Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Several rounds of snow on tap for much of Northern Alaska south of
the Yukon River. The first round of snow is slowly diminishing
over the Central Interior this afternoon and will diminish this
evening over the Eastern Interior. A second round of snow will
push into the Interior on Friday and will bring an additional 1
to 3 inches over much of the Interior south of the Yukon River and
3 to 5 inches near McGrath. A third round moves in on Saturday
and continue into Sunday, and a 4th round pushes into the Lower YK
Delta on Monday. Very low wind chill values will continue into
Friday and possibly Saturday on the North Slope and the Bering
Strait and Chukchi Sea Coast.

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft at 500 hpa, a trough extending from near Banks Island
southwest to near Nome will continue to weaken and push north and
east as a strong longwave ridge over the Northern Pacific builds
north and east into Northern Alaska over the next several days. A
shortwave currently over the Central Interior continues to push
east into the Yukon by Friday morning. A second and much weaker
shortwave will push east over the Western Interior this afternoon
and the Central Interior late this evening and will bring another
round of light snow as it passes to the east into the Yukon by
Friday morning. A stronger shortwave pushes north east along the
ridge onto the West Coast on Saturday and into the Interior Sunday
and will help position the Longwave trough over Central Alaska by
Sunday. A Ridge quickly builds over the West Coast behind the
exiting trough late on Sunday ans a deep trough with a 495 dam low
establishes itself over the Eastern Bering Sea on Monday. All said
this will be an active and quick moving pattern with several
rounds of snow pushing through Northern Alaska into early next
week. 850 hpa temperatures currently in the 22 to 25 below range
over the North Slope and West Coast north of the Seward Peninsula
will continue into early next week.

On the surface a low pressure trough over the Southeast Interior
continues to weaken and push slowly south and east while a 1034
hpa ridge over Siberia builds east over the Chukchi Sea and the
North Slope through the weekend. A 1000 hpa low in the Southern
Bering Sea will weaken as it pushes into Bristol Bay and the Lower
YK Delta on Saturday. As the low pushes inland expect another
round of snow to push inland especially south of the Seward
Peninsula and further east into the Western and Central Interior
to the south of the Yukon River Saturday and Sunday. The low
redevelops over South Central Alaska on Sunday and pushes into the
Southern Yukon Sunday night. A 955 mb low in the Central Bering
Sea Sunday afternoon will push east swinging a strong front into
the Lower YK Delta Sunday night and Monday brining another round
of snow and blowing snow to the area.

Central and Eastern Interior...Winter weather advisories continue
into this evening for portions of the Interior where storm total
snowfall in the 4 to 6 inch range are possible in the higher
elevations and over the highway summits while storm totals in the
6 to 10 inch range are expected in the Alaska Range. A brief
respite is expected tonight and Friday morning before more snow
moves back into the area Friday night and Saturday with most
locations receiving 1 to 3 inches on the Friday night Saturday
event. A few locations near Minchumina are expected to receive
another 3 to 5 inches in to Saturday. More snow expected for the
Interior on Sunday into Monday as the next system pushes through
the area. In general most locations in the Central and Eastern
Interior south of the Yukon river will likely receive 4 to as much
as 8 inches of snow through Monday of next week with multiple
waves of snow passing through the area.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Wind chill warnings stay in effect for most of the north slope
through at least Friday afternoon as winds will increase and cold
temperatures persist. Temperatures expected to remain well below
normal going into the weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Snow continues to dissipate this afternoon over the Western
Interior. Low wind chills continue for the Chukchi Sea Coast and
the Bering Strait and will continue into Friday evening as low
temperatures and gusty winds continue. The next snow event is
expected to begin Friday afternoon and evening as a rapidly
developing low will bring snow and increasing east winds to the
region. A strong low in the Central Bering Sea late Sunday and
Monday will push a strong front into the Lower YK Delta and
southern portions of the Western Interior Monday. Temperatures are
expected to remain below normal into the weekend.
