A warning means that hard freeze is already occurring or 
imminent.

A hard freeze in southeast Alaska is defined as freezing
temperatures lasting six hours or longer, or temperatures falling
to 28 degrees.

.SHORT TERM.../Through Sunday night/ A drying trend begins today
as a surface ridge over the gulf pushes east toward the Panhandle.
Numerous showers and low clouds are still ongoing early this
morning across the far Southern Panhandle; however current
satellite imagery shows a sharp back edge rapidly moving eastward.
As drier air moves in and clouds begin to break up, expect patchy
fog to develop in a few spots mainly before 10 AM. Winds will
diminish through the morning hours as the pressure gradient falls
apart. Light sea breezes may development during the afternoon
hours, especially in areas that receive more breaks in the
clouds.

The next forecast challenge will be the fog and frost potential
tonight. With clearing skies, light winds, and a moist boundary
layer from recent rainfall, expect fog to develop in many areas
tonight through Sunday morning. Will have to watch for the
possibility of dense fog in the usual fog prone areas like
Petersburg, Klawock, Hoonah, and Yakutat. Currently just have
Patchy Fog wording in the forecast; however the threat for dense
fog will be monitored closely tonight. Another concern with high
pressure directly overhead tonight will be the potential for frost
across portions of the northern Panhandle. Highest confidence in
frost development is along the Haines and Klondike Highways as low
temps fall into the 30s. Low temps near or just above freezing
possible along the Icy Strait Corridor and NE gulf coast as well;
however confidence is higher for fog rather than frost there.

Dry weather continues into Sunday as high pressure remains over
the Panhandle; however rain chances increase from south to north
beginning late Sunday evening. A front in the gulf begins to push
northward through the eastern gulf Sunday afternoon and evening
increasing the easterly pressure gradient across the area. Winds
increase in E-W channels and the Southern Inner Channels Sunday
evening then continue to increase to small craft conditions late
Sunday night. Expect winds in the northern Panhandle to flip
around the north late Sunday night ahead of the front lifting
north.

Confidence is average for the short term with the biggest
forecast challenge being fog development Saturday night into
Sunday morning.

.LONG TERM.../Monday through Saturday as of 10 pm Friday/ A
persistent wet forecast is in store for the long range forecast
as we stay in the soggy, but predictable series of low pressure
systems impacting the region with short breaks in between. That
being said, as we open the period, a front will be moving across
the region. Greatest impacts will be in the southern panhandle
where some locations could see an inch or two of total rain from
this event through Monday night. A strengthening pressure gradient
also could push some gusty winds into the ocean entrances of
Chatham and Clarence Straits. After the main front passes, precip
becomes more showery in nature due to onshore flow, but PoPs
decrease Tuesday night into Wednesday. For some areas, there may
even be a chance for some of the clouds to break out during the
day but don't get too used to it, because another low is on the
way. As has been the case the past several nights, models are
still having trouble coming to any sort of reasonable consensus on
the track and intensity of this low. The timing appears to be
coming into better agreement though in that the impacts will be
upon the panhandle by Thursday, perhaps as early as around
sunrise, but beginning to look more likely to be a bit later in
the day. Still have plenty of time to evaluate the possibilities
and see if guidance can achieve unanimity so for now still a bit
soon to speculate further. Beyond this, the disagreement continues
so have maintained some PoP to account for potential showery
activity if flow does turn back onshore before the next low
arrives late in the forecast period on Saturday.
