Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The longwave pattern features broad troughing. On satellite
imagery there is an occlusion over Cook Inlet, across Prince
William Sound extending into the Yukon Territory. There is a
second occluded front over the Western Aleutians. There is a jet
core south of Attu Island with a magnitude of 135 knots. The
radars at King Salmon (PAKC), Kenai (PAHG) and Middleton Island
(PAIH) have been active overnight and early this morning. On
ASCAT (Advanced Scatterometer) gale force winds were detected
southeast of Cordova and Kayak Island.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

For initialization purposes compared ASCAT (Advanced
Scatterometer) imagery to the models, and again the models are
off to a good start. Models continue to be in sync depicting the
general synoptic pattern through 48 hours. Then model divergence
emerges over the NW Pacific and Gulf Of Alaska.

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions anticipated for most of the TAF period. With
the front moving across Southcentral the cigs may drop below 5,000
feet. The Kenai radar has detected showers over Cook Inlet and the
radar is actively being monitored. Gusty winds will materialize
again later today...peak...and diminish in the late evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The low that has been talked about the past few days is near
Middleton Island early this morning and heading northwest into
Prince William Sound. This low is weakening as it moves toward
the land but the front moving through Southcentral overnight has
brought some light rain to inland areas, heavier rain to coastal
areas, and some snowfall to higher elevations such as Chickaloon
Pass.

One uncertainty for this afternoon is how strong the winds will be
in Passage Canal and Turnagain Arm. This pattern is one that often
produces a period of a few hours of much stronger winds than
models suggest. The one thing going against this is the speed the
low is weakening. However, the pressure rises behind this low will
likely bring a short period of gustier winds for the eastern
Kenai Peninsula.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Moist southeasterly flow this morning will continue to bring
widespread rain showers to much of Southwest Alaska, especially
the Middle Kuskokwim Valley as some moisture makes it over the
Alaska Range. Rain shower activity is expected to gradually
diminish through the afternoon and evening hours as higher
pressure builds into the area. Any residual rain showers from this
afternoon through Wednesday evening will be mainly confined to
the higher terrain namely the Kuskokwim Mountains and the Western
Alaska Range. Valley locations across much of Southwest are
expected to remain mostly dry this evening through Wednesday
evening, though, there could be a stray/isolated shower still not
lasting too long though if one were to occur. Temperatures will
be mainly in the upper 40s to low 50s across much of Southwest
today with warming temperatures on Wednesday with mid to upper 50s
for the interior locations maybe almost 60 degrees for Sleetmute
and surrounding areas with upper 40s to low 50s near the coast.
There also could be some patchy fog across areas of Southwest for
early to mid Wednesday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

The main story for the Bering Sea and Aleutians will be a frontal
system that will continue to impact the Western Aleutian Islands
and western Bering this morning. Expect periods of rain and gusty
winds mainly upwards of small crafts as this front moves through
this morning. The associated low pressure center is expected to
pass over or near Shemya tonight into Wednesday morning before
moving into the central Bering for Thursday morning. The front
associated with this low will continue moving to the east
reaching Dutch Harbor by Wednesday afternoon and then the
Pribilofs by Wednesday evening with rain showers and small craft
winds.

Another piece of upper level energy is expected to ride north
along this front Wednesday evening/night that will help to
reinvigorate the front and supply more moisture to the front
bringing a period of heavier rain from Dutch Harbor east Thursday
morning onward.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

Bering: A broad complex low will be in place over the Bering
through Saturday. Southeasterly gale force winds are likely across
the eastern Bering on Thursday. Westerly gales are likely just
south of the Aleutian Chain Friday as the low center moves into
the eastern Bering for Saturday.

Gulf of Alaska: There is increasing confidence a gale force front
will enter the western Bering Thursday morning. Gusty southeasterly
winds are likely through the usual places including the Barren
Islands, Shelikof Strait, and Kamishak Bay Thursday into Friday.
Gusty conditions are expected to taper by Saturday as the front
lifts inland.

.Long Term Forecast (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

The key feature in the long term is a broad upper level low
centered over the Bering with several upper level waves lifting
inland. This will keep a generally unsettled pattern across the
southern half of the state through the weekend. The leading front
associated with this large low will lift inland over Southcentral
Friday into Saturday. As the low center continues to drift over
the eastern Aleutians late Saturday, rain and gusty winds can be
expected across much of the Chain and the southern Alaska
Peninsula. Showers will also spread across Southwest through
Sunday afternoon as the low tracks into the Gulf for the early
part of next week. In the wake of the low, conditions will improve
over the Bering as a ridge of high pressure builds early Monday.
Cloud cover and scattered showers may remain across Southcentral
through Monday as residual upper level waves propagate inland.
