Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A long-wave trough remains in place across most of the Alaska
region, with a ridge over the northeastern portion of the state.
One of three distinct cut-off lows is nearly stationary near the
south end of Kodiak Island. Short-waves rotating around this low
are tracking from the Gulf of Alaska, westward across the Kenai
Peninsula and over to Bristol Bay. This is leading to clouds and
areas of light rain. Meanwhile, impulses on the south side of the
upper level ridge are tracking westward from the Yukon across the
Copper River Basin and Susitna Valley. Warm air advection through
this area is leading to development of a trough and axis of higher
instability. Thus, this is the primary area for diurnally driven
showers and thunderstorms today.

Out west, weather is currently quiet across the Bering Sea and
Aleutians. While there are some breaks in clouds in the eastern
Bering and along the Alaska Peninsula, much of the region is
shrouded in low clouds. Satellite imagery shows a deepening low
over the northwest Pacific, tracking northeastward toward the
western Aleutians. This will be the primary weather-maker out
west the next couple days.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
As would be expected in this pattern, there are minor differences
in the details of short-waves crossing the southern mainland
through Saturday night. To complicate matters, it looks like
the strongest trough moving up from the Gulf will arrive in
Southcentral in time to interact with convection which forms
inland this afternoon and evening, resulting in a tricky
precipitation forecast. Also, model precipitation fields are
all over the place with areal distribution and amount of rainfall
over Southcentral tonight. Thus, forecast confidence in the
precipitation forecast is generally low, though have some skill
to identify areas where rain is most likely.

Otherwise, models remain in good agreement with handling of the
gale force low along the Aleutians this weekend and gale force
low moving into the Gulf on Sunday.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Easterly flow will generally maintain VFR ceilings, despite
a series of upper level waves passing overhead through Saturday
afternoon. The strongest of the upper level waves may lead to some
light rain between 15Z and 21Z Saturday, at which time ceilings
could briefly drop below 5000 feet.

The biggest forecast challenge remains the Turnagain Arm winds.
The coastal surface ridge and associated Turnagain Arm jet are
fairly weak today. However, with a bit of sunshine and warmer
temperatures over the Susitna Valley, expect some gusty
southeasterly winds to move into the terminal this afternoon and
evening. The ridge and Turnagain jet will strengthen on Saturday
and despite cloud cover, passage of the upper level trough
mentioned above will help winds move into the airport. Thus,
there is high confidence in stronger southeast winds moving in
during the day Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...This
afternoon through Mon)...

A complex low pressure system over the Gulf will push north across
the Gulf tonight which will bring rain to Kodiak Island and
parts of the Kenai Peninsula. While most of Southcentral will see
cloudy conditions this evening, an easterly wave moving out of
the Yukon will help initiate a few showers over the high terrain
of the Talkeetnas and Wrangell Mountains, with afternoon heating
there is a chance of isolated thunderstorms in this same area
through the evening hours. Tonight as shortwave energy moves
inland expect showers to evolve into an area of rain from the
Talkeetnas and Matanuska Valley moving eastward towards the
Susitna Valley overnight and into Saturday. For the Anchorage area
expect mainly cloudy skies with a sprinkle or shower possible on
Saturday as the main shortwave passes overhead. Showers will
develop east of the Talkeetnas Saturday afternoon where there may
be some sunshine, but models are showing a bit more stable airmass
so have trimmed back the area of thunderstorms across the eastern
Copper River Basin. Confidence is low that thunderstorms will
even occur due to cloud cover and slightly more stable conditions.
By Saturday evening this shortwave will exit to the west with a
brief dry period for most of Southcentral. However Saturday night
and Sunday a low pressure system and front will move across the
Gulf and bring a swath of rain from Kodiak Island and north across
Prince William Sound and the Coastal Mountains. Most valley
locations north of the coastal mountains will remain dry with a
few sprinkles possible but cross barrier flow will keep Anchorage
and the MAT valley mostly dry. As we head into Monday models are
in better agreement with the low tracking south of Prince William
Sound and into the northeast Gulf, this will keep most of the rain
across eastern Prince William Sound and the Copper River Basin.

As for winds expect the Turnagain winds and Copper River winds to
increase on Saturday as the pressure gradient increases.
Additionally, as the front moves north across the Gulf on Sunday
increased winds across the northern and western Gulf as the
barrier jet develops. Also increased winds across Cook Inlet and
Shelikof Strait as winds funnel through those areas in response to
the low pressure moving across the western Gulf.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Southwest Alaska remains under unsettled weather with showers
moving through the Bristol Bay area. Tomorrow, this unsettled
state will continue when an upper level trough rotates from east
to west through the area, which is expected to fire isolated
thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, mainly in the Lower
Kuskokwim River Valley. A chance of showers then continues through
Monday. Little change was made to the forecast today as models are
consistent. The area of thunderstorm coverage tomorrow was
refined as indices favorable for thunderstorm develop have really
honed in on the Kuskokwim River. Some minor tweaks may be needed,
but this should be what to expect. Another item of note is a band
of higher wind expected this weekend in Bristol Bay specifically
near King Salmon with winds maxing around 20 kts. This is due to
the lower pressure in the area. High confidence going through the
weekend as forecasts have been performing well.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

Generally quiet weather exists over the Bering and Aleutians, with
typical sea stratus/fog moving about. Two areas of low pressure
are expected to impact the region this weekend. The bigger of the
two is a low moving into the Western Bering Saturday. This low has
a forecasted gale force winds and rain associated with it. It will
move quite slowly east Through Monday. The second is a weak low
that will be present in Bristol Bay Saturday and will be attached
to a low moving up the Western Gulf. Expect a quick exit Sunday
and Small Craft Advisory winds. Models have been consistent with
the weather in the Bering, so not much change to the forecast
today. Confidence is high for the short term.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5/Monday through Wednesday)...

Expect an abnormally stormy period for this time of year, with
multiple lows transiting the Aleutians/North Pacific and Gulf of
Alaska. A low along the Western Aleutians on Monday will be in a
weakening state, with sub-gale force winds. A second low looks to
track near the Alaska Peninsula Tuesday, potentially causing some
gusty gap winds on the western side of the Alaska Peninsula and
into Bristol Bay. A much larger and stronger low looks like it
will make its way out of the Pacific Tuesday night. Forecast
confidence in track and strength of this system is low. It could
end up anywhere from the Alaska Peninsula and eastern Bering to
the Gulf of Alaska. Based on the latest guidance, the Gulf track
is preferred. As far as strength, gale force winds look likely and
may end up being widespread along the low track.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Tuesday through Friday)...

An amplified Rossby Wave Pattern is expected for the extended
period with a deepening of the Aleutian Low and an upper level
ridge extending northward across the eastern Gulf and Southeast
Alaska. The orientation of these Rossby Waves will allow for
ample moisture to move into the region. Prevailing onshore flow
will allow for more clouds than sun, cooler temperatures, higher
relative humidity and a greater chance of precipitation. The
onshore flow will also allow any potential convection to be
confined to the Alaska Range and Talkeetna Mountains.

Synoptically, a series of easterly upper level waves will move
through the area during this period. This will bring a continuous
chance of rain and showers across Southcentral and Southwest
Alaska. Areas expected to get the most rain are located on the
windward side (side facing the Gulf) of the mountains and areas
with the lowest chance for precipitation are located on the
leeward side of the mountains. Ensemble guidance shows precipitable
water normalized anomalies to be at least 1-2 standard deviations
higher than the mean. This means the atmosphere will have a
higher moisture content than normal. Out west, a deep Aleutian Low
will remain over the eastern Aleutians. This low will bring strong
southeasterly gap winds to the eastern Aleutians and Alaska
Peninsula on Thursday. Widespread stratocumulus with light rain
showers will continue across the western Bering on the backside
of the Aleutian Low.
