Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 152 PM AKST Sat Feb 6 2021 SYNOPSIS...Snow will be tapering off in the Interior to flurries overnight, then clearing skies Sunday. Temperatures have moderated a bit with the clouds, and a warm front moving over the Eastern Arctic Coast, but temperatures will start falling Sunday evening and continue to fall into midweek. Wind will increase over the summits north of Fairbanks with Wind Chill to around 50 below and blowing snow reducing visibility making for difficult travel conditions. Generally clear and cold in the Interior and Arctic through the week with some snow midweek on the West Coast. .DISCUSSION... Models...06/12Z solutions are in much better agreement, especially in the midrange. Temperatures will be below climatological normals over Northern Alaska this next week. Precipitation solutions have done a good job with the latest system. We are moving into a drier period in the Central and Eastern Interior so no issues there. The West Coast will get some activity Wednesday and Thursday and the GFS and ECMWF are handling it similarly at this point. Solutions have been consistent in developing winds on the summits north of Fairbanks through midweek. Temperatures coming out of the MOS guidance may be a bit on the cold side considering the 850 hpa temperatures only get down to around 32 below on the Canadian solutions and warmer on the others. Aloft...At 500 hpa...A 498 dam has moved south over the Southern Beaufort Sea with troughing extending southwest over the Upper Yukon Flats this afternoon. The low will continue to move south over the Northwest Territories by Sunday afternoon at 508 dam as the first shortwave exits the area and another shortwave moves over the Arctic Coast. Ridging continues to extend from the Northeast Pacific over Bristol Bay and Chukotka to a 550 dam high 200 nm west of Wrangel Island Sunday afternoon. A 545 dam low over the Chukotsk Peninsula will dissipate over the Chukchi Sea tonight. A trough south of the Western Aleutians will move northeast to lie from Northern Kamchatka over the Northwest and Central Bering Sea and Atka by Sunday afternoon. Monday afternoon troughing will continue over the northeast corner of the state and Eastern Arctic with a 514 dam low over the Yukon Territory. The ridging will also persist extending from the Northeast Pacific over Kodiak Island to the Bering Strait to a 552 dam high 400 nm northwest of Wrangel Island. The trough over the Central Bering Sea will move east as it dissipate over the Eastern Bering Sea Monday. At 850 hpa...-20C isotherm lies from Northway to Oliktok Point. As the upper level low over the Beaufort Sea moves south it will start dumping cold air into the state with the -20C isotherm being pushed southwest to lie from McCarthy to Selawik to Point Lay by Monday morning with some -30C temperatures east of Fort Yukon and a pool of -40s over the Yukon Territory. Surface...Surface low associated with the low aloft over the Beaufort Sea has moved to 150 nm southwest of Banks Island with a warm front extending southwest over the Eastern Arctic Coast. The low will continue south as the front drags southeast tonight. High pressure associated with a 1056 dam high high in the Siberian Arctic extends south to Wrangel Island then east over the Arctic Plain today. A 1027 mb low over the Seward Peninsula continues to weak and will move east along the stationary front that is north of the Alaska Range. A front lies over the Western Aleutians then south into the Pacific. High pressure will build in over the Interior behind the low as the high over the Siberian Arctic moves into the northwest Arctic at 1057 mb, and a 1048 mb high develops over the Arctic Plain. A cold front associated with the low in the Northwest Territories will push south to the Eastern Arctic Coast tonight and into the Eastern Interior during the day Monday. The high over the Arctic will continue to move south to 300 nm north of Utqiagvik by Monday afternoon at 1063 mb. The front in the Bering Sea will move to the Eastern Bering Sea and dissipate with the precipitation remaining offshore. Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Wind chill continues to be and issue and expect it to continue and may go even lower as temperatures fall after the clouds move out tonight. Winds will be diminishing, but with the cold air surging south they will slowly diminishing. Temperatures will warm a bit today/tonight as the warm front moves through the area with cold air settling back in as the cold front moves through the area by late Sunday. Highs and Lows Sunday will be in the single digits below to mid 20s below with lows Monday morning falling into the 30s and 40s below for much of the Arctic. West Coast and Western Interior...Snow will be tapering off through the evening as the low over the Seward Peninsula moves east and dissipates. Skies will clear from west to east overnight with generally light winds across the area. Cold will be pushing southwest into the Western Interior Sunday night and to the West Coast Monday. Coldest temperatures will be in the Inland areas with lows falling into the 20s to 40s below by Tuesday, while along the coast temperatures will fall into the teens to around 20 below by Tuesday. Central and Eastern Interior...Snow tapering to flurries by late afternoon with additional accumulations less than one half inch overnight. Flurries will taper off early Sunday with clearing skies in the afternoon and evening. Wind chill will continue to be a problem on the summits north of Fairbanks through midweek. Blowing snow developing on the summits as winds increase above 1500 feet to around 25 mph at times starting Sunday afternoon. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Generally clear and cold until late in the week. Stratus will impact temperatures if it develops over the Interior. A front will move northwest over the West Coast helping to moderate temperature in the area as it spreads some snow up the coast to the Chukchi Sea.
