.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A complex longwave trough with several embedded smaller waves is
working its way east across the eastern Bering, AKPen and
Southwest this morning. The leading shortwave within this myriad
of smaller scale features is supporting a small but fairly potent
surface low moving towards the PWS over the northern Gulf. A band
of snow is moving into the North Gulf Coast ahead of the low center,
with a weak deformation band extending along the Kenai Peninsula
and up into the southern Susitna Valley. Dry air in the lowest 50
mb of the troposphere noted on the 00z ANC sounding delayed the
onset of the snow across the Anchorage area, with only flurries at
best reported up through the early hours of the morning prior to
generally light snow beginning across town. Additionally, the band
of snow has thus far not been as intense as some model guidance
indicated, suggesting potential for a lighter snowfall event than
some prior assessments to continue today.

Out west, a blanket of low stratus covers most of the Southwest
and northern AKPen, and the stratus is becoming a fog deck for
several locations early this morning. One of several
aforementioned lows/waves is crossing over the southern tip of the
AKPen near False Pass, with a surface low now forming over open
water to the south. Convective snow showers and associated open-
celled cumulus continue to track over the Bering within an
unstable marine boundary layer.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good agreement by and large for the synoptic level,
and overall forecast confidence remains good. Differences with the
track of the low entering the PWS have improved, and there is good
consensus that the low will track more or less towards the eastern
side of the sound today as it then stalls out and slowly weakens
to an inverted trough over the northern Gulf by Tuesday afternoon.
There is still the lingering question at to just how intense the
snowfall will be over the northern Kenai Peninsula and across
parts of Anchorage and the Mat Valley, with models currently broad
brushing light snow across the area for many hours on end through
at least this afternoon. Overall, the event has looked less
impressive on satellite and radar than earlier model solutions
depicted by early this morning, and snowfall amounts have been
adjusted downward accordingly for this package in expectation for
an overall more minor snowfall event continuing through this
evening.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Light snow will continue throughout the day, bringing
mainly MVFR conditions to the terminal throughout the morning.
Periods of IFR reduction to visibility are possible at times,
especially during the early morning hours with any periods of
slightly heavier snowfall. Snow will gradually let up from this
afternoon through tonight. Snow should be ending entirely by late
tonight, bringing a return to VFR visibility in the early morning
hours on Tuesday. Ceilings near MVFR range could still linger
after the snow ends into early Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today
through Tuesday Night)...

The well-advertised Gulf low and associated upper level trough
are spreading mostly light snow over much of Southcentral this
morning. The surface low evident on radar shows the low center
roughly halfway between Middleton Island and the Copper River
Delta. The models agree that this main low center will continue
tracking north and will move into the mountains around Cordova
around midday today. The upper level trough includes southeasterly
flow through the mid-levels of the atmosphere. This is drawing
some of the Gulf moisture westward into the eastern Kenai
Peninsula and Anchorage. However, the snow is quite light,
generally only accumulating at less than a quarter inch per hour
in Anchorage. Snowfall rates are likely much higher closer to the
Gulf. Winter Weather Advisories for blowing snow are in effect for
Thompson Pass and Whittier. This is the result of cold air in the
interior being drawn towards the low heading towards Prince
William Sound. This in turn is increasing the winds, and with the
falling snow, is reducing visibilities in those areas to a half
mile.

By this afternoon, the upper level trough will close off into a
cutoff low, which will track eastward across the Kenai Peninsula.
Since upper level support for surface lows is greatest ahead of
the upper low, this will draw the surface troughing and any
remnant low into western Prince William Sound. This will allow
light snow to persist into Anchorage and start up across the
Matanuska Valley later this afternoon, and very light snow or
flurries may persist into as late as Tuesday morning as the upper
level low slows to a drift and becomes vertically stacked over
Prince William Sound. Since the whole low complex will be
weakening with time, confidence is high that any accumulations
will be minor from tonight through Tuesday morning.

Additional moisture is moving into the coastal mountains and the
southern Copper River Basin, where the snow will be measured in
feet north of Cordova, with several inches likely intruding
across the Edgerton Highway and into the Wrangells. With the low
falling apart, the winds through Thompson Pass are unlikely to
increase too much farther than the 20 to 30 mph being observed
there now.

On Tuesday, another push of cold air from the interior will allow
for troughing to develop along the coast. This will increase the
winds once again through the gaps, and many areas will see lots of
sunshine as the atmosphere dries out. The quiet weather will
persist not just into Wednesday, but for the rest of the week, as
the storm track returns to an west-to-east orientation across the
southern Gulf.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Monday
through Wednesday)...

A broad longwave trough with embedded shortwaves will exist over
the Southwest mainland through Wednesday. Light onshore flow this
morning has lead to widespread fog across coastal Bristol Bay and
the Kuskokwim Delta. This should dissipate underneath the March
sunshine by midday. Transient shortwaves aloft and unstable, cold
air moving over the Bering will continue the pattern of scattered
snow showers through Tuesday. On Wednesday a stronger and more
consolidated upper level low will move south through the Bering
Strait and into Southwest. This will bring a quick shot of snow
and blowing snow throughout the region as the system moves towards
the Gulf. Due to the quick-moving nature of this system, snow
totals are expected to be between one and two inches.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Monday through Wednesday)...

Northwesterly flow and show showers will persist over the eastern
Bering/Aleutians through Tuesday as a ridge builds over the
western Bering. A low is in a slow cyclogenesis process this
morning to the south of the Kamchatka Peninsula where the low
center will remain nearly stationary through Wednesday. The front
will reach the western Aleutians Tuesday afternoon with rain and
gale force winds expected. By Wednesday morning the front will be
considerably weaker as it passes over Adak, where it will begin
to dissipate as it reaches the central Bering/Aleutians.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Wednesday through Friday)...

Gulf: Broad low pressure is expected across the Gulf mid to late
week. A weak low pressure center lingers in the Gulf Wednesday and
Thursday, pushing south by Friday. Flow will light overall, with
mostly westerly south of the low center and variable towards the
North Gulf Coast. Friday morning, flow transitions to easterly for
the Southern Gulf as two more weak surface lows move just south
of the Gulf and into the North Pacific. Winds are expected to
remain light as both of these lows pass and small craft winds
likely with the second low.

Bering: A front off of a low complex near the Kamchatka Peninsula
pushes across the Bering towards the Southwest Coast through
Friday. Flow will be mostly southerly along and behind the front,
with small craft and gale force winds expected. As the low moves
over the Western Aleutians, stronger winds on the southern edge
of the low along the Western Aleutian Coasts are likely. There is
quite a bit of model inconsistency on the track of the low. One
solution keeps the low tracking across the northern Bering, while
the other two keep the low to the northwest. Impacts, however, are
likely to remain the same across the Bering and along the coasts.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Thursday through Sunday)...

Broad upper level troughing exists over the Interior and
Southcentral for the end of the week and into the weekend, while
upper level ridging is in place over the Southwest and eastern
Bering. This ridge starts to break down as a front off a low in
or near the northwestern Bering pushes the Southwest Coast. Model
spread is still large for this system, however, some solutions are
showing the ridge stalling the front in the eastern Bering,
keeping it from pushing onshore. Others show the front reaching
the coast and breaking the ridge apart. Impacts are largely
dependent on whether or not the front makes it to shore and will
need to be closely monitored over the next few days. Further east,
remnants of a weak low result in some lingering light precipitation
along the North Gulf Coast Thursday and Friday. A separate North
Pacific low approached the Eastern Aleutians on Friday, bringing a
round of light to moderate precipitation to the Eastern Aleutians
and Southern AKPEN. This low then tracks east toward the southern
Gulf, scooting just to the south, confining most of the precipitation
to the southern Gulf and Kodiak Island, with periods of light
snowfall possible along the North Gulf Coast, over the weekend.
