.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The cold upper level low pressure system that was over the Yukon has
dropped south towards the panhandle. This has brought cold and
dry conditions down to the surface for much of Southcentral
Alaska with temperatures dropping well below negative in some
areas.

An upper level front out west continues eastward as it is
currently stationed across the central Aleutians and Bering Sea.
This continues to bring an increase to winds and waves across the
marine locations. Sleet, snow, blowing snow and dangerously cold wind
chill values continue across the Kuskokwim Delta and Bristol Bay.

Model guidance remains in overall good agreement on synoptic scale
features.

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions and light northerly winds will persist for
much of the day. This evening, there is a chance for snow that can
bring ceilings and visibilities down to MVFR conditions.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2...Tuesday
and Wednesday)...

An upper level ridge remains in place over Southcentral, for the
time being, this morning. However, as the day goes on this ridge
is expected to continue breaking down and be pushed off to the
south and east as a frontal system approaches from the southwest.
The main theme for today across Southcentral is the cold
temperatures with increasing clouds throughout the day. Clouds are
already increasing this morning over Kodiak Island as the front
moves into the region. The air mass looks to remain cold enough
for Kodiak to remain all snow as this front moves through the area.
Another item that supports all snow for Kodiak this time around
is a new wave of low pressure which is expected to develop along
the front which will aid in pulling the cold air southward. A
general 1 to 3 inches is expected for Kodiak as this front moves
through today. The best time for snow is later this morning through
this evening. Also, the Matanuska Valley wind continues to blow
this morning into Wasilla with gusts up to 40 mph. These winds
are expected to subside as the morning goes on as the pressure
gradient eases.

Attention then turns to late this afternoon through Wednesday. A
frontal system to the south, near Kodiak, will continue to move
northward bringing some light snow to Southcentral. Most of the
moisture with this is expected to go to the typical areas around
Prince William Sound and the eastern Kenai Peninsula tonight
through Wednesday morning. From Homer northward to Kenai,
Anchorage, and the Mat-Su Valleys, there continues to remain some
disagreement as to the magnitude of the upper level shortwave
that is poised to move through the area as well as the amount of
moisture. Models have been back and forth on this idea but
overnight have come back to the snowier solution. Therefore, the
chances for snow have increased this forecast package, however,
there still remains uncertainty as to how much snow for these
areas. With the very cold air mass in place, there is a question
as to how long it takes to saturate which will impact snow
amounts. Snow ratio will be another question as with the very cold
temperatures, snow ratios should be relatively high. For now,
current thinking is a general 1 to 2 inches of snow across much of
the area.

Wednesday afternoon, there might be some clearing as a transient
upper level ridge passes through. Another upper level shortwave is
expected to move through Wednesday evening that may bring
additional snow to mainly the Anchorage Hillside with only light
accumulations.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Tuesday and
Wed)...

The main front has arrived this morning with a large band of snow
extending from Hooper Bay to King Salmon. So far precipitation has
fallen as snow everywhere north of Egegik with the exception of
freezing rain and ice pellets over Cape Newenham. Dual-pol radar
signatures indicated some melting aloft overnight, but have
transitioned to uniform precipitation type this morning. The front
arrived slower than anticipated, especially over inland areas of
the Y-K Delta. As such, snow totals were lowered for the remainder
of today for the Y-K Delta with Bethel expected to get around 6
inches. Winds will continue to produce blowing snow throughout the
region, but will gradually subside throughout the day. A surface
low has formed over the eastern Bering, which shifted upper level
and surface flow over Bristol Bay to the southwest. This is
helping to bring more precipitation and less downsloping to the
King Salmon area, so snow totals have been increased to around 5
inches.

The front should gradually lose its steam as it moves further
inland. As such, the snow totals for the Middle Kuskokwim are
around 4 inches tonight and 1-2 inches on Wednesday. A few spotty
snow showers can't be ruled out on Wednesday for the Y-K delta as
a weak shortwave moves over the area. Otherwise mostly cloudy
skies and quiet weather are expected on Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2: Tuesday
and Wednesday)...

A front will stall over the eastern AKPen today bringing light
rain. This should move out of the area tonight. Meanwhile the next
front extending off of a Kamchatka low will reach the western
Aleutians this morning with gale force winds, rain and snow. This
front is well disconnected from the upper level center and will
move very slowly across the Aleutians, reaching Adak Wednesday
afternoon. Otherwise, the central and eastern Bering will be
relatively calm.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

Gulf of Alaska: Gusty northwest outflow winds across the Barren
Island and Kamishak Gap are possible Thursday morning. By Thursday
night, an approaching low will lift northward and tighten
pressure gradients. This will increase winds to gale force for
Friday. There is the potential for storm force winds with this
front, though models are inconsistent with the strength of the low at
this time. Broad low pressure will be in place across the Gulf
Saturday with residual gale force winds possible.

Bering Sea: A gale force front will be stalled over the central
Bering Thursday. By Thursday night, there is increasing confidence
that a strong low will approach the western Aleutians with storm
force winds possible, however confidence remains low regarding
where this storm will track. Meanwhile a North Pacific low will
lift over the Alaska Peninsula/eastern Bering Friday. This will
introduce gale force winds to the eastern Bering waters Friday
into Saturday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

The long term pattern features a ridge extending over the Gulf
and southern Mainland and shifting eastward. Upstream, an
elongated upper level low tracks eastward Friday and Saturday. At
the surface, a North Pacific low supported by this trough will
lift northward over the Alaska Peninsula. There is increasing
confidence that this low will strengthen as it moves northward
over Southwest Alaska through Saturday. The associated front
extending across the Gulf will lift northward, reaching the
northern Gulf coast by Friday. While confidence remains low on the
exact track and strength of this low, model solutions remain
consistent with this feature, and depict a moisture-laden system
across the southern half of the state Friday into Saturday. In the
wake of this low, a broad trough remains in place over the
western Bering with several additional lows forming along the
Aleutian Chain Saturday into Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, another
low develops over the western Bering, pushing a front eastward
through Monday. Overall, an active weather pattern will continue
through the weekend.
