Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 425 AM AKST Wed Feb 24 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Another round of snow expected today for the Interior with places such as Tanana receiving 5 to 8 inches through Thursday night. Fairbanks will see lesser amounts of 2 to 4 inches due to downsloping from the Alaska Range. More snow expected for the Interior on Saturday. North slope will remain cold with dangerous wind chills through Thursday afternoon. && .DISCUSSION... The upper level pattern looks to be mostly west to southwest flow for the remainder of the week across northern Alaska. A strong shortwave will move across the West Coast this morning and then across the Interior Thursday morning, before continuing east into Canada by Friday morning. At 850 mb, -25C to -35C remains anchored over the North Slope, while warmer -4C to -12C air remains over the Interior. This warmer airmass will remain in place over the Interior south of the Brooks Range going into the weekend. Slightly warmer temperatures across the North Slope expected going into the weekend, but will still remain in the -20C to -25C range. At the surface, a low in the Bering Sea has sent a front into the West Coast and portions of the Western Interior this afternoon, bringing widespread snow. This front will continue to move east and dissipate this evening, with Fairbanks expected to receive accumulating snow. A second surge of snow is expected behind this front for the West Coast and Western Interior by early tomorrow morning. This front is expected to set up just to the north of Fairbanks, before the surface low moves inland and resulting in more significant snow for Fairbanks by late tomorrow night. Once this front moves east on Thursday, chances for snow across the Interior remain going into Friday. Central and Eastern Interior... Another round of snow expected for today with places such as Tanana receiving 5 to 8 inches through tomorrow night. Fairbanks will see lesser amounts of 2 to 4 inches due to some downsloping from the Alaska Range.
