A 1001 mb low near Nunivak Island will drift inland and merge with
a low to the E. A 1002 mb low just W of the Gulf of Anadyr will
move S along the Dateline to the Aleutians by Wed morning. A 1022
mb high near the Central Siberian Coast will moves SE to the Gulf
of Anadyr by Tue afternoon with high pressure extending E over the
Arctic Coast. A 991 mb low will move to Wrangel Island Wed with a
strong weather front moving into the area Wed night and Thu.

Low pressure over mainland Alaska will hold in place as a 1018 mb
high near the Gulf of Anadyr with high pressure extending NE over
the Chukchi Sea, and E to the coast, slides S. Low pressure
associated with a 996 mb low in the Arctic will push S over the 
Chukchi Sea Wed and a 998 mb low will develop near the Gulf of 
Anadyr and move into the Northeast Bering Sea Thu as a strong 
front moves over the coast. The front will move inland Thu with
high pressure moving into the Northeast Bering Sea Fri.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A rainy, cool pattern typical of late Summer is expected to
persist over the next few days. Light rain will spread east across
the Interior today and linger on and off again throughout the
week. A strong low will sweep east across the Chukchi Sea Thursday
and deliver strong winds and heavy rainfall to the northwest
coast. Elevated surf is possible with this system.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft 500 mb...
Longwave troughing spans the eastern Bering Sea to much of
Northern Canada and is anchored by a 510dam closed low swirling
about in the northern Beaufort Sea near 80N. A weak ridge over the
eastern Gulf of Alaska is quickly tracking east. A 581dam high
over the Sea of Okhotsk will be gradually beaten down as a parade
of shortwaves emanating from the deepening Arctic low track east
across Siberia and into the Bering Sea. This will allow heights to
gradually fall across western Alaska and the Bering Sea. A
particularly potent shortwave trough will transit the Chukchi Sea
Thursday and impact the northwest coast of Alaska. Deep Arctic
troughing will overtake Northern Alaska going into the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Northeasterly flow supported by low pressure over the northern
Beaufort Sea will facilitate near freezing temperatures across
the region along with light snow in the Brooks Range above 2000
feet. Flow will briefly turn southerly Wednesday as high pressure
races south from the Siberian Arctic to the Bering Sea. This will
be followed by a potent weather front which will sweep east across
the Chukchi Sea Thursday and impact the coast with a mix of snow
and rain, as well as strong west winds. Elevated surf is also
possible. See the "Coastal Hazard Potential" section of the
discussion for more details. Significantly cooler temperatures
will follow frontal passage.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A weather front associated with a 1000 mb low centered just south
of Nunivak Island stretches across Norton Sound and into the
Interior. The low will track slowly southeast and weaken as the
front does likewise. A second front will swing south across the
Chukchi Sea tonight into Tuesday, bringing rain to the immediate
Chukchi coast and a mix of snow and rain to the western Brooks
Range. High pressure will sweep south from the Chukchi Sea to the
eastern Bering Sea on Wednesday, supporting a brief warmup to
near normal temperatures. However, a potent front associated with
a deep Chukchi low will impact much of the West Coast early
Thursday with locally heavy rain and strong west winds. Below
average temperatures are expected following frontal passage,
particularly north of the Bering Strait.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Showers will spread east across the Interior this morning,
becoming a light rain this afternoon. Most areas will see
persistent rainfall through Wednesday with amounts generally 0.50
to 1.00 inches. However, weak downsloping will support lesser
amounts across the upper Tanana Valley from Delta Junction east.
Gusty south winds up to 50 mph are expected through Alaska Range
passes this morning into the afternoon but will gradually decrease
tonight into early Tuesday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
A potent weather front associated with a 986 mb low will impact
the northwest coast north of the Bering Strait early Thursday
with strong west winds. Although relatively brief, this will
support elevated surf and possible minor beach erosion. Details
will become more clear as the event draws nearer.
