Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Another mild afternoon over much of the Central and Eastern
Interior south and east of Fairbanks while rain and snow showers
are found north and west of Fairbanks as a front pushes north
into the Northern Interior. Another round of strong winds are just
beginning this afternoon along and near the Alaska Range passes
and Northern Foothills and are expected to increase this evening
before diminishing Thursday morning. A the few rain and snow
showers along the West Coast and Western Interior will diminish
tonight as high pressure builds into the area. A series of fronts
will bring periods of strong winds and blowing snow to the North
slope beginning Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper levels and Analysis...
A high amplitude ridge trough ridge pattern exists over the
Central Bering Sea, Western Alaska and Yukon. The longwave trough
over Western Alaska is anchored by a 527 dam low over the Bering
Strait. A strong shortwave currently over the Southern Interior
continues to push rapidly north this afternoon and pushing onto
the North Slope tonight. The anchoring low for the longwave trough
will push south into the northern Gulf of Alaska by Thursday and
will become cutoff as high pressure aloft builds rapidly north and
east out of the Central Bering Sea into the West Coast and
Western Interior by Friday. This will produce a more period of
tranquil weather for the much of the West Coast and Interior while
a series of fast moving fronts will push east along the North
Slope and will produce a period of stormy weather there.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The upper low over the Bering Sea tonight and will bring an end
to the remaining rain and snow showers as a high pressure system
builds in over the area. A front currently pushing north and west
Fairbanks will bring a mix of rain and snow to the Western
Interior and Lower Yukon through early Thursday, with a possible
1-2" of snow before it weakens and lifts northeast Thursday night.
Dry weather will dominate thereafter for most of the storm weary
coast. The next feature of interest is a strong front which will
cross the Bering Strait and move onto the northwest Arctic Coast
Friday, bringing a burst of very strong winds and snow showers and
blowing snow.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Ongoing quiet weather along the North Slope and over the Brooks
Range with pretty light pressure gradients and weak southerly flow
aloft will begin to change late Thursday and into Friday. A front
moving over the Eastern Brooks Range onto the Arctic Coast,
bringing accumulating snow this evening through Thursday east of
the Dalton Highway, with the exception being Atigun Pass where
light snow accumulations are expected. Dry weather moves back in
as the front pushes north of the area tomorrow before a strong
front pushes east out of the Chukchi Sea and onto the Western
North Slope on Friday. This system will bring very strong winds
to the West Arctic and Western brooks on Friday with blowing snow
expected. Questions remain about just how much the snow will blow
around given the mid April sun. If it is all crusted over, it may
not be that much. Nonetheless, given the strength of the flow
alone, expect widespread blowing and drifting over the western
half of the Brooks Range and North Slope Fri and Fri night.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A deep low that pushed north out of the Gulf of Alaska this
morning will continue to push north over the Alaska Range early
this evening and into the northern Interior tonight bringing with
it a surge of strong chinook winds across the Alaska Range,
including hurricane force gusts expected to develop through Isabel
Pass this evening. The surface low will track across the Minto
Flats later this evening, which will also pull some gusty south
winds through the Tanana Valley especially near Delta Junction.
Mixed rain and snow will move across the White Mountains north and
west this evening with snow accumulations are expected to minimal
for most locations and a general 1-2" favoring the Dalton Highway
westward. This band of rain/snow begins to fall apart Thursday
morning and falls apart completely by Friday morning.

Ridging will gradually build in and dominate the pattern from Friday
onward, with temps warming well above average as a blocking high
builds over the state for the weekend.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
Models continue to struggle in the long range with high degree of
however most guidance is now favoring a powerful blocking high
dominating the entire pattern over the state. What this means is
significant warm anomalies are expected over most if not all of
the Northland, along with dry weather.

HYDROLOGY...
Temps in the Interior could be approaching the 60s Sunday and
Monday in the Interior. The snowpack will continue to ripen
through the weekend with hydrological impacts becoming a concern
in the Southern Interior with runoff from the snowpack in lower
elevations as temperatures reach these levels. Will need to
monitor freezing levels and night time temperatures.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
