.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A high amplitude trough extends from the Russian Arctic
southeastward across the northern to eastern Bering Sea, then
across Bristol Bay and the Alaska Peninsula into the North
Pacific. A vertically stacked low is centered over Bristol Bay,
drifting slowly southeastward, while a leading short-wave over
the western Gulf of Alaska rotates northwestward over top of the
low. A fairly narrow band of precipitation sits out ahead of the
trough across the Kenai Peninsula. The short-wave is causing this
band to lift northward across the peninsula and toward Anchorage.
Weak cold air advection has led to a transition from rain to snow,
especially across the western Kenai Peninsula, where there has
been some light snow accumulation. On the back side of the low
strong gusty winds and snow showers dominate much of the eastern
Bering, eastern Aleutians, and southern Alaska Peninsula. This is
due to tight pressure gradients west of the low center as well as
a series of short-waves and associated cold air advection along
the back side of the upper trough. Ridging is found on either side
of the trough, with quiet conditions across the western Bering and
Aleutians as well as the eastern half of Southcentral Alaska.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models continue to struggle with placement of narrow band of
precipitation over the Kenai Peninsula. The 18Z guidance seems to
be catching on with a general slower northward progression into
Anchorage. Another difference of note is with handling of a deep
storm system crossing the eastern Gulf of Alaska on Friday. The
GFS is an outlier in maintaining a much deeper low as it tracks to
the northern Gulf Friday night. Prefer the NAM/ECMWF/Canadian
which all rapidly weaken the low, with little impact on the
northern Gulf and Prince William Sound areas. Elsewhere, models
are in good agreement with large scale features over the next few
days.

.AVIATION...
PANC...While the details are hard to nail down, expect rain to
move into the area late this afternoon, leading to lowering
ceilings. Colder air will filter in tonight leading to a
transition from rain to snow. Timing in changeover is uncertain,
but most likely it will occur after 06Z. Then expect light snow to
linger through Friday morning, and possibly even into the
afternoon. The flow will slacken overnight, so conditions are
favorable for IFR conditions to settle in. Would not be surprised
if there was a period of LIFR, if not at the airport, then at
least in the vicinity.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Today through Sunday afternoon)...

A southeasterly plume of moisture is moving very slowly
northeastward across the Kenai Peninsula ahead of a weakening low
over Bristol Bay. This will eventually move into the Anchorage
area by this evening, however will dissipate in intensity
overnight through Friday morning. Initially precipitation will
fall as all rain or a mix, before transitioning to light snow by
the morning commute. As such, although widespread impacts are not
expected, slick conditions are possible particularly near the
Hillside. Model agreement diverges into the weekend, however
mostly cloudy skies, scattered show showers and cooler
temperatures are expected.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: This
afternoon through Sunday)...

The low over Bristol Bay will slowly move across the northern
AkPen and towards Kodiak Island tonight and Friday morning. This
low continues to spin off shortwaves producing areas of light snow.
The most significant shortwave is currently rotating across the
Lower Kuskokwim Valley and will move into the Kuskokwim Delta
tonight producing light snow. Snow with this feature will be in
the one to two inch range in most areas. Otherwise, expect a few
snow showers to linger through Friday across the area with little
to no accumulations expected. By Saturday an elongated upper level
trough will remain over the area with continued chances of snow
showers but nothing significant expected. Sunday the trough will
begin to move over the eastern Bering as a ridge tries to build
from the Interior of Alaska this will put an end to most of the
snow showers. Expect colder temperatures as we head into the
weekend with highs in the teens and 20s and lows in the teens to
single digits.

The AKPen will continue to see gusty northwest winds through
Saturday with snow showers with a couple of inches of snow over
the next couple of days. By Sunday the winds will decrease, but a
few snow showers will persist as cold air continues to move across
the Bering towards the AKPen.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

An upper level trough continues to sit across the eastern Bering
as well as a vertically stacked low over Bristol Bay. This has
ushered in cold northwesterly flow with Gales over most of the
eastern Bering and eastern Aleutians. Across the western Bering a
ridge will slowly move towards the central Bering Saturday and
Sunday this will bring quiet weather to this area. Another north
Pacific low will push a front into the western Aleutians and
southwest Bering Saturday and Sunday with Gales near the front and
rain.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Aleutians/Bering...The potential for gales over the western
Aleutians is favorable depending on the placement of the Northwest
Pacific south of the Aleutians Sunday morning. This situation
could elevate sea heights up to at least 14 ft through Sun
afternoon, then subsiding Sun night around the western Aleutians
to 8 ft. Meanwhile, the train of long-period swells continues
north across the offshore marine zone 411 until seas subside to
below 10 ft Mon night. Stronger winds from a North Pacific high
pressure could likely reinforce winds and seas on Mon night
keeping them elevated until Tue night. Forecast confidence is
above average.

Gulf of Alaska...Though long-period swells will make it across the
Gulf the next several days, but seas are expected to remain well
below warning thresholds. Thus, anticipate moderate seas through
Tuesday. Forecast confidence is above average.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Monday through Thursday)...

An extensive trough over the western Bering combined with strong
winds from a high pressure over the North Pacific could potential
elevate winds and seas for the western Aleutians between Mon and
Tue. As the trough dives into the deep North Pacific, a ridge of
high pressure builds across the Bering and the Aleutians into the
midweek followed by another wave of fresh to strong winds arriving
Thu morning over the western Aleutians.

Over southern Alaska, a pool of cold air advection races to the
Southwest starting Mon night with temperatures of -10 to -16
degrees Celsius at 850 mb filling most of Southwest and parts of
Southcentral into Wed afternoon. Dry but much colder conditions
are expected over much of southern Alaska, and we could likely
anticipate temperatures to drop below climatological normals later
in the week.
