High pressure will continue to push S over the Chukchi Sea as a
1031 mb low moves into the southwest Arctic tonight. A strong 
area of low pressure south of the Aleutians will push a front 
north into the Eastern Bering Sea on Thursday and Friday.

.SYNOPSIS...
One more night of deep cold in the interior before temperatures
begin to moderate as clouds move into most of the interior and
light snow moves into the Central and Western Interior to the west
and north of Fairbanks Wednesday and Thursday. Cold will persist
over the Arctic as very strong high pressure slowly drifts to the
north through Thursday. Snow and blowing snow will push into the
Western Interior and West Coast Wednesday and Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...
Models...
The 09/12Z model suite initialized well against the 12z surface
analysis and verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model
solutions remain in pretty good agreement in handling the low
moving across the state and ridging building over the state from
the east as the low rotates over the Arctic. Better agreement has
emerged over the suite of models in the midrange and extended
periods as compared to the last several model runs.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...A 517 dam low has moved over the Central
Brooks Range. Ridging extends from the Northeast Pacific over
Kodiak Island and Bristol Bay and St Matthew Island then
northwest to a 553 dam high 300 nm northeast of the New Siberian
Islands. The low over the Central Brooks Range will move over the
Western Brooks Range as a 513 dam Wednesday morning. Ridging will
remain to the south of the Alaska Range, and west of the
Dateline. The low will continue to move northwest to be 200 nm
northwest of Wainwright at 507 dam with ridging pushing west over
the state as a 555 dam high over the Canadian Archipelago moves
southwest over the Yukon Territory through Thursday afternoon. At
850 hpa...-20C isotherm lies from McCarthy to Minchumina to
Deering to Point Hope this evening and the area of sub -20c
temperatures at 850 mb will continue to slowly retreat to the
north through Thursday. Temperatures will slowly moderate through
the rest of the week as clouds move in over the area and a warmer
airmass moves in from the southeast.

Surface...
A 1066 mb high pressure system centered 350 nm north of Prudhoe
Bay will strengthen to near 1070 mb on Wednesday and then weaken
again as it moves further north into the Beaufort Sea. This
feature will keep very cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills
to near 70 below over the coastal areas of the North Slope into
Thursday morning. Temperatures will be well below climatological
normals over Northern, Central and Eastern Alaska through the
rest of the week, however clouds and light snow will moderate
temperatures in the Western Interior and West Coast to slightly
below normal. We are moving into a drier period in the Central
and Eastern, however the Western Interior and West Coast will get
some light snow tomorrow and Thursday with generally 2 to 4 inches
of snow expected over most areas and 4 to 6 inches of snow
expected in the Nulato hills through Friday. The very low wind
chills currently found over the Interior Summits and channeled
areas of the Central and Eastern Interior, the Alaska Range as
well as the Western Interior and along the West Coast will be
moderating as temperatures increase with the clouds and winds
decrease.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Wind Chill warnings remain in
effect. Mostly clear and cold will continue with some stratus and
patchy fog floating around especially late in the day Wednesday
and into Thursday. Winds will decrease and combined with warming
temperatures will help moderate the ongoing very cold wind chills
on Thursday.

West Coast and Western Interior...Wind Chill Advisories remain in
effect for the area. Mostly clear and cold tonight will give wave
to an increase in clouds and snow that will spread into the area
Wednesday and Thursday. Generally 2 to 4 inches of snow is
expected with 4 to 6 inches expected in the Nulato Hills through
Friday morning.

Central and Eastern Interior...Wind Chill and Winter Weather
Advisories remain in effect. Mostly clear skies will continue
through this evening and then widespread cloud cover is expected
to move in late tonight and remain in place tomorrow. Light snow
generally in the 1 to 2 inch range is expected north and west of
Fairbanks. South and east of Fairbanks will generally be dry with
weak chinook flow over the Central and Eastern Alaska Range. The
Tanana Valley Jet continues this evening and into tomorrow
morning. Very low Wind Chills are expected through noon tomorrow
in the Delta Junction area. Winds are also expected to pick up
through the Alaska Range Passes late tonight and continue on
Wednesday. A brief period of very low wind chills may accompany
the winds as the start later tonight and Wednesday morning before
temperatures increase.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Much of the forecast area will
remain mostly clear with cool temperatures. Low pressure in the
Bering Sea will send some snow up the West Coast at times.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
