Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

High pressure is over Southcentral Alaska with just a little wispy
cirrus clouds riding over the ridge axis. Satellite shows a small
but tightly wound low over northern Norton Sound which is keeping
the southwest flow over Southwest Alaska. This is keeping
conditions conducive for stratus over Bristol Bay and the
Kuskokwim Delta.

A stronger low is located south of Unalaska this afternoon. This
low and its associated weather front will move into the Gulf of
Alaska tomorrow. This will bring a change in the weather for the
area.

The atmosphere is convectively stable over most of the region with
just the northern Susitna Valley and Copper River Basin able to
support showers. There is not enough instability for thunderstorms
in either of these areas.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good agreement into late this week. While they are
in good agreement, the front moving into the Gulf tomorrow night
does seem to be moving a little faster than it looked previously
so forecasts have been adjusted for this.

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions will persist. Southeasterly Turnagain Arm
winds will move over the airport late Wednesday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tuesday afternoon through Friday afternoon)...

Another beautiful evening is expected across Southcentral tonight.
Attention then quickly shifts to an incoming front over Kodiak
Island Wednesday morning. Gusty southeasterly winds and rain will
spread in and lift northward Wednesday evening as the front
tracks inland. In response, southeasterly winds are expected to
increase beginning Wednesday afternoon through Turnagain Arm and
the Knik River Valley. Perhaps the biggest change in this
forecast package has been the increase in easterly winds over the
northern Gulf, especially across the Barren Islands, Kamishak
Bay, and Shelikof Strait as storm force easterly winds are
expected across these areas Thursday morning. Meanwhile,
precipitation will fill in across the northern Gulf coast with
coastal locations receiving the greatest amounts of rain. Farther
inland Southcentral locations will remain overcast with a possible
sprinkle, however given the southeasterly flow, this is a
favorable pattern for Anchorage Bowl and the western Kenai
Peninsula to be downsloped. Therefore, expect the bulk of
precipitation to remain along the coast. Similar conditions can be
expected for Friday as the parent low tracks eastward into the
Gulf.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...Wed
through Fri)...

After a couple days of onshore flow resulting in stratus and fog,
we are starting to see the pattern transitioning. The remnants of
a strong front from the North Pacific are slowly tracking towards
the Alaska Peninsula. Meanwhile, a vigorous upper level wave is
diving south in the Bering. The interaction between these systems
looks much more like a Fall-type pattern with rapid
intensification and a healthy surface low as the result. This
whole complex will lift towards Bristol Bay through the day Wed
bringing rain to King Salmon by early afternoon. Gusty east to
southeast winds will accompany the initial front with some of the
gaps pushy gusts to 50 mph. For places further inland (the YK-
Delta and Lower Kuskokwim Valley), offshore flow will limit any
stratus or fog formation Wed morning. It will also help those
areas to stay dry through most of until early Thu morning.

As energy from the Bering and the North Pacific continue to phase
and evolve Thu, the system will shift further east. This will
cause rain to spread further inland and allow some of the
strongest gusts to come down just a bit. Some colder air will wrap
around this system late Thu into Fri, so expect below average
temperatures to close out the work week. Then yet another potent
shortwave dives in from the Bering Strait on Fri. This system
looks to take all the remnant moisture from the larger low complex
and drive it right back over Southwest AK Fri-Sat. This could
make for a very wet day for areas from Bethel south to Port
Heiden, but there are some massive model differences regarding
this evolution, so we will have to monitor it.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2...Wed
through Fri)...

The Bering will be mostly influenced by a broad,
complex area of low pressure developing near the Eastern
Aleutians/Alaska Peninsula Wed. This will bring increasing winds
and categorical chances for rain from Dutch Harbor through the
Alaska Peninsula. For the Western Bering/Aleutians, northeast flow
and some ridging will continue to keep things relatively benign.
By late Thu, a developing shortwave will cross the Northern Bering
near St Matthew Island. This could bring a brief period of rain,
but nothing like the afore-mentioned larger low that parks near
Sand Point. The system from St Matthew will slide inland and leave
much of the Central Bering under quieter conditions for Fri.
Meanwhile, the Western Aleutians will see several more waves bring
rain and gusty south winds back to the area to end the week.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

The remnants of a gale force barrier jet along the north Gulf
coast will diminish during the day Friday. A weak low transiting
from near the Alaska Peninsula to the Gulf of Alaska Friday night
and Saturday could strengthen a bit, but that is highly uncertain.
Thus, there is a chance winds will come back up along the north
Gulf coast during the day Saturday, but for now will stick with
the more likely weaker wind forecast.

There is much better agreement on the next Pacific low tracking
to the Aleutians Saturday and remaining there through Sunday, with
an associated front spreading north and east across the Bering
Sea. There is still some question of strength, with small craft
winds likely and a chance of gale force winds ahead of the front.
This would most likely occur over the central Aleutians and
central Bering Sea.

.Long Term Forecast (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through Tuesday)...

The weekend will start with a closed low over the Gulf with a
trough extending northward across much of the southern mainland.
This generally supports a cloudy and showery pattern, with rain
steady rain along the north Gulf coast. However, the upper trough
will shift eastward through the weekend with drying and warming
from west to east across the southern mainland as a high amplitude
ridge builds approaches from the Bering Sea. Over the Gulf, any
remaining winds from the surface low will diminish Saturday.
Models diverge significantly on where the high amplitude ridge
ultimately moves, though ensemble guidance supports at least some
impact on the southern mainland. As a result, warming temperatures
are likely early next week. All of the solutions indicate pretty
benign weather, so would expect mostly dry conditions and abundant
sunshine.

Meanwhile, models have converged on a common solution for the next
low out west, with a low tracking along the Aleutians Saturday
through Sunday. An associated front will spread north and east
across the Bering Sea. Still not sure how deep this low will be,
and whether maximum winds will reach gale force or not. In any
case, it looks like this low will exit to the North Pacific early
next week, with improving conditions across the Bering and
Aleutians. Some solutions do linger the low south of the Alaska
Peninsula, where wind and rain could linger a little longer.
