* WHAT...Very cold wind chills expected. Expect wind chills as
  cold as 55 below zero. The cold wind chills will cause 
  frostbite in as little as 10 minutes to exposed skin.

* WHERE...Near passes in the Eastern Alaska Range.

* WHEN...Now to 6 AM Saturday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS... Blowing snow may reduce the visibility at
  times this evening. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and sustained wind
speeds of 15 mph or more will create low wind chills. Frost bite
and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM SUNDAY TO 1 PM
AKDT MONDAY...

* WHAT...Snow and blowing snow expected. Plan on difficult travel
  conditions. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches, are 
  expected. Visibility will be reduced to one half mile or less at
  times in snow and blowing snow.

* WHERE...Upper Koyukuk Valley.

* WHEN...9 AM Sunday to 1 PM Monday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will cause
  areas of blowing and significant drifting of snow along the 
  Dalton Highway.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A very cold airmass continues to dive south into the Interior
today brining the potential for record cold to many locations in
the Interior through Saturday. Light snow continues to diminish
over the the southeastern Interior as the arctic front pushes
south and east into the Yukon. Gusty winds continue this morning
especially near passes in the Alaska and Brooks Ranges and along
the Alaska Highway. Ongoing very low wind chills are expected to
improve this afternoon as winds diminish, however ast winds
diminish and skies clear out tonight we are expecting record
breaking or near record breaking cold temperatures over much of
the Interior into Saturday. Temperatures will begin to rebound on
Sunday as clouds and warmer airmass push into the Interior.

.DISCUSSION...
The 9/00z model suite initialized well against the 00z surface
analysis and verified well against the 06z surface analysis.
Models continue to be in good agreement on the overall pattern
through the weekend and into early next week. Pattern change
begins on Sunday with a return to more seasonal temperatures with
highs in the 30s and 40s and lows in the teens and 20s over the
interior by mid week.

Aloft at 500 hpa, a 499 dam low 400 nm north of Demarcation Point
anchors a very cold longwave trough over Eastern Alaska with a
second 500 dam low located over Fairbanks and third 512 dam low
over the northern Gulf of Alaska. 850 mb temperatures at Fairbanks
have dropped into the 30s below under the cold trough aloft which
would be chilly for January let alone April. The trough will
continue to dig south and east while an upper level ridge builds
over the Eastern Bering Sea and Western Alaska on Saturday. An
upper level low deepens to 513 dam and pushes northeast into the
Central Bering Sea Sunday. The low will push east through the
Bering Sea Saturday night and Sunday. As the low pushes east,
southerly flow will develop over much of the forecast area on
Sunday. Southerly flow looks to persist over much of the forecast
area into at least the early part of next week.

At the surface, a 990 mb low low is currently in place over the
northern Gulf of ALaska 100 nm south of Yakutat, with strong high
pressure over over the Bering Sea with a ridge extending over the
North Slope as well as the Western and Central Interior. A tight
pressure gradient is in place over the Alaska Range, Brooks Range
as well as elsewhere over the southeastern Interior. This is
bringing gusty northerly winds to passes in the Alaska and Brooks
Ranges as well as gusty southeasterly winds to the southeastern
Interior. A high pressure will continue to spread east over the
Central and Eastern Interior today and tonight. We are expecting
record to near record low temperatures over much of the Interior
and North Slope tonight and Saturday as skies clear out and winds
diminish. A front associated with a strong low over Bering Sea
will affect the west coast of Alaska Saturday and Sunday.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Gusty northwesterly winds continue over the Upper Tanana Valley
and through the Alaska Range Passes and continue to bring reduced
visibility in blowing snow and very low wind chill values. Low
temperatures this morning in clear and calm areas have dropped
into the teens and 20s below and a few spots are in the 30s below.
Saturday, with clear skies and light winds there will be much
wider areas of low temperatures in the minus 30s with some spots
pushing minus 40...Spring time in Alaska! Record low temperatures
will be threatened at many locations tonight and Saturday morning.
A warming trend will begin on Sunday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low temperatures in the 20s to 30s below are found on the North
Slope currently In fact, some spots in and near the Brooks Range
have seen temperatures drop below minus 40. Atigun Pass has
dropped to 43 below with winds around 15 mph producing a wind
chill value around 74 below. Along the Beaufort Sea coast wind
chill values hovered in in the minus 50 range overnight. Gusty
southerly gap winds in the Brooks Range will result in wind chill
values as cold as 70 below near passes. The ongoing Wind Chill
Warning continues to verify for areas in the near passes in the
eastern Brooks Range. Conditions are expected to improve as winds
diminish this afternoon. Temperatures are expected to drop into
the the 20s to 30s below again tonight.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Cold temperatures continue to dominate with teens, 20s and a few
30s below found this morning over the Western Interior. The Yukon
Delta will begin to see warmer temperatures today as clouds move
in and snow moves in tonight. Temperates tonight over the rest of
the West Coast and Western Interior will warm as clouds and snow
move into the area ahead of a weather front pushing on shore later
tonight. Winter Storm Watches have been issued for snow and
blowing snow for much of the West Coast and Western Interior from
the Seward Peninsula south. This system has the potential to
bring heavy snowfall to the Yukon Delta and lower Yukon Valley
Saturday night, with snowfall pushing into the western Interior on
Sunday. Blowing snow is also expected along the coast with this
system.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...A pattern change early next
week will bring seasonal temperatures to much of the Central and
Eastern Interior with highs in the 30s and 40s, and lows in the
teens and 20s above.
