A 985 mb low near Provideniya will move to 200 NM west of Cape 
Lisburne as a 997 mb low by 3pm Fri, then to 200 NM north of 
Wrangel Island as a 1005 mb low by 3pm Sat, then continue moving 
northwest. A second low now in the southeast Bering Sea will move 
to the Seward Peninsula as a 1001 mb low by 3pm Fri then persist 
into Sat. A third low will move into the southeast Bering Sea on 
Fri, then move to the Yukon Delta as a 989 mb low by 3pm Sat.

northwest. A weather front stretching from this low to Cape

the southeast Sering Sea will move to the Yukon Delta as a 1000 MB
low by 3pm Sat, then move to Norton SOund as a 1007 mb low by 3pm

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The primary weather concerns will be focused mainly across the
west coast as a series of lows continue to track north across the
eastern Bering Sea. Strong winds and heavy snow will cause low
visibility in blowing snow with significant accumulation possible,
particularly along south facing slopes. Warm air will support
mixed precipitation at times across the immediate coast south of
the Bering Strait and lower Yukon region. Strong southerly winds
are expected across the Alaska Range which will support above
average temperatures across the Tanana Valley as well as strong
southerly flow through the Alaska Range.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft 500 mb...
A longwave ridge encompasses much of the state, although a
weakening shortwave trough does bisect the state from north to
south. A broad trough anchored across much of the Bering Sea and
northwest Pacific contains several height minima. The longwave pattern
will shift east, resulting in strong southerly flow across the
Interior and a series of lows set to impact the Alaskan West
Coast. This general setup will remain in place into the weekend.
Solutions diverge significantly beginning Saturday, so the long
term forecast remains tricky.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A weakening surface trough will support flurries across the region
with light east winds through tonight. High pressure will remain
entrenched over the Beaufort sea as a strong low creeps northward
into the Chukchi Sea Thursday. East winds will gradually increase
and could result in reduced visibility due to blowing snow,
particularly along the coast west of Utqiagvik where a Winter
Weather Advisory is in effect beginning Thursday morning. A front
associated with the Chukchi low will track east late Thursday and
could bring up to about an inch of snow through Friday for much
of the region. Isolated portions of the western Brooks Range could
see locally 3 to 6 inches of snow along south facing slopes.
Warmer temperatures are expected Friday into the weekend with
southerly flow prevailing across the Brooks Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A slew of Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories are in effect for
western Alaska as the next in a series of lows moves north up the
eastern Bering Sea. Heavy snow, wind and potentially mixed
precipitation are all potential hazards this evening into Friday.
The mixed precipitation will mainly be confined to the lower Yukon
Valley and Y-K Delta south of Galena, as well as portions of the
immediate coast south of the Bering Strait where warmer air will
briefly move onshore. Snow amounts will vary with elevation, with
coastal and valley areas expecting generally 2 to 4 inches of
snow, with 4 to 8 inches in the higher elevations. South facing
slopes along the Seward Peninsula, Nulato Hills, and western
Brooks Range could see even greater amounts through Friday. South
to southeast winds gusting to 50 mph at times may significantly
lower visibility and result in blizzard conditions at times along
much of the immediate coast.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A high pressure ridge will dominate the eastern half of the state
into Saturday. Southerly flow along the western flank of the ridge
will support strong winds through Alaska Range Passes through
Friday and a general increase in temperatures across the region.
Winds may gust over 60 mph at times through Alaska Range passes,
and a High Wind Advisory is in effect through Friday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
