Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level low over the western Bering/Aleutians continues to
move northeastward. This low is beginning to weaken as the center
of cyclonic circulation is now displaced farther from the core of
the jet compared to 24 hours ago. This means that the synoptic
scale forcing for cyclonic motion is weakening and thus allowing
the low to begin to gradually weaken. An upper level ridge has
become more pronounced compared to 24 hours ago as the ridge now
extends from the central North Pacific through the western North
Slope. The overall Rossby Wave pattern has become more amplified
compared to the past 24 hours as the Pacific North American
Pattern (PNA) strengthened in the negative phase. A second upper
level low in the southeastern Gulf continues to move
southeastward. The jetstream currently extends northeastward from
the tropical west Pacific through the Seward Peninsula. The
jetstream then extends southeastward from the Seward Peninsula
through northern Washington State/southern British Columbia.

Closer to the surface, observations show blizzard conditions in
the western Kuskokwim Delta, especially in coastal locations.
Farther inland, observations show lighter winds and less
restricted visibility.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Guidance remains in good agremeent with the placement and
intensity of synoptic scale features at both the surface and the
upper levels. Due to the high degree of continuity, forecast
confidence remains high at this time.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds persist through 02z.
Ceilings will fall to 3500ft around 02z with light snow developing
and reducing visibility. Southeasterly winds at 10-15kts will gust
to 20-25kts at times beginning at 02z.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A front will sweep into Southcentral Alaska from the west today
and bring in a surprisingly tricky forecast. This front is moving
slightly faster that it looked yesterday so snowfall may begin in
Anchorage late this afternoon instead of this evening. That also
means the front will moves over Anchorage sooner so snow should
end in the early morning hours Monday. Easterly Turnagain Arm
winds will be blowing overnight tonight but won't make it into the
Anchorage Bowl until the front passes through. A number of the
forecast models are keeping the snow going for a few more hours as
these gusty southeast winds move into town, but that would be
very unusual, so am going with snow ending as with SE winds kick
in. Winds will switch to the South over Cook Inlet during the day
on Monday and remain gusty. The uncertainty here is how warn the
air will be moving up the Inlet. There are large differences in
models with how warm the air will be with some expecting
temperatures in Kenai and Anchorage to be into the lower 40s.
Others just have mid 30s. Ended up with most areas in the upper
30s to 40, but there is a chance they could warm into the lower to
even mid 40s along Cook Inlet tomorrow.

Snow will be more persistent the farther north one goes this
afternoon into Tuesday. Temperatures will also be cooler and
precipitation type is expected to be all snow in the Mat-Su
valleys. Palmer and Wasilla are right on the edge of things, so
while it looks like they will get snow through early Monday
morning and then it will end, it could linger there longer.
Hatcher Pass is ideally situated with this set up to get
persistent snow tonight into Tuesday and two feet or more of snow
is possible there tonight through Monday night.

Winds will increase from the south along the Copper River tonight
and bring those gusty winds into Glennallen overnight. This should
help keep their temperatures a but warmer than last night as well
as downslope out and precipitation at the lower elevations of the
Copper River Basin.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

The front associated with a strong storm system over the western
Bering is moving onshore the Kuskokwim Delta Coast this morning.
High clouds are spreading inland across the Middle Kuskokwim
Valley and Bristol Bay as the front continues moving eastward. One
quarter mile visibility and heavy snow is currently being
observed along the Kuskokwim Delta Coast from Toksook Bay to
Hooper Bay this morning. These conditions are expected to continue
along the coastline this morning as well as spread inland. A
Blizzard Warning is in effect for the Kuskokwim Delta Coast
through this afternoon for one quarter mile visibility in blowing
snow. Temperatures are expected to slowly rise throughout the day
reaching near to slightly above freezing late this afternoon. Snow
may mix with rain for the Kuskokwim Delta Coast late this
afternoon into this evening as warmer air moves in through a
deeper layer of the atmosphere. A general 4 to 8 inches with
locally up to 10 inches is expected across the Kuskokwim Delta.
There will be a prolonged period of deep southwesterly flow aimed
at the Kuskokwim Delta Coast to Bristol Bay today through Monday
afternoon. However, think there is enough sea ice to help keep any
coastal flooding at a minimum.

Current thinking is that the Middle Kuskokwim Valley will remain
all snow for this event with any rain/snow mix remaining south
over Bristol Bay. However, enough warm air is expected to move in
to change King Salmon over to all rain for a time this evening
through Monday morning.

With the center of the low pressure moving northward towards Nome,
this will keep a fairly moist southwest flow which will keep snow
in the forecast through the forecast period for much of Southwest.
Steadier light snow for the Kuskokwim Delta with more showery
activity east of the Kuskokwim Mountains as this area will be
further away from the main source of energy.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

The well-advertised storm force Bering low is here. Widespread
gale force winds are expected across much of the Bering today with
storm force winds for the southwestern Bering Sea. Wave heights up
to 30 feet are expected on the Pacific side of the Aleutian Island
Chain with waves up to 29 feet in the Bering. The front associated
with this system will continue moving eastward through the
Aleutian Island Chain this morning with some rain showers from
Dutch Harbor this morning to Cold Bay and Sand Point by this
afternoon.

A piece of upper level energy is expected to round the back side
of this low Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon/evening
that is expected to bring snow showers and gusty northwesterly
winds to the Eastern Aleutians and AKPEN.

Lastly, another gale force storm system with mild air is expected
to move across the western Bering Tuesday evening into Wednesday
with more unsettled weather and gusty winds for the Aleutian
Island Chain.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Tuesday through Thursday)...

Gulf of Alaska: A low moves over the North Gulf Coast while its
front moves across the Gulf by Thu. Forecast confidence starts
high, but decreases by Thu. Widespread southwesterly small craft
winds and waves move across the Southern Gulf, with small craft
gap winds through Shelikof Strait and Cook Inlet, both diminishing
Tue. After the front passes, small craft winds spread over the
Gulf through Thu. The track of a low coming into the Gulf is
uncertain, but gale force winds look probable for Thu.

Bering: A well developed Norton Sound low continues its track
onshore of western Alaska on Tue. Cold air advection behind this
low, leads to bands of gale force winds tracking down across the
central Bering and Aleutians, along with freezing spray. Forecast
confidence drops Wed through Thu with systems tracking from the
northwest Pacific, then eastward across the Aleutians and Bering
Sea. Generally increasing westerlies, with potential for gale
force winds.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Tuesday Night through
Saturday)...

The upper-level low over western Alaska will weaken and open into
trough as its north/south axis moves east, bisecting the state. As
it does, a shortwave developing at the base of this trough will
lift northeast along the AKPEN and over the north Gulf coast by
late Tuesday / early Wednesday. This feature will spin up a
surface low near Middleton Island, spreading rain and snow across
the immediate Southcentral Coast. The eastward progression of the
main trough, though, looks to kick this system to the eastern Gulf
by late Wednesday. The main trough, however, will remain
negatively tilted over Southcentral, allowing colder air to filter
in along with lingering snow showers, especially for upslope
areas along the western facing mountain ranges. The trough shows
signs of weakening by Thursday; however, a second, potent
shortwave looks to drop southeast from the Bering, re-
establishing the negatively-tilted trough over much of the
Southern Mainland. This feature will spin up yet another gulf low
for Thursday with precipitation along the coast and Copper River
Basin. As both the surface low and trough drift east, colder air
will advect back across Southcentral with northerly gaps winds
once again ramping up.

ICE OVER THE KUSKOKWIM DELTA COAST AND BRISTOL BAY COAST WEST OF
TOGIAK...

A strong winter storm moving through the Bering Sea is expected to
push water up through fissures and leads in the sea ice along the
Southwest coastline from Togiak to Cape Romanzof today and
Monday. The storm will also break up the sea ice near the edge and
possibly push loose sea ice onshore.

Strong south to southwest winds have moved into the Bering Sea,
and storm surge associated with the low will push under the sea
ice through Monday.

Residents should be cautious if venturing out on the ice or along
