.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The large scale pattern is quickly becoming more zonal across
nearly the entire region this morning. The remnants of a front
that led to blizzard conditions earlier on Wednesday across parts
of the Kuskokwim Delta have now moved inland over the Southwest
where snow continues to fall. The heaviest snow with this activity
is now mainly located in the Bristol Bay area. The trailing
portion of the weakening front is now sprawled out on a west-east
axis over the southern Bering, roughly near the crest of a low-
amplitude ridge that spans across the entire Bering Sea. A long
band of cirrus follows the contour of the ridge as it races east
within a 160 kt jet streak core aloft. This anticyclonic jet
streak stretches all the way from the Western Aleutians to
Southeast AK, helping to support the rapidly more progressive and
zonal pattern developing across the state. Moisture is slowly on
the increase downstream of the ridge over southcentral, with
much milder temperatures largely in the 20s also persisting over
most of the Mat-Su Valleys.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Model agreement has improved significantly for several important
features over the past few cycles, and overall forecast confidence
is improving greatly through the end of the workweek. There are
still some subtle differences with the handling of several pieces
of energy working from southwest to northeast into Southcentral
tonight and Thursday. That said, the signal for moderate snowfall
across the western edges of the Alaska and Talkeetna/Chugach
Mountains is coming into better alignment for timing and amounts
from tonight through Thursday. There are also increasing concerns
for precip type problems at the low levels along the Kenai
Peninsula, Cook Inlet and perhaps part of the western Anchorage
area. Some hi-res guidance along with the NAM suggest a lee trough
over the Susitna Valley could help induce gap flow through the
Turnagain Arm during the overnight hours tonight. If this
materializes, the southeast wind could potentially lead to mixing
precipitation or very wet, slushy snow with temperatures lingering
at or above freezing at the lowest elevations of the Anchorage
Bowl through Thursday.

For the west, improving model agreement is materializing for a
new low pressure system tracking into the Bering on Friday. There
is also good agreement for significant snowfall with the strong
southwest flow developing over interior portions of Bristol Bay
near the western Alaska Range later today into tonight.

PANC...VFR conditions will continue through this evening. Snow is
expected to begin by the evening hours, intensifying some after
midnight. This will lead to MVFR to occasional IFR conditions
initially, though the snow may begin to let up some by early
Thursday morning as the more intense snow shifts more to the east
over the Chugach foothills. There is some potential for snow to
occasionally mix with rain tonight into early Thursday due to
southerly to southeasterly winds out of the Turnagain Arm. The
light southeast winds could cause temperatures to warm above
freezing during this period, but most precipitation should fall in
the form of wet snow.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2...Wed and
Thu)...
The quiet weather pattern is about to yield to another snow event
across most of Southcentral. Modest offshore flow over the past
several days has kept skies mostly clear and allowed for
impressive daily swings in high and low temperatures. The upcoming
pattern will feature fast westerly (zonal) flow. This flow is
already evident on the 12z PANC upper air sounding this morning
with 65kts at 500mb (17,000'). It will usher in moisture from SW
Alaska through the day along with some weak upper level forcing by
tonight. As these ingredients come together, expect widespread
snow accumulation to develop across nearly all of Southcentral
from west to east. A pair of Winter Weather Advisories are in
effect to address this potential.

The few intricacies to the forecast that remain difficult are the
winds across W Anchorage and what sort of precipitation type will
fall in certain areas. As the upper level westerly flow persists,
we expect a lee side trough to develop on the east side of the
Alaska Range. As this area of lower pressure establishes itself
while low level S-SW flow increases today, this could serve to
induce a moderate Turnagain Arm wind. This pattern could allow for
this wind to bend into W Anchorage. If this were to happen, there
would be potential for some warmer air to mix and allow for some
rain to mix in with the snow. It could also bring an end to our
58-day streak of temperatures of 32 degrees or colder at Ted
Stevens. Other locations across Southcentral near the coast
(Seward and Kachemak Bay) will also likely see enough warm air to
at least cause rain to mix with the snow and limit accumulations.

As the system tracks from west to east, expect a couple inches of
snow to fall over the Copper River Basin through Thu and into
early Fri. At this time, there is no strong "upstream" feature to
really move the moisture and a developing area of weak low
pressure away from the North Gulf Coast. Thus, we will be watching
to see if snow potential will linger through the end of the week
and into the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Friday evening)...

A frontal system that is currently impacting the Middle Kuskokwim
Valley and the Bristol Bay area will stall out and keep light
snow ongoing for much of the morning across the area with only
light snow accumulations expected. Another piece of upper level
energy over the Bering will move northeastward along the front
that is draped over Southwest today. This will send another surge
of moisture into Bristol Bay and the Middle Kuskokwim Valley later
this afternoon through Thursday afternoon. As a result, a Winter
Weather Advisory has been issued for Iliamna north and east for
snowfall accumulations of 6 to 12 inches with the highest amounts
near Port Alsworth and Pedro Bay. Snowfall rates may approach 0.5
to 1 inch per hour during the peak of the event. Conditions are
expected to gradually improve by Thursday midday with all
precipitation ending by Thursday afternoon.

Weak upper level ridging is expected to move into Southwest
beginning Thursday afternoon through Thursday night that will keep
most areas quiet. Some residual snow showers are possible in the
Kuskokwim Mountains and the western Alaska Range during this time
frame. Fog was left out for this time period but after a snowfall
and onshore flow from the Bering, fog is a potential Thursday
afternoon and night. Therefore, stay tuned for future updates as
fog may be added to the forecast in subsequent updates.

Another potent piece of upper level energy will move across the
northern Bering Thursday night that will bring another round of
unsettled weather mainly in the form of snow to Southwest for
Friday into Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Today through Friday evening)...

A weak elongated area of low pressure will continue moving
northeastward along a stalled frontal boundary today. This system
is currently bringing rain to Adak as well as over to the
Pribilofs. Rain is expected to continue for Adak through around
noontime today before moving off to the east and through late
afternoon today for the Pribilofs. Some colder air around the
Pribilofs especially for Saint Paul may be enough to allow for
some snow to mix in or even changeover to snow for a time this
morning through this afternoon. Any snow accumulation is expected
to be light generally on the order of around an inch or less.
From Dutch Harbor east, just a few rain/snow showers are expected
this evening through late Thursday morning.

Another gale force system is expected to enter the western Bering
Thursday morning that will bring more unsettled weather in the
form of rain and snow to the Aleutian Island Chain and the
Pribilofs. This doesn't look to be an overly moisture laden
system, therefore, not expecting heavy precipitation amounts from
this system.

Lastly, all model guidance is honing in on a stronger system to
impact the western Bering and western Aleutian Islands Friday
afternoon and into the weekend. Some snow is expected on the front
end of this system before a much warmer surge of air moves in to
change snow over to rain. This system is expected to have much
more moisture with it as well as strong winds.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

Cook Inlet/Gulf of Alaska: Expect light freezing spray in central
and southern Cook Inlet Friday and Saturday. No freezing spray in
the GOA. Wave heights in the GOA will be 10 feet or less Friday
and Saturday. Wave heights will increase on Sunday for the GOA.

Bering: Light freezing spray in portions of the northern and
Western Bering. There is sea ice around St Mathew Island and
Nunivak Island but not near the Pribilof Islands. In the
western/Central Bering wave heights will range from 17 to 10 feet
Friday. Where as east of the Pribs, the wave heights will be
below 8 feet on Friday. A new system will approach the Western
Aleutians late Saturday. Late Sat and Sunday wave heights will
rise above 20 feet north and south of the western chain.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through
Tuesday)...

There is a noticeable amount of model divergence from the Bering
to the Gulf Of Alaska. This section of the forecast package
reflects a blend of several models. There are a few items to
gleam past 96 hrs. At the onset of the forecast period, there is a
relatively amplified pattern with a trough over mainland Alaska
and ridge axis over the Central Aleutians. By Monday both the
ECMWF and the GFS have the jet becoming more zonal. Looking
upstream a major low moves over Attu and Shemya. The GFS and the
ECMWF have the surface low tracking north of St Paul early Monday.
In general, the pattern looks very unsettled for the Bering most
of this forecast period. Whereas, the Gulf Of Alaska and Prince
William Sound have a decaying system at the beginning of the
period which is replaced by a dome of high pressure.
