Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Upper level troughing remains in place as the storms roll across
the Pacific and into the Gulf of Alaska. This continues to support
northerly winds down the Bering Strait with cold wind chills and
areas of blowing and drifting snow. Elsewhere, light snow
continues from the Yukon Delta to the Eastern Interior. Bitter
cold temps remain over the North Slope. A winter storm will move
into the West Coast Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
A broad 501 dam trough is centered right over the middle of the
Mainland with a weakening surface low down in Bristol Bay. A weak
shortwave is drifting west along the North Slope, bringing clouds
and some clouds and light snow showers/flurries. Light snow is on
and off over the Eastern Interior in association with a very
subtle ripple of energy aloft, which does show up on satellite
imagery. A strong northerly gradient persists with 35-50 mph winds
impacting the immediate West Coast along with areas of blowing and
drifting snow.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Upper troughing over the area will continue to support periodic
light snow and flurries through tomorrow. Some light accumulations
are possible but will generally be an inch or less. Clouds will
hang on through Thursday morning with temps dropping heading later
into the week as high pressure builds in. North winds will become
breezy through the AK Range passes tonight through Wednesday
night with some blowing and drifting snow. A north gradient will
persist in the Brooks Range today and tonight then they switch to
the south 15-30 mph on Thursday through Friday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Light snow over the Yukon Delta and Lower Yukon shifts east into
the Interior tonight. Strong north winds along the West Coast
continue to support areas of blowing and drifting snow and this
will continue through tomorrow morning before quickly ending.
Bitter cold wind chills will also come to an end as cold high
pressure settles in.

Attention quickly turns to a strong storm force front which will
likely bring blizzard conditions to Saint lawrence Island and
areas of significant snow and blowing snow to all of the West
Coast. Stay tuned for this storm on Thursday afternoon through
Thursday night.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A weak shortwave trough is bringing clouds and some light snow
showers to the area, along with some very cold temps as they
remain in the -20 to -40 F range. A north gradient will persist
in the Brooks Range today and tonight then they switch to the
south 15-30 mph on Thursday through Friday. A front will move to
the western half of the North Slope on Wednesday night and
Thursday bringing strong east to southeast winds with some blowing
and drifting snow along the immediate coastlines.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
