Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The polar jet stream extends from the Kamchatka Peninsula to the
interior state of Alaska and into the Yukon Territory. Along the
polar jet, a positively tilted shortwave trough and associated
surface low is crossing the northern Bering Sea and moving toward
Norton Sound. The attendant cold front is bringing rain and
increasing winds over the Kuskokwim Delta coast and is expected to
spread south and east across the interior valleys and surrounding
high elevations today.

Further south, the subtropical jet stream extends from the
western Pacific to the south of the Aleutian Chain and into
southeastern Gulf of Alaska, with a 100+ kt jet streak in the left
exit region. Along the subtropical jet, a deepening shortwave
trough and strengthening North Pacific low with a deep fetch of
tropical moisture is approaching near the central Aleutians,
while a weaker wave is moving south of Kodiak Island. A transient
ridge ahead of the northern Bering trough is building across the
southern mainland, leading to benign conditions. The Nighttime
Microphysics (RGB) this morning shows partial clear skies over the
western Gulf, and localized areas of low clouds and fog as result
of residual moisture in the boundary layer trapped underneath the
ridge.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Overall, the latest operational model runs are in good agreement
with the synoptic scale features in the short term. The shortwave
trough axis and trailing cold will continue to move across the
Alaska Range, bringing a round of rain and windy conditions
across Southcentral by early Friday morning. Out west, models
remain consistent with the track and intensity with the
aforementioned North Pacific low moving near Adak by early Friday
morning, but deviate on the placement and evolution thereafter.
Some of the minor differences has to do with the interaction and
phasing of the upper level waves between the polar and subtropical
jets. Subsequent model will be needed for better consistency and
iron out specific details with timing of precipitation and wind.
Otherwise, forecaster confidence remains high for an active and
wet weather pattern as we head into the weekend.

.AVIATION...

PANC... VFR conditions and light winds will persist. Winds from
Turnagain Arm will turn more southerly and strengthen this evening
in response to a developing south to north pressure gradient
ahead of a cold front crossing the western Alaska Range.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2:
Today through Saturday morning)...

Generally clear and calm conditions prevail over much of
Southcentral this morning as a transient ridge slides across the
region. The exception to this is some mid and high-level cloud
cover lingering along the Alaska Range and Copper River Basin as a
weak wave moves overtop the ridge. Over the Gulf, an area of low
stratus continues to expand underneath the ridge. A light
southerly surface wind is drawing this cloud deck north into
Prince William Sound and along the eastern Kenai Peninsula, where
it is expected to remain throughout much of the day.

The ridge will begin to exit the region to the east later today
as a potent upper level low and associated surface front moves
toward the region from the west. A developing south to north
pressure gradient will quickly increase southerly winds this
evening across Cook Inlet and through favored gap locations,
including Turnagain Arm and the Copper River Basin. Guidance has
slowed the eastward progression of this feature a bit, but it
still looks on track to reach the Alaska Range by late Thursday
evening and move into Southcentral early Friday morning. There is
plenty of moisture with this system, and a deep southwesterly flow
should bring a quick-hitting round of moderate to heavy rain into
the Mat-Su Valleys Friday morning, with places like Talkeetna and
Palmer potentially seeing one half to two thirds of an inch of
rain. Farther south, rain will also fall across the Anchorage Bowl
and western Kenai Peninsula, but rainfall totals are expected to
be less, around a tenth to a third of an inch.

The upper-level wave will continue to trek east through Friday,
with rain pushing into the Copper River Basin by afternoon. Behind
the trough, winds will shift more westerly and eventually
northwesterly, ushering in cooler and drier air. Westerly winds
are expected to be rather strong, aided by not only the potent
shortwave, but a strengthening jet streak in the upper levels.
These winds will increase first across through Kamishak Gap and
across the southern Cook Inlet, Kachemak Bay, and the Barren
Islands, where gale force winds and waves building to over 10
feet are possible. Offshore gap winds are then expected to ramp up
for places like Whittier and Seward by Friday evening as the
trough departs and a ridge develops to the west. These gusty winds
will continue through the first half of Saturday with northerly
gusts also developing farther east for places like Valdez and
Thompson Pass.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today and
Friday)...

Active weather is expected today across Southwest Alaska as a
front continues pushing inland. Accompanying this front will be
increasing winds for the Kuskokwim Delta with gusts up to 35 mph
expected for Bethel especially this afternoon and evening. This is
expected to have impacts on the pedestal replacement currently
ongoing at the radar site. Breezy conditions are also expected
across interior locations of Southwest today and tonight as the
front moves through the area. Rain showers will also accompany the
front as it moves inland. Given the fairly moist 700 mb flow and
upslope against the western Alaska Range, places mainly east of
Lime Village may see rainfall amounts on the order of 1 to 2
inches of rain with locally 2"+ as the maximum amount of moisture
is able to be squeezed out of the atmospheric column. The heaviest
precipitation is expected to be between 0-3z Friday and 12-15z
Friday. While rain showers will continue especially across the
higher terrain of the Middle Kuskokwim Valley Friday, much of the
rest of Southwest is expected to begin drying out as an upper
level ridge begins to build into the area. Winds are also expected
to subside throughout the day on Friday as surface high pressure
begins to build into the area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2:
Today and Friday)...

A low pressure system moving across the northern and eastern
Bering today will bring small craft winds with even an area of
gales to the northeast of Saint Matthew Island as cold air wraps
around the back side of the low. Wave heights of 10 to 14 feet are
expected in the corridor where the gale force winds occur north
and east of Saint Matthew Island. Waves subside and winds will
diminish north and east of Saint Matthew Island this evening/overnight
as the low weakens and moves onshore near Nome, Alaska. A few
rain showers are expected around the Pribilofs through late
morning before moving off to the south and east and dissipating as
the front weakens (frontolysis). Elsewhere, expect fairly benign
weather conditions today with the usual low stratus and patchy fog
expected.

The next issue will be another low pressure system moving
north towards the Central Aleutians from the North Pacific this
evening/overnight. Expect this front to start impacting the marine
waters to the south of the Chain this evening with mainly high
end small craft advisory level winds and periods of rain. The
front continues northward impacting places such as Adak and Atka
around or after 12z/4am Friday with winds and periods of rain. The
unsettled weather conditions will spread eastward along the Chain
throughout the day Friday reaching Dutch Harbor by mid to late
morning Friday and then Cold Bay and Sand Point Friday afternoon.
The unsettled weather will then continue through Friday
evening/night as the low basically meanders south of Adak. Expect
rainfall amounts of 0.4-0.75" locally 0.75"+ for areas of the
Aleutians where rainfall remains the most persistent.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Saturday through Monday)...

Tropical moisture feeding into the frontal system over the western
Gulf combined with lingering cooler air ahead will bring gales
and hazardous seas up to 10 ft along Kamishak Bay and near Barren
Islands on Saturday. This same system will drive gales and
hazardous waves along the coast of Cordova on Monday if not
sooner. For the Bering/Aleutians, anticipate a relatively quiet
forecast except for small craft conditions across the eastern
Bering/Aleutians over the weekend.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Sunday through Wednesday)...

A rainy seasonal regime and strong winds are expected between
Sunday and Monday as a result of a stacked low and trough over the
eastern Bering combined with a high amplitude ridge extending
northwestward from the Gulf through Southcentral on Sunday and
Monday. The strong northern edge of the front will transport
gales and steady rain across Kamishak Bay, north of Shelikof
Strait and through Barren Island on Sunday. This same system will
extend across the Gulf before reaching eastern Prince William
Sound (PWS) on Sunday night, causing the barrier jet to form east
of Montague Island through the coast of Cordova on Monday. As the
front moves inland, gusty winds along gaps and passes will pick up
as well until the front dissipates Monday evening.

Over the Bering/Aleutians, a complex low and its broad frontal
boundary will steer a lot of rain and mainly small crafts and
gusty winds along the gaps and passes of the central/eastern
Aleutians and southern Alaska Range between Sunday and Monday.
Behind this event trails a ridge of high pressure that could
bring stratus and low cloud deck over central/eastern Bering
through at least Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, a Siberian low moves
quickly across the Bering, and it could bring brief gales over
the central Bering on Monday afternoon. On Wednesday, a North
Pacific low treks toward the western Gulf which could bring
active weather across Kodiak Island and the Gulf by midweek. All
in all, these expected patterns will continue to support wet
conditions and cool temperatures through much of the long term.
