Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 540 AM AKDT Fri Oct 29 2021 .SYNOPSIS... An active weather pattern is expected over the weekend as a system moves in from the south. This system will bring snowfall, heavy at times to the Western Interior and West Coast, with the snowfall eventually mixing with freezing rain or rain across parts of the Western Interior. This system will also bring strong downslope winds to the Alaska Range, with a significant warmup expected for the Interior. Strong downslope winds are also anticipated in the Brooks Range with a warmup expected over the North Slope. A low intensifying in the Chukchi Sea will bring the potential for elevated surf to the Seward Peninsula and the Chukchi Sea Coast late in the weekend into early next week. && .DISCUSSION... The 29/ 00 UTC models generally initialized well when compared to observational data. The models are still struggling with the exact placement of the heaviest with the weather system that will affect the western half of the forecast area this weekend, especially after Saturday night. Aloft, at 500 mb, a 508 dam low is currently over the Southern Chukchi Sea while a 521 dam low is over the north Pacific, just south of the Alaska Peninsula. Southerly flow currently dominates over the eastern half of the forecast area. Going into Saturday, the southerly flow over the eastern half of the forecast area will intensify as a ridge builds north along the AlCan Border. The low in the North Pacific will push north into Bristol Bay on Saturday and will continue north along the coast on Sunday, merging with the low over the southern Chukchi Sea. The system will continue to push north on Monday. Central and Eastern Interior... Freezing fog is expected at times this morning, mainly south of the Yukon River. A strong downslope wind event is shaping up in the Alaska Range for the weekend. Winds will start to pick up tonight and will peak Saturday afternoon, remaining strong into Sunday. Wind gusts as high as 80 mph are anticipated near passes in the Alaska Range Saturday evening. We upgraded the inherited High Wind Watches to High Wind Warnings with the morning package. Delta Junction will see east to southeasterly winds to 60 mph although stronger winds moving blowing through Isabel Pass will make it to just south of Delta. Elsewhere in the Interior, east to southeasterly winds of 15 to 30 mph are possible Saturday evening. Some of the higher elevation locations north of Fairbanks may approach advisory wind levels (Eagle Summit for example). Ahead of the winds a front moving to the north tonight into early Saturday will bring chances for light snow, mainly north of Fairbanks. Areas northeast of Tanana will see better chances of snow on Saturday, with 1 to 3 inches of snow anticipated. Highs today will be in the 20s. Warmer air will push in from the south on Saturday, resulting in a significant warmup. Highs on Saturday will reach into the 40s across the southern Interior, including Fairbanks. For Fairbanks, the record high temperature for Saturday is 45 degrees, while our current forecast high temperature is 42 degrees, so we will be near record territory. North Slope and Brooks Range... Satellite imagery from this morning shows areas of low stratus and fog along the Beaufort Sea Coast. This will persist through the day today. A system moving in from the south will cause winds in the Brooks Range to pick up on Saturday. By Sunday, we expect wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph near passes in the Brooks Range. The southerly flow will also cause a significant warmup in temperatures. While highs today will only be in the teens, highs on Sunday will rise into the upper 20s to lower 30s. The western half of the Brooks Range has the potential to see a significant snowfall late Saturday into Sunday, although the Dalton Highway is not anticipated to see much snowfall with this system. Easterly winds will start to increase on Sunday morning as a surface low moves north along the West Coast. Winds will switch around to the west Sunday night as the surface low pushes north in the Chuckchi Sea bringing Gale Force winds to the coast from Utqiagvik west late Sunday night into early Monday. West Coast and Western Interior... Satellite imagery from this morning shows areas of low stratus and fog along the Yukon River. This will persist through the morning. We will also see some snow showers today over the Seward Peninsula and the Chukchi Sea Coast causing reductions in visibility at times. A weather system moving to the north will bring significant snowfall to parts of the West Coast and Western Interior over the weekend. Snow will begin late tonight in the Upper Kuskokwim and Lower Yukon Valleys and will spread north during the day on Saturday, reaching the Brooks Range by Saturday evening. The precipitation will shift west covering the coast for Saturday night and Sunday. The front will push east again back into the western Interior late Sunday. There will be a decent amount of warm air pushing northward with this system. Going into Saturday evening, snow levels across the Western Interior will rise, resulting in snow mixing with freezing rain or rain. The good news is during this same time the heaviest precipitation will shift westward. The best chances for freezing rain or rain to mix with the snow will be southeast of the Yukon River. Any mixed precipitation will cut into to snow accumulation. The potential for mixed precipitation combined with model differences results in higher than normal uncertainty for our snow amount forecast at the moment. The lower Yukon Valley gets the worst of the snow with up to 10 inches of snow possible. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Elevated water levels are anticipated along the Chukchi Sea Coast as well as the Seward Peninsula Coast Sunday night into Monday. Currently, water levels are expected to be 1 to 3 feet above the normal high tide line; however, there is a lot of uncertainty with this system at the moment. Extended Forecast Days 4-7... On Monday the front that is expected to bring all of the precipitation to the West Coast and Western Interior over the weekend will fizzle out as it pushes into the Central Interior. A strong low in the Chukchi Sea will bring Gale Force winds to the the Chukchi Sea coast on Monday. Another strong low looks to move north through the Bering Sea on Tuesday; however the details are somewhat unclear at the moment. && .AFG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
