Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A series of storm systems will bring snowfall to the West Coast
mainly south of the Seward Peninsula and much of the Interior
south of the Yukon river starting today and extending through
the weekend. Blowing snow is expected over the summits in the
northern Interior due to increased winds today. There will also
be southerly winds that will develop today across the Alaska Range
Passes.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The models in general are still indicating an active weather
period through the weekend with various systems brining in snow
and winds. There are still differences in the exact locations of
the higher snow amounts but the timing is staring to align. For
the winds on the west coast, the Canadian model seemed to work out
as the winds were slightly strong but for the Beaufort coast
leaned more towards GFS.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a ridge extends over the Bering Sea with the a
trough across much of North Slope and Eastern Interior. A
shortwave trough will push east, already impacting the Yukon
Delta area this morning as seen from satellite and Bethel radar.
Once the shortwave moves through by Friday, there will be a more
zonal flow over much of the forecast area going into the weekend.
A series of shortwaves will push east through the westerly flow
tonight through the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range... Winds along the Arctic Coast have
diminished across the area with exception to Cape Lisburne but it
is expected to diminish through the early morning. May struggle a
bit on the Wind Chill advisory as there is plenty cold air mass
in place but the winds have tapered off, but may be close.
However, winds along the Beaufort Sea coast along Barter Island
show winds increasing later this morning and afternoon. In
addition to the cold wind chill values, the eastern Arctic Coast
will see blowing snow that will reduce the visibility to one half
mile or less at times which will be the Winter Weather Advisory.
While remained with Wind Chill Advisories for the western Arctic
Coast and Central Beaufort coasts. Very cold temperatures are
expected to remain across the areas through week with low
temperatures ranging from 30 to 40 below.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A front is slowly pushing towards the Yukon Delta area this
morning as winds have increased across Scammon Bay up to 23 mph
and visibilities have dropped down to around 1 to 2 miles early
this morning. However, do not think the visibility and winds will
remain for long with this initial push as the front moves towards
the Western Interior this afternoon. This will be the first in a
series of systems that brings active weather to the area. The
greatest chances of snow is expected late tonight into Wednesday
morning in the Lower Yukon and Middle Yukon Valleys then with
greatest chances shifting eastward towards Upper Kuskokwim on
Wednesday into Thursday. Along with snow will bring a push of
warmer air with each system. Snowfall with this system will taper
off rapidly north of the Yukon River. Total snow accumulations
starting today through Thursday can expect 3 to 4 inches across
the Yukon Delta area, 4 to 6 inches from the Lower Yukon and
Middle Yukon Valleys and highest amounts from 6 to 10 inches
across the Upper Kuskokwim Valley.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Some light flurries started out along eastern portions of Middle
Tanana Valley overnight but temperatures will continue to drop
this morning. The Fairbanks International airport as of 3am
dropping to 31 below. However, this will be the last cold night
temperatures as more active weather pattern will occur brining
slow accumulating snow and warmer temperatures through the week.
While there is still some uncertainty of the exact location of the
heaviest snowfall, timing is better aligned. Total snow amount
from today through Thursday can expect 3 to 5 inches across the
Middle Tanana Valley, 4 to 6 inches Central Interior and highest
amounts from 6 to 10 inches across the Alaska Range. In addition
gusty winds continues across the summits particularly with the
Winter Weather Advisory for Eagle and Twelvemile Summits. Winds
across Indian Mountain area has diminished this morning and have
allowed the Winter Weather Advisory expire. Expect gusty winds
along the eastern Alaska Range today which will also bring blowing
snow to Isabel Pass with gusts up to 50 mph, which have kept the
Winter Weather Advisory for today.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 through 7...
Beginning the extended on Friday, the area will remain active
weather particularly for areas south of the Yukon River where the
heaviest snowfall amounts expected. The North Slope and Arctic
Coast will remain dry through the extended period with the coldest
temperatures.
