.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A broad upper level trough is in place over the mainland while an
upper level ridge is building over the Bering. The low that has
brought snowfall to Southcentral last night is gradually moving
southward and pulling away from the northern Gulf coast, leaving
only residual snow showers falling across the area. In the wake of
the low, gusty northerly flow and colder air is filling in across
interior Southwest and Southcentral. Farther west, a compact low
continues to traverse Southwest Alaska from northwest to
southeast, moving toward the interior Bristol Bay region this
afternoon. This has brought snow and blowing snow with gusty
northerly winds, especially across coastal locations.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Model solutions remain in generally good agreement for the short
term and there is good agreement in the track of a storm force low
over the western Bering lifting to the northern Bering Friday
afternoon. By Saturday, there are some slight differences in
timing as the associated front traversing the Bering lifts inland
over Southwest Alaska. By the beginning of next week, model
solutions are suggesting the formation of a low spinning up along
the frontal boundary as it moves eastward into the Gulf of Alaska.
There is generally good agreement across models with the timing
and track of the low moving into the Prince William Sound area
Monday into Tuesday.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions with gusty northerly winds are expected.
Residual snow showers may briefly bring conditions down to MVFR at
times this afternoon, however expect northerly flow and colder air
to clear any lingering showers by late evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 to 3)...

Eastern Turnagain Arm and Thompson Pass have a fresh batch of
"transportable snow" and blowing snow will be a serious concern
early this forecast period. The Kenai Radar (PAHG) and the
Middleton Island Radar (PAIH) both have light precipitation on
them this afternoon but the surface low over Prince William Sound
is slowly filling and weakening. Snow will taper off this
evening and tonight. The surface low will move southeastward. In
the wake of the frontal passage an upper level shortwave will push
over the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range ushering modified
Arctic air into Southcentral. Radiational cooling will also
impact the region. Expect lows temperatures below freezing in
numerous locations tomorrow morning and Saturday morning. Gap
winds and offshore winds will impact Barren Islands, Thompson
Pass, Valdez, and the Copper River Delta that will continue
through Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A compact polar low continues to move southeastward across the
northern Alaska Peninsula with a trough extending across the
southern Alaska Peninsula. This low and trough will bring a quick
burst of moderate to heavy snow across the area. A lightning
strike was reported at Saint Paul in conjunction with the GOES-17
Day Cloud Phase Distinction Band showing ample vertical growth of
cloud tops which is a good indicator of convection. Thus,
thundersnow cannot be ruled out for the Alaska Peninsula this
evening. Strong northwesterly winds will accompany this quick
hitting snow and reduce visibility to a half of a mile at times
with localized areas of a quarter mile or less. A Winter Weather
Advisory remains in effect. Winds continue to ease and visibility
continues to improve across the Kuskokwim Delta this evening. A
weak transient ridge of high pressure will move over Southwest
Alaska Friday and Saturday allowing for a temporary benign weather
pattern. The next occluded front will approach from the west
Saturday night into Sunday morning, bringing gale force south-
southeasterly winds along the coastal Kuskokwim Delta. Winds will
be locally higher at times in Etolin Strait due to the localized
funneling of winds. Snow will also accompany this front which will
help make for reduced visibility in conjunction with the strong
winds. The highest snowfall totals are expected in Bristol Bay,
though confidence is lower on the exact accumulations at this
time. The front will then exit to the east on Sunday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

An occluded front will bring widespread gale force winds to the
western Bering/Aleutians early this evening. Winds will increase
late this evening as the triple point moves across the area and
thus will bring a widespread area of storm force winds with
hurricane force gusts over the western Bering/Aleutians. The storm
force winds will continue to move northward and will reach the
northern Bering early Friday afternoon. The front will continue
eastward and produce widespread gale force winds across the
central Bering/Aleutians on Friday and the eastern
Bering/Aleutians on Saturday. This front will generate large
20-30ft long period swell in the western Bering Sea tonight
through Friday evening and then gradually abate thereafter.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Bering: A low and front moves across the northern Bering through
Tue. Model confidence is good. Widespread westerly small craft
winds and waves with areas of gale force winds become northerly
small craft winds with areas of gale force winds over the eastern
Bering Tue. Seas to 18 feet on the Pacific side, 15 feet on the
Bering side, subsiding Tue. A new low and front approach the
Western Aleutians and Bering for Tue.

Gulf: A low and front enter the Western Gulf Sun and move to the
Eastern Gulf for Tue. Model confidence is good. Widespread
southerly small craft winds and waves with areas of gale force
winds move with the front through Tue. The low tracks along the
North Gulf Coast, bringing barrier jet gale force winds through
the lower Cook Inlet and Barren Islands Sun into Mon, developing
into easterly storm force winds across the Gulf Coast Mon,
diminishing Tue. Seas with the front to 14 feet, subsiding late
Mon.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Monday through
Thursday)...

The long term forecast period will start off with a broad upper
level trough situated over the eastern Bering and Southwest
Alaska. An upper level ridge will be building in behind this over
the western Bering. The broad upper level trough will remain in
place though slowly being pushed southward into the North Pacific
moving into Wednesday as the upper level ridge tries to build in
across the Alaska Interior. As a result, the Monday and Tuesday
timeframe is expected to be quite active across Southcentral as
another potential low moves into Prince William Sound bringing
another round of snow to some of the same areas that were hit with
this last event. Depending on the exact placement of the upper
level low over the North Pacific and the strength of the upper
level ridge over the mainland will determine how far north any
storm system gets Wednesday and Thursday. As of now much of the
activity is expected to remain over the Gulf and potentially for
Kodiak Island while Southcentral remains dry. Overall, expect the
continued below temperatures through the period though warming a
little bit day by day closer to near average by Thursday. Continue
checking back for the latest forecast updates as any shift in the
placement of these upper level features will dictate what happens
at the surface.
