.SYNOPSIS FOR ARCTIC COAST...
A strong front extending SW from a 989 mb low near Utqiagvik will
continue to push east tonight and reach the Canadian border on 
Friday. High pressure will build over the Chukchi Sea tonight and 
move east across the North Slope and Beaufort Sea on Friday. A low
developing over the Chukotsk Peninsula will move east across the 
Chukchi Sea Friday night and to the eastern Beaufort Sea by 
Saturday night.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front currently pushing onto the West Coast will
spread rain and snow across the West Coast, Western Interior and
North Slope this morning. This front will bring a mix of rain and
snow to the Central and Eastern Interior this evening. Multiple
inches of snow expected in higher elevations of the Brooks and
Alaska Ranges, while snow will reach as low as 2000 feet for
portions of the Interior tonight and into Friday morning.

.DISCUSSION...

The 26/00 UTC model suite initialized well against the 26/00 UTC
surface analysis and verified well against the 26/06 UTC surface
analysis. The models are in decent agreement on the timing and
strength of synoptic scale features in the short range and into
the weekend, however they continue to struggle with the expected
weather pattern transition early next week. There remains good
agreement on a quick shot of cold air over much of Northern Alaska
Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a cold and sharp trough moving
rapidly east through northern Alaska and then a transition to
more seasonable fall like temperatures with an upper level ridge
building in over the Eastern Bering Sea and Western Alaska on
Saturday and over the Central and Eastern Interior on Sunday and
into early next week.

Central and Eastern Interior... Cloudy conditions will persist
today ahead of more precipitation developing across the area as a
strong front moves in from the west this evening. A strong push of
arctic air will move into the area and will settle into the area
Friday and Saturday. Several inches of snow are expected in the
Alaska Range at pass level, with a dusting of snow in higher
elevations across the Interior above 2000 feet. As the
precipitation exits the Interior Friday evening, clearing skies
will result in temperatures below freezing in the hills and near
freezing in the valleys Friday night. A warming trend expected
beginning on Sunday and lasting into the beginning of next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A strong weather front currently over the western portions of the
North Slope will push east across the North Slope and Brooks
Range beginning today. Primarily rain, with snow mixing in at
times is expected along the Arctic Coast and lower elevations of
the North Slope Plains. Primarily snow expected in the Brooks
Range above 1000 feet, with 2-4 inches through Friday afternoon.
Elevated surf of 1 to 2 feet above the high tide line today and
Friday along the Western and Northern Arctic Coasts as the surface
low moves across the Chukchi Sea bringing northwest winds 15 to
30 mph.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A strong weather front over the West Coast this morning will push
into the Western Interior later this morning. Snow expected above
1000 feet with up to an inch of accumulation, with higher amounts
in the foothills of the Brooks Range north and east of Ambler.
Cooler temperatures will settle into the region as unseasonably
cold Arctic air pushes south going into the weekend. Elevated
surf of 1 to 2 feet above the high tide line expected today and
Friday along the West Coast, mainly north of the Bering Strait due
to northwest winds of 15 to 30 mph.

Coastal Hazard Potential...
A strong surface low pressure moving east across the Chukchi Sea,
continues to bring pre-frontal southwest winds 15 to 30 mph
this morning which will shift to the northwest around 20 to 35
mph beginning later this morning and will continue into Friday.

As a result, Special Weather Statements are in effect for
Elevated Surf of 1 to 2 feet above the normal high tide line is
possible along the Chukchi Sea Coast and Kotzebue Sound Coast from
Point Hope to Shishmaref today and Friday.

Wave action is expected to wash to the top of the beach so
residents should secure items by moving them away from the beach.

A strong cold front will move to the northwest mainland Thursday
spreading a mix of rain and snow to lower elevation and snow to
higher elevations.

Friday with accumulating snow falling above 2000 ft from the
Brooks Range south to the Alaska Range.

The hill tops around Fairbanks including Murphy Dome, Ester Dome,
and Cleary Summit could see a dusting of snow, while the White
and Ray Mountains, Fortymile Country, and the Alaska Range will
get some accumulating snow with up to 4 inches of accumulation.
The snow is expected to melt this weekend.

A mix of rain and snow is expected at lower elevations with no
accumulation.
