Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Showery, cool weather is expected to persist across most of the
state throughout the week. A cold airmass over the North Slope and
Brooks Range will support snow at higher elevations through
Thursday, including along parts of the Dalton Highway. By and
large, temperatures will remain below average for the next few
days.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft 500 mb...
Southwest flow aloft is supported by a 519 dm low north of Point
Barrow and a strong ridge in the Northeast Pacific. Longwave
troughing extends across western Alaska and much of the Bering Sea
to Kamchatka. Over the next few days, the Arctic low will remain
generally stationary, while the Pacific ridge drifts slowly east
as troughing expands east from the Bering Sea.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A 995 mb low positioned roughly 350 nm NNE of Point Barrow is
facilitating northerly flow and cold air advection from the high
Arctic. Cold air damming along the northern Brooks Range will keep
temperatures colder then normal over the next few days. Cold air
will seep into the Brooks Range as well, and likely result in the
first measurable snowfall of the season in the higher elevations
generally above 3000 feet tonight into Thursday. Up to 2 inches of
accumulation is possible along parts of the Dalton highway.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Northerly flow along the immediate coast will support continued
cool, showery weather for the next few days. A stalled weather
front inland will aid this effect. Cold Arctic air will spill
southward over the northwest coast late Wednesday into Thursday as
temperatures fall further to near freezing in some areas north of
the Bering Strait. A weak ridge will build over the eastern Bering
Sea Friday, beginning a slow warming trend to near normal for the
weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A stalled front spanning much of Central and Eastern interior
continues to produce rainfall. As of 12 PM, light rain is falling
generally from Tanana to Chalkyitsik. To the south of this
boundary, modest instability is generating showers, some of which
are heavy. An isolated afternoon thunderstorm is possible,
generally from Minchumina to Fairbanks to Eagle. The front will
continue to gradually weaken and eventually shift southeast
Thursday as the Pacific ridge advances east.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The areas most desperate for rain in the northern Yukon Flats
are unfortunately missing out on the majority of the rainfall
affecting most of the state.. for now. A weather front is expected
to sweep across the area from the west on Wednesday and ideally
deliver decent chances for wetting rain. Otherwise, a very Fall-
like pattern will support showery, cool weather.

.HYDROLOGY...
The past 2 days had 0.50-1.5 inches of rain over the southern
Interior, with the heaviest amounts in a band from Tanana to
Fairbanks to Eagle. The Interior can expect an additional
0.25-0.50 inch of rain today through Thursday with up to 1 inch
in the Alaska Range. Expect rises on most rivers south of the
Yukon River this week, with significant rises Chena, Chatanika,
Charlie and Fortymile Rivers. At this time no flooding is
expected.
