Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Active weather continues with snow or flurries over
most of Northern Alaska. Snow will be tapering off through the day
for most areas. A few break tonight and early Friday before the
next system develops over the Southern Interior bringing another
round of snow to areas mainly south and east of the Yukon River
Saturday. Strong winds developing near the Alaska Range Passes
today with gusts around 50 mph producing blowing and drifting snow
that may impact travel at times. Strong winds also occurring in
the Bering Strait and on St Lawrence Island today. Low persisting
of the Arctic Coast will gradually weaken as it moves over
Wainwright by Friday afternoon. Temperatures cooling slowly.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...09/00Z solutions in generally good agreement through the
short term with some minor issues with the details. Pattern
change slows some as the trough digs south and holds over the
eastern half of the state, while ridging builds north over the
Bering Sea and Siberia sliding east of the West Coast this
weekend. Will be using mostly a general blend of the solutions
for the short term and leaning on the Ensemble means for the
extended periods. Will make some adjustments to the winds in the
Arctic using the CanadianReg, and will be kicking the winds up on
St Lawrence Island based on stronger winds already occurring. For
precipitation will be kicking the probabilities up around
Fairbanks to match current conditions.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...A 492 dam low is about 100 nm northwest of
Utqiagvik and will move south over Wainwright by Friday evening. A
trough extends east then south from the low over MacKenzie Bay,
and a trough extends southwest from the low over the Northwest
Arctic Coast. A 494 dam low has developed south of the the Gulf of
Anadyr and moved to 100 nm west of St Lawrence Island this
morning with a trough extending east over Nome to Nenana to
McCarthy. The 489 dam dam low that was over Northern Kamchatka
yesterday has moved over the coast 200 nm west of the Gulf of
Anadyr. A 501 dam low had developed this morning and is over the
Pribilofs. By this afternoon not much change in the Arctic as the
low remains quasi stationary, while the low near St Lawrence
Island will move to 100 nm south of the island. The low over the
coast will moved southeast over the Central Bering Sea as it
weakens to 494 dam. The low over the Pribilofs will move over King
Salmon at 491 dam. Weak ridging that was pushing north over the
southwest mainland this morning will move east with the axis
extending northwest over Haines to Tok to Fairbanks to Norton
Sound. By Friday morning the ridging will slide east as the axis
drifts north over the Upper Yukon Flats extending west to Norton
Sound. The low in the Arctic will be quasi stationary but drift a
bit closer to the coast. The low that was over King Salmon will
be over Cook Inlet at 492 dam with a trough extending east over
the Gulf of Alaska Coast. The lows over the Bering Sea will merge
and move over Nunivak Island at 495 dam. Friday afternoon b road
troughing over the state with the low in the Arctic over
Wainwright at 490 dam, and a low in the Northern Gulf of Alaska at
490 dam. A 493 dam low will develop and move over the Upper
Tanana Valley in the Yukon Territory. At 850 hpa...Temperatures
cooling to -20C to -30C by Saturday morning.

Surface...Bubble high that was over southwest mainland yesterday
has moved over the Fortymile Country with high pressure extending
northwest over the Upper Yukon Flats. A 982 mb low persists 100 nm
northwest of Utqiagvik and will slowly drift toward the coast.
Trough of low pressure persists over the Gulf of Alaska Coast as
low in Prince William Sound weakens. Low pressure over the Bering
Sea with a 979 mb low near St Lawrence Island with a weather front
extending east across Norton Sound to Nenana to McCarthy. A 982 mb
low that was near the Kamchatka Peninsula yesterday has moved into
the Central Bering Sea. A 960 mb low that moved into the Bering
Sea overnight is near the Pribilofs. This afternoon the low near
the Pribilofs will move to King Salmon while the other lows in the
Bering Sea will weaken and high pressure over the Eastern Interior
will be pushed east, while high pressure will develop over the
Copper River Basin. Leeside troughing developing north of the
Alaska Range today with tight pressure gradient across the Alaska
Range that will produce south winds gusting to around 50 mph this
afternoon and evening.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Low persists in the Western
Arctic and will continue to spin clouds and flurries or light snow
into the Northwest and Central Arctic Coast through tonight as the
low drifts near Wainwright. Some clearing to the east of
Utqiagvik early today, then increasing clouds and a chance of snow
as the winds swing around to northeast. Along the coast from
Utqiagvik west, southwest winds 15 to 25 mph becoming south from
Wainwright to Utqiagvik as the low moves over Wainwright. East of
Utqiagvik winds from the south at 10 to 20 mph will turn from the
east and northeast by late this afternoon at 5 to 15 mph. Variable
winds to 10 mph in the plains, while south winds around 10 mph
will prevail in the Brooks Range into the evening, then turn from
the northeast overnight. Highs today in the single digits above
and below, while lows tonight will range from the single digits
below along the coast to the teens below in the plains and Brooks
Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...A weather is bringing snow to
the southern half of the Seward Peninsula and areas to the south
this morning as it continues to weaken. Snow will taper off
through the morning and early afternoon as the front slowly
dissipates. A strong low moving south of the area will keep some
snow in the Lower Yukon Delta, and the Upper Kuskokwim Valley, a
bit longer but it will be ending overnight after around 2 inches
of snowfall south of Anvik and around McGrath. Strong north winds
are developing in the Chukchi Sea and Northeastern Bering Sea
with snow squalls possible on St Lawrence Island and potential
for Freezing Spray to be lofted on shore along the north side of
the island as the temperatures fall. Winds on the Capes and St
Lawrence Island have increased to 20 to 30 mph gusting to 40 mph
this morning and will peak with gusts to around 50 mph this
afternoon. Blowing snow will impact visibility on the Bering
Strait Coast and St Lawrence Island. Winds in the remainder of the
coastal areas 10 to 20 mph and gusty, while moving inland winds
will be less than 10 mph. Highs today from the single digits
below north of the Bering Strait to teens above in the Lower
Yukon Delta. Lows tonight will range from teens below north of the
strait to single digits above and below in the Lower Yukon Delta.

Central and Eastern Interior...Light snow and flurries tapering
off late in the morning to early in the afternoon from the west as
the decaying front in the area moves east and northeast.
Additional snowfall generally less than one inch. Another front
will develop over the area Friday night with more snow on tap for
Saturday and Sunday with 2 to 5 inches of snow south of the Yukon
River. Gusty winds developing near the Alaska Range passes this
afternoon with gusts around 50 mph and locally some blowing and
drifting snow that may impact travel at times into the evening.
Southeast winds will also pick up around Delta Junction to 15 to
25 mph and gusty winds blowing and drifting snow. Winds in the
remainder of the area will be variable to 10 mph. Temperatures
cooling the remainder of the week. Highs today mostly in the
single digits above and below, while lows tonight will fall to
zero to 20 below.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...A push of cold air into the
state will push temperatures down next week with lows falling to
20 below to 30 below over much of the forecast area under mostly
clear skies through Tuesday. A strong winter storm will move to
the West Coast Wednesday bringing another round of wind, snow, and
potential for blizzard conditions over much of the West Coast
before the front moves inland Thursday.
