for the southern
panhandle with accumulating snow near Hyder. For now have 4 to 6
inches of snow there before a warm up transitions to rain.
Morning ensemble runs keeping majority of impacts (higher winds,
heavy precip, accumulating snow) more to the south of the
panhandle. If the low has a more southerly track the northern
areas will experience a short period of drier weather with
increase northerly flow and cold air. However can not discount the
low reaching the central panhandle which, due to the cold air,
will produce more snow. As this system moves inland, high
pressure will build over the eastern AK Gulf with a weak residual
low once again over Prince William Sound. This brings in more
showers overland wit the onshore flow Sunday then diminish as the
next low moves in to the Western Gulf Sunday night into Monday and
flow, temporarily shifts offshore. With cold air in place for the
central and northern areas with the large amount of moisture
moving in from this early week system could set up a good over
running event with yet more heavy snow changing to rain. Used a
GFS/ECMWF blend early in the period. Forecast confidence is low.
