.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Starting over the Bering a low pressure system northeast of St
Paul Island is trekking southwest towards the Aleutians this will
produce showers out across the open water. Another low south of
Cold Bay is producing small craft winds across eastern Aleutians
and a few showers. Finally, several shortwaves are moving from
the North Pacific into the Gulf these features will continue to
bring rain into coastal areas of the Gulf occasionally pushing
showers inland, however no significant impacts with these
shortwaves. Radar currently showing rain moving towards Cordova
and Prince William Sound. Observations show rain at Kodiak City
and across the Aleutians.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Model solutions continue to remain in good synoptic agreement
through the short term. The main forecast challenge is the timing
of several upper level waves lifting inland over Southcentral
through Tuesday morning. Another forecast challenge will be
timing the onset of the Turnagain, Knik and Copper River winds
through the short term.

PANC...VFR conditions through the period with a few showers later
today. Southeasterly Turnagain Arm winds will increase this
afternoon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Memorial Day through Wednesday)...

Today starts with a continuation of a brief break in the weather.
However, by this afternoon the next wave of energy moves in from
the Gulf, providing more rain for Southcentral. This next trough
is observed well on satellite and RADAR is showing the leading
edge of precipitation approaching the coast, so the forecast is on
track. A weak barrier jet will also setup tonight with this trough
and Turnagain Arm winds make a reappearance as a result. Some
adjustments to the forecast over the past day reflect more
precipitation as this trough looks like it will be able to push
inland and provide more precipitation than initially thought. That
coupled with rainfall amounts outperforming models led to this change.
Looking ahead, low pressure in the gulf and a general maritime
influence can be expected for the rest of the week. This means
sustained cooler temperatures with cloudy conditions and rainshowers.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today
through Tuesday night)...

A short lull in the weather will be the main story across most of
the Southwest for this Memorial Day. As weak ridging attempts to
build in from the north, prevailing winds will slowly turn back
northeasterly by this afternoon. This return to offshore winds
will advect a notably warmer low level air mass into interior
Southwest in the process, pushing high temperatures back into the
60s and 70s for most inland, low level locations. Areas of
sunshine will also likely poke out today, with breaks already
evident in both upper and low level cloud decks currently in
place.

By Tuesday, a North Pacific low will send another front across the
Southwest from southeast to northwest, bringing another round of
showers and increasing cloud cover back across as it moves along.
The Y-K Delta may escape with a warmer and perhaps even sunny
morning, but more vigorous showers will fire off along the
Kuskokwim Mountains by the afternoon. Depending on the degree of
warming with breaks in cloud cover, there may be enough low level
instability to fuel a couple thunderstorms, primarily along and
just west of the Kuskokwim Mountains. While this activity will
tend to weaken as it moves off the mountains towards the west
during the evening hours, gusty winds enhanced by convective
downdrafts and rain-cooled air could make it well west of the
Kuskokwim slopes. This could lead to a rapid shift and spike in
winds as the outflow moves northwest, with southerly gusts up to
30 MPH possible as the boundary rushes across the Kuskokwim Delta
on Tuesday evening. Otherwise, expect cool and showery conditions
to continue across much of the area through Tuesday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2:
Today through Tuesday night)...

An upper level low will continue to drift towards the southwest across
the Bering over the next couple days. The main impact from this
low will be from areas of showers and low stratus following the
low center. Winds near the sea surface with this system will be
weak, with much of the Bering dominated by winds lower than small
crafts through tomorrow evening. Meanwhile, another low and
associated front drifting across the North Pacific will bring
areas of rain and easterly small craft winds along and south of
the Eastern Aleutians today. These winds will rapidly diminish by
tonight and into Tuesday as the aforementioned low weakens and
drifts into the southern Gulf by late Tuesday night.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Wednesday through Friday)

A North Pacific low will move south of the Aleutians and into the
Gulf of Alaska from Thursday to Friday. There is model uncertainty
of the potential for gale force winds on the south side of the
low, but will have minimal impact in the forecast areas.
Otherwise, expect winds less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft
over the Bering and the Gulf for the Day 3 through 5 period.

.LONG TERM (Days 4 through 7: Thursday through Sunday)...

Broad low pressure will encompass much of the state by the end of
the week. A weak surface low over the Interior will transport some
cooler air over Southern Alaska over the weekend. When combined
with moisture being advected onshore via a separate low stalling
over the Bering Strait, persistent rain showers across the
interior portions of the Southern Mainland are probable.

Another vertically stacked low moves just south of the Gulf
towards Southeast Alaska over the four day period. It's front will
track across the Gulf, transporting a decent amount of moisture to
the Gulf and the Southcentral coastal regions. Coastal areas, as
well as Kodiak Island, will likely see rather persistent rain
showers towards the end of the week and through the weekend.
