Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A pair of lows, one in the northern Gulf entering Prince William
Sound, and a second near Cape Newenham, continue to keep abundant
cloud cover over all of southern mainland Alaska. A third low
over the western Bering is spreading rain over the western
Aleutians and central Bering. Meanwhile the heaviest rain along
the mainland is with the low near Prince William Sound, which is
primarily impacting the coastal mountains and adjacent
communities.

For interior communities, mostly cloudy skies with a few breaks
here and there are occurring, with a passing shower or area of
drizzle possible. Thus, with the exception of the north Gulf
coast, most areas are beginning a slow process of drying out.

In the upper levels, a longwave trough remains dominant over
nearly all of mainland Alaska and the Bering this afternoon. A
pair of shortwaves, one over Kodiak, and a second positively
tilted trough with the western Bering low, are moving eastward
around the larger longwave trough centered over western Alaska.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models remain in good agreement through Thursday afternoon
with the movement and strength of the larger lows moving over the
area. There still remains some discrepancies on the precipitation
amounts associated with the next front moving through Southwest
Alaska tonight and into Southcentral Wednesday through Wednesday
night. A second front moves into Southwest Alaska Thursday, but
the GFS primarily is keeping most of the associated rainfall
north of the area. Overall forecast confidence is above normal.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist through much of
tonight. Around midday Wednesday, the next front will move into
the area from the west, causing MVFR conditions and steady rain to
redevelop. The rain will persist into Wednesday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Friday)...

Through the next few days, increased rain and clouds will pass
through Southcentral as a result of distinct upper level lows and
troughs transiting from west to east, leading to more additional
rainfall and the potential for stronger gusts especially near the
gaps and passes. Two separate upper lows, one over the
southwestern Gulf of Alaska, and the second weakening low over the
western Prince William Sound (PWS), are feeding off of each other
with the latter system bringing additional rain across eastern
PWS and the northern Gulf this afternoon. As rainbands and
moisture from this system rotates across the north and west
direction, the scenario of light showers making their way over
Anchorage tonight is still feasible while the heaviest amount of
precipitation will linger over PWS into Wednesday morning.
Following this wet pattern, another strong and organized upper
level low from Yukon Delta will extend rapidly southeastward
through the Kuskokwim Mountains, directing clouds and a lot of
moisture toward the Alaska Range starting Wednesday morning. As
the low begins to lose its upper level composure, a substantial
area of moisture and the shortwave associated with the low could
march right through Southcentral between Wednesday night and
Thursday morning. This would boost winds up to 15 to 20 kt over
Shelikof Strait and Cook Inlet starting Wednesday afternoon
through Thursday evening. In fact, this situation should be
closely monitored as strong and gusty winds could arrive early and
may impact outer Kachemak Bay than what the solutions are
suggesting. If the trough stays on track, Kachemak Bay and the
southern Cook Inlet may encounter borderline small craft advisory
on Thursday.

On Friday, another large upper level trough extending from an
Arctic low dives right through the Southwest and Southcentral,
leading to more rain and clouds moving through the region between
Friday and Friday night. On the whole, these expected troughs and
series of shortwaves will dump a lot of rain across the region in
the coming days. The fast moving upper level ridges will allow for
breaks in showers, otherwise, it will be a very wet short term
over much of Southcentral and the Gulf of Alaska.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A series of upper level shortwaves and associated frontal systems
will move over Southwest Alaska from the north. The first of these
waves can be seen well on water vapor imagery this afternoon over
the Seward Peninsula. It will move south through the night,
bringing light rain to the Kuskokwim Delta and Valley early
tomorrow morning, reaching Bristol Bay after sunrise. For Bristol
Bay, most of the rain is expected to be over inland areas, though
a few showers are possible along the coastline with onshore flow.
After the rain passes, the sun should pop out in the afternoon
over the Kuskokwim Valley and eventually Bristol Bay around
sunset. The second shortwave will move in Thursday morning,
bringing another round of rain to the Kuskokwim Valley and Delta.
Bristol Bay should remain fairly dry with this system, though
some rain over inland areas and high terrain is possible. On
Friday the pattern will change through at least Saturday, with
clearer skies expected. However, clear skies, cool temperatures,
and shortwave ridging overnight Thursday will likely lead to
widespread fog Friday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

Fairly quiet weather is expected across the Bering through Friday.
A system capable of producing winds up to 30 kts is currently
over the Western Bering this afternoon and will weaken as it moves
over the Western Aleutians tomorrow morning. The upper level wave
will then merge with the jet stream, moving the system east along
the Aleutian Chain through Thursday afternoon. Periods of rain are
possible along the Chain though most of the precipitation will
remain offshore to the south. An additional trough will move over
the northern Bering Thursday morning, bring winds up to 25 kts
and rain near St. Matthew Island. On Friday, a shortwave ridge
will bring calm weather to the region.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

Expect winds less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft for the
Day 3 through 5 period.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through
Tuesday)...

There is quite a bit of model spread over the long term, however,
there is evidence of a low developing south of the AKPen, before
traveling eastward across the southern Gulf. Most of the associate
precipitation will likely get shunted off to the Southeast
Panhandle, however, periods of light rain showers may pop up
briefly along the Southcentral Coast.

Broad, longwave troughing takes over the Bering by early next
week. There is some surface reflection indicated across the
models, however, there are rather large discrepancies with it. The
EC is showing two separate lows pushing towards the Aleutians, one
towards the Western Aleutians and the other towards the AKPen. The
GFS on the other hand keeps one broad low moving across the Chain.
Both solutions show a large amount of precipitation associated
with it, though, there is not enough model agreement to pin down where
the rain will fall at the moment.
