WATERS AND THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS...

A 1006 mb Kamchatka low moves to 342 NM West of St. Matthew 
Island at 996 mb by Fri afternoon, merging with a front that 
stretches across the Northern Bering to Northwest Alaska. A 1006 
mb low 156 NM Southwest of Attu merges with a 1012 mb low 441 NM 
South of Nikolski by Thu afternoon to form a 1004 mb low 188 NM 
South of Adak. It moves to 468 NM South of Buldir Island by Fri 
afternoon, with its front moving into the North Pacific.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The overall pattern for our forecast area continues to be high
pressure over Southcentral AK and troughing over the Bering Sea.
Southwest AK is the transition zone between the two, meaning a
frontal system is currently pushing ashore there. This front is
slow moving as its pushing up against the high in mainland AK and
has been providing steady rain to the Y-K Delta. The longwave
pattern has slowly moved a bit east over the past day, with the
high weakening and moving east. This has allowed upper level cloud
cover to move into Southcentral. It has also diminished low-level
stratus and fog over the Western Gulf.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models continue their run of good agreement to start the short
term. However, some disagreement emerges with trough placement in
Bering on Friday. By Saturday, there is significant disagreement
in the Bering with the place of low pressure as models as not
phased well with the synoptic pattern. Over Southcentral, a
transition pattern maintains being stuck between high and low
pressure. Historically there is uncertainty here as models can
have trouble picking up on weather features in this environment.
So, we start the short term with high model confidence but this
quickly erodes going into the weekend.

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 to 3)...

The dome of high pressure that has been hovering over
Southcentral will shift southward over the Gulf of Alaska this
evening as an upper level trough advances from the western Alaska
towards Southcentral. While this feature is juicy, given the
track... most of the moisture with this system will remain north
along the Alaska Range. The best chances for precipitation will
be in higher elevations. The exception to this will be the
northern Susitna Valley. But most of Southcentral looks dry the
next 72hrs with afternoon highs in the upper 60s and low 70s in
the lower elevations. Additional, sensible weather highlights for
Southcentral also include "gap winds". Gap winds expected this
afternoon and evening for Turnagain Arm and the Knik River Valley
as the trough approaches. These winds will diminish overnight and
redevelop on Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 to 3: Tonight
through Friday afternoon)...

A gale force front associated with an area of low pressure over
east Russia will bring unsettled conditions to Southwest through
the forecast period. The strongest winds (~35 kts or low end gale
force) with the front are expected in the marine waters around
Saint Matthew Island to Nunivak Island north towards Nome, Alaska.
Expect higher gusts as well up to 40 kts (45 mph). Expect
unsettled conditions for much of the Kuskokwim Delta throughout a
majority of the week in form of periods of rain and windy
conditions. Bethel will mainly have on and off showers into
Thursday morning before a steadier rain is expected late Thursday
morning through Thursday night as the front slows and even stalls.
Coastal areas of the Kuskokwim Delta may see upwards of 1-1.5" of
rain from this event with lesser amounts inland more in the range
of 0.30-0.75". Windy conditions are also expected for Bethel with
sustained winds 20-30 mph with gusts as high as 35-40 mph tonight
through Wednesday night.

Persistent southerly flow of 25 to 35 kts or 30 to 40 mph towards
the Kuskokwim Delta Coastline tonight through Thursday morning
will lead to potential minor coastal flooding. Therefore, a High
Surf Advisory has been issued with this forecast package. Expect
water to rise 1 to 2 feet above the highest astronomical tide with
waves on top of the rise in water. As the front pushes inland
Thursday morning, the southerly flow will ease ending the flooding
threat.

Elsewhere across Southwest, expect generally dry conditions
through Wednesday night with the potential for an isolated shower
especially for the western Alaska Range and the Kilbuck/Kuskokwim
Mountains. Rain showers become more much more widespread Thursday
with a steadier rain (especially for the Middle Kuskokwim Valley
on Friday) as moisture moves over the Kilbuck/Kuskokwim Mountains
and the front begins slowly moving eastward again.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Friday afternoon)...

A gale force frontal system continues moving across the Bering
tonight slowing down and even stalling after it passes through the
Pribilof Islands Wednesday evening. As a result, expect continued
unsettled weather for the Pribilofs with small craft conditions
(~25-30 kt winds), rain showers, and areas of fog. Winds ease
Wednesday night as the front pushes off to the east, though, low
stratus and areas of fog will remain a threat. With the stalling
of the front, expect rainy and windy conditions for Eastern
Aleutian Chain to the southern AKPen through the forecast period.
Also, expect the usual funneled winds (~30-35 kts) through bays
and passes tonight through Wednesday night as the front moves
through while weakening. For the Western and Central Aleutians
Islands and from the Pribilofs Islands west, expect generally
westerly flow and quiet conditions with just the usual low stratus
and areas of fog for Wednesday and Thursday.

Another storm system moves across the North Pacific towards the
Western Aleutians on Friday bringing more unsettled conditions
with increasing winds. However, there is uncertainty with this
system, therefore, stay tuned for the latest updates as wind
speeds may be increased in subsequent updates.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

A West Bering low moves to the Central Bering Saturday, then
shifts to the Bering Strait Sunday. Its front extends through the
Central Bering by Sunday. Increasing gusty winds along the front
become gale force from the North Central Bering to the Bering
Strait by Sunday. High pressure over the Gulf weakens with
generally light winds. Forecast confidence is good.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7:Friday through Tuesday)...

Model guidance in the long term is performing poorly, so not much
can be gleaned and confidence is not high. Generally long wave
troughing is expected to be present over the Bering and Southwest
Alaska, so we can anticipate active weather there. Considerable
disagreement exists over Southcentral, where guidance is out of
phase completely starting this weekend. We will be utilizing WPC
forecasts for the longterm to as the consensus model solution that
we coordinated with them seems to be the way to go. So not more
than a general feel for the weather picture in the long term with
low confidence over the weekend into early next week.
