.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A break in the active weather has commenced for most of the
eastern interior this morning as a strong ridge extending from
the Gulf all the way to the Beaufort Sea builds over most of
mainland Alaska. Light winds and clear to partly cloudy conditions
have set in across much of Southcentral, except for a few areas
of patchy fog along the Kenai Peninsula, Valdez Arm and Copper
River Basin. A weak occluded front is also working its way slowly
eastwards across the western Gulf and Alaska Range in association
with the large, vertically stacked low over the northern Bering.

Out west, the aforementioned low is racing north near St Matthew
Island. The low level center is weakening as it continues to lose
its support from the meridional jet branching over the Southwest
within the upstream portion of the strong longwave ridge in place
to the east. Very warm temperatures in the mid to upper 30s have
flooded into the Y-K delta and across the northern AKPEN to the
Kuskokwim Mountains in the wake of the now occluded front
spiraling out from the storm's center. Gusty south to southeast
winds are also continuing across much of the region with up to
gale force winds persisting over parts of the northern and eastern
Bering Sea as the storm departs quickly towards the Chukchi
Peninsula. The outer reaches of what will be the next impactful
system for the AOR in the coming days are now encroaching on the
Western Aleutians, but the majority of the storm's winds and
waves remain over open waters of the North Pacific for the time
being.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in good synoptic agreement with most synoptic features
over the next several days. Some differences persist with the
handling of the complex low and moving into the Aleutians/Bering
on Fri. However, agreement for the evolution of smaller scale
waves of energy embedded in the longwave trough has improved some
compared to 24 hours ago. There remains some concern for
precipitation type today and tonight as a couple of these
shortwaves move north across the Southwest within the expanse of
warm southerly flow. Model soundings generally still support
mainly an all rain or rain/snow mix with this event with surface
temperatures in the lowest elevations likely remaining a few
degrees above freezing during the bulk of the precip. Still,
resolving local scale impacts models may not be capturing and
when/where type changeovers will occur could still be challenging
over the next day or so.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. LLWS of around
20-30 kt is expected to persist during most of the TAF period due
to the stronger southeast flow just above the surface, or near
the 1000-1500 ft level.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A shortwave trough and associated surface front will move from
the AKPEN to the western Gulf as a ridge of high pressure over
Gulf slides east. These features will bring rain to Kodiak Island
this morning along with a mix of rain and snow to portions of the
Kenai Peninsula. Southeasterly winds will also be on the increase
over Kodiak Island this morning as the front advances. Although
the front weakens as it enters the western Gulf, precipitation
and gusty southeasterly winds will continue as a secondary
shortwave moves in behind the first, allowing the surface trough
to push farther into the northern Gulf. A weak cross-barrier flow
ahead of the trough will keep the bulk of the precipitation
confined to the immediate coast through Friday. However, a more
southerly flow over the Susitna Valley should allow for light
snow to develop by early Thursday afternoon for areas north and
west of Talkeetna, with snow continuing through Thursday night.
As the upper-level wave lifts north, the resultant flow will
shift to the southwest. The up-inlet flow will bring an increased
chance of light snow early Friday morning from Anchorage north to
Talkeetna.

A stronger front then looks to move into the western Gulf Friday
and lift toward Southcentral Friday night. A stronger cross-
barrier flow will keep much of the precipitation over the
immediate coast with the southeasterly flow also bringing in
warmer air. This will mean more areas of rain along the coast
with snow levels rising slightly. Gap winds will also be on the
increase Friday as the front moves from the western Gulf north to
the Kenai Peninsula.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

The low pressure that has been tracking through the Bering is just
exiting to the north through the Bering Strait. There will be a
brief break in the weather today before the next front moves into
Southwest Alaska this evening. This next low will push north
quickly, exiting the area by Friday morning. Southerly flow will
accompany this low as well, which means another round of warm
temperatures. Some small adjustments were made to temperatures and
precipitation tonight, though the forecast looks largely on
track. Precipitation still looks to be the issue, with a
temperature profile conducive to freezing precip briefly late
tomorrow morning for coastal areas. Adjustments were made to the
forecast for these areas tonight as well. Fortunately, the threat
for freezing rain passes (due to incoming warm air) before most of
the precipitation arrives, so the threat for accumulating
freezing rain is low.

By Friday afternoon, the next major front roles through,
extending from the next low moving through the Bering. This front
will be taking a similar course as the one that just passed.
Another push of warm air is expected with this low as well, so
expect more rain pushing into the interior. Overall, we are
confident in the forecast. Some tweaks may need to be made mainly
to precipitation type, but have high confidence in this
succession of low pressure systems.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

The low pressure system that has been tracking through the Bering
is just exiting to the north through the Bering Strait this
morning. So, weather will briefly calm for the Bering and
Aleutians. However, the next notable low will quickly move out of
the North Pacific and through the Central Aleutians this evening.
This next low will take about the same track as the one that just
passed, though it will wobble east into Norton Sound after
passing the Pribilofs. This low will also be much weaker, with
just some isolated areas of gale force winds, and should be
largely a small craft advisory strength low. The track of this low
means much of the Bering will continue to stay warm with
southerly flow. The Western Bering will stay a bit cooler on the
backside of the low.

It should also be noted that a weak low quickly moves through the
Eastern Aleutians and Bristol bay area this evening just ahead of
and further east of the previously mentioned low. This smaller
system will move quickly through and have more of an impact on
Southwest AK. On Saturday, another low moves into the Western
Bering. We have high confidence in this forecast as models have
been consistent run to run, so no major updates were made to the
forecast tonight.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5): Saturday through Monday...

Gulf of Alaska: Forecast confidence is good into the weekend. A
low in the Barren Islands moves along the North Gulf Coast, then
inland Sun. Its front moves across the Gulf through Sun. An
easterly gale force barrier jet along the North Gulf Coast moves
with the low through Sun. Widespread gale force winds follow the
front across the Gulf diminishing late Sun. High pressure moves
over the Gulf into Mon. Wave heights building to 22 feet move
across the Gulf through Sun and subsiding Mon.

Aleutians/Bering: Forecast confidence is good into the weekend. A
well-developed Eastern Bering low moves through Norton Sound for
Sun. Its front moves inland by Sun. A North Pacific low and front
approaches the Western Aleutians and Bering. Wave heights to 22
feet Pacific side and 16 feet Bering side of the Eastern Aleutians
and Alaska Peninsula Sat. Wave heights 28 feet Pacific side and
20 feet Bering side of the Western and Central Aleutians and
Bering for Sun and Mon.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7): Saturday through
Tuesday...

Upper level ridging pushes over the Southwest Mainland on Sunday,
and will briefly keep the shortwaves off the Bering Low from
moving across the Mainland. Thus, the Southwest will see a dry
period before the next system. Early next week the first of the
shortwaves moves across Southwest, allowing for some showery
conditions and a slight drop in temperatures. The weakening system
in the Gulf on Sunday will keep parts of Southcentral in above
normal temperatures and rain showers before dropping again early
to mid next week. By midweek, a second North Pacific system
crosses the Aleutian Chain and enters the Bering, pushing towards
the Southwest Coast. Multiple shortwaves look to move across
Southern Alaska, extending into the Eastern Gulf. Therefore,
another round of showery precipitation is likely across both the
Southcentral and Southwest regions.
