Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

In the upper levels, southern Alaska is essentially split between
a longwave positively tilted trough over the western Bering, and
upper level ridging over the Yukon and the Panhandle this
afternoon. For Southcentral, the area is far enough from the
trough over the Bering that the weather is quiet and steady state,
with quite a bit of sunshine for most areas.

The weather is very different across Southwest Alaska as the first
in a pair of upper level disturbances and associated surface
fronts crosses the region today. Steady rain is ongoing pretty
much everywhere from New Stuyahok and Koliganek west. The upper
level wave is moving a bit east of due north, so its associated
rain is not going to cross the Alaska Range into Southcentral.

A second, stronger wave is moving northeastward across the
Central Aleutians, and will be the cause of another round of rain,
but this time for nearly all of Southern Alaska on Monday and
into Monday night.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models are in very good agreement through Tuesday afternoon on
the large-scale. The primary point of disagreement will be how
much precipitation is seen across the Cook Inlet region Monday
afternoon and into Monday night. The downslope-happy NAM continues
to show very little rain, meanwhile most of the other models
depict considerably more. Given even the NAM shows that there is
deep layer southwesterly flow from mountain top through at least
500 mb throughout this time frame, it looks probable that the
moisture will overcome any weak downsloping, and the wetter
solutions were preferred for this forecast package. Overall
forecast confidence is high.

&&

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist through Monday
morning. On Monday afternoon, cloud cover and rain are likely to
return, eventually causing ceilings to fall to MVFR. The Turnagain
Arm wind is expected to return to south and west Anchorage
sometime Monday evening, but timing is highly uncertain at this
time. While not frequently simultaneous, the pattern is a good
set-up for both rain and gusty winds to impact the terminal at the
same time.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Wednesday evening)...

With the exception of lingering clouds from this morning, mostly
sunny skies and warm, dry conditions prevailed for the 4th of July
across the southern mainland under a ridge of high pressure
aloft. Meanwhile, a stratus cloud deck trapped underneath the
ridge has completely blanketed most of the north gulf coast, with
some partial clearing in the Kenai Peninsula and western Prince
William Sound. The stratus clouds will return again this evening
with areas of fog for the Cordova region late tonight night and
Sunday morning. Additionally, sea breezes are expected in the
typical local effect areas for Monday afternoon.

A quick turnaround in the weather pattern will get underway
beginning on Monday as a broad longwave trough over the Bering
Sea will shift over the eastern half of the interior. Upper level
waves rotating on the eastern edge of this trough coupled with
moist southwesterly flow will bring increasing clouds, cooler
temperatures and periods of steady rain through the middle of next
week. Much of the forecast area will likely see rain, with the
bulk of moisture and precipitation concentrated along the eastern
Kenai Peninsula, Prince William Sound, and northern half of
Susitna Valley. Moreover, southeasterly gap winds will develop
Monday evening through early Tuesday afternoon along Turnagain
Arm, Knik River Valley, and the Copper River Valley. Cool, wet,
and rainy conditions will continue this week as the longwave
trough progresses eastward and holds firmly in place over the
mainland with small breaks in between.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: tonight
through Tuesday night)...

Multiple shortwaves continue to push bands of energy across
Southwest Alaska over the next few days. Therefore, expect rain,
rain, and more rain through mid-week across the Southwest
Mainland and the AKPen. Overall, rain showers will be light,
aside from a brief period late tonight where moderate-to-heavy
rain showers moves across the Kuskokwim Valley. Flow remains
southerly through the forecast period. Winds are not expect to be
excessively strong but not particularly light either. Brief
periods of patchy fog are possible along the immediate southwest
coast with persistent onshore flow. Elsewhere will see low cloud
ceilings through mid- week.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
tonight through Tuesday night)...

Flow is primarily westerly throughout the next few days as a
couple of surface lows and a series of associated fronts and waves
move across the Bering. Initially, winds will remain generally
below about 20 kts, before quickly increasing to small craft by
late tonight and becoming more widespread by Tuesday morning.
Widespread light rainfall moves across the Bering through early
tomorrow morning, with heavier bouts at times. Additionally,
expect the usual low stratus deck as well as periods of patchy fog

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Saturday through Monday)...

Bering/Aleutians:

Forecast confidence remains poor for Wednesday as guidance shows
differences in placement and intensity of a low pressure system
moving eastward across the Bering. This low is likely to produce
areas of gale force winds in the southern Bering Sea on Wednesday.
Otherwise, winds will remain below gale force with no high seas
expected.

Gulf of Alaska:

Forecast confidence remains very low at this time as guidance
shows large differences in solutions with respect to the placement
and intensity of a low moving eastward across the Gulf. Winds may
reach gale force at times on Friday, especially in areas prone to
funneling easterlies. No high seas are expected.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Thursday through Sunday)...

The pattern will be amplified with upper level ridging expected
to extend across the Bering/Aleutians while upper level troughing
will generally remain over Southcentral and Southwest Alaska. This
will result in cooler temperatures and more cloud cover over
Southcentral and Southwest. The aforementioned upper level trough
will gradually weaken through the extended period which will allow
temperatures to gradually rebound. Surface low pressure will move
near Kodiak Island on Saturday bringing rain and showers to
Kodiak and the southern Kenai Peninsula. This low is also expected
to interact with a coastal ridge and potentially bring Turnagain
Arm winds to the Anchorage Bowl Saturday and Sunday. The pattern
will remain benign for the Bering/Aleutians. The main weather
concern for the Bering/Aleutians will be areas of fog and low
stratus in the extended period.
