Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A warm front over Southwest Alaska continues to produce a variety
of mixed precipitation over that area and extending into
Southcentral as well. Generally, the farther south and west you
go, the more likely it's warm enough for rain. However, with the
overrunning of warm air over cold unfortunately means the
potential that some areas pick up some freezing rain. A Winter
Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6pm for the Western Kenai
Peninsula for minor ice accumulations due to freezing rain, which
even in small amounts are enough to make conditions slick in a
hurry. The 12Z Anchorage sounding shows a very dry layer in the
lower to mid-levels of the atmosphere, with a tiny fully saturated
layer remaining right next to the ground to account for the
freezing fog this morning.

Temperatures are generally not too far from the freezing mark
across Southwest Alaska, with the warmest temperatures south and
west. It's generally raining along the coast, mixed precipitation
a bit inland, and largely snow in the Lower Kuskokwim Valley.
Mixed precipitation has begun along the Kenai Peninsula and is
working it's way northward, but contending with the aforementioned
dry air in place.

A large upper level ridge is at its crest over nearly all of
southern Alaska and the Bering. A potent negatively tilted
shortwave associated with the warm front is digging into the ridge
over Southwest Alaska. A small 150 kt westerly jet streak extends
from the Pribilofs to near Bethel, with a larger 160 kt
northwesterly jet streak on the Yukon side of the Canadian border
extending into the Panhandle.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models remain in good agreement on the large-scale features
impacting southern Alaska. The primary point of disagreement
continues to be precipitation type, both with the event ongoing,
and with the next front expected to move into Southwest Alaska as
early as Friday afternoon. The timing of when snow may begin in
Anchorage and points north is also in question as the time it
takes for the snow to saturate the atmosphere is very difficult to
forecast. However, overall forecast confidence is good.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR to MVFR conditions are expected to develop as light
snow begins to develop over the terminal. Unlike this past
snowfall event, however, this one is expected to generally result
in light snowfall, that except in possible heavier snow showers is
not expected to produce long-lasting large reductions to
visibility. Accumulations at the airport are expected to remain at
less than half an inch, with a distinct possibility of no
measurable snowfall at all. Behind the snow, lingering moisture
will once again likely result in a period of lower ceilings with
fog and mist around, but as strong northwesterly winds develop
aloft behind the low, that should work to clear everything out,
returning the area to VFR conditions.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A potent shortwave aloft is riding along the northern periphery of
a ridge stationed over the North Pacific, moving from west to east.
At the surface, a warm front continues to advance towards
Southcentral, with freezing rain and drizzle being noted along
the Kenai Peninsula since this morning, and continuing through
this evening with a Winter Weather Advisory in place covering the
event. Elsewhere, generally calm and cloudy conditions exist under
areas of light precipitation as warm air aloft overrides the cold
air in place at the surface; precipitation will continue to take
the form of light snow over most of southcentral, and (very) light
rain over Kodiak Island.

The more notable feature to discuss occurs as the shortwave aloft
drops onto the eastern periphery of the ridge aloft tonight, with
pressure gradient increases noted at the surface by the early
morning hours. Areas familiar with increasing winds through gap
regions will see strong gusts set in, mainly along the Gulf Coast
and through the mountain passes, generally out of the west and
northwest. Strongest winds will be focused through the mountains
the wrap around the Prince William Sound with a few Strong Wind
Headlines in place through late Thursday night.

As the shortwave drops south and into the Gulf Friday, winds
diminish and Southcentral will see a brief period of calm before
the next system moves out of the North Pacific, moves across the
Aleutians, and moves inland. Increasing chances of precipitation
are expected Saturday with this system.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Saturday)...

The back end of a frontal system is now sweeping across Bristol
Bay and the Middle Kuskokwim Valley, with a push of west to
southwest flow now mixing down to the surface and changing most of
the remaining precipitation to rain in the immediate term for
most of Bristol Bay and the Y-K Delta. With the bulk of
precipitation ending and/or changing to rain in these areas, the
Winter Weather Advisories previously in effect for the wintry mix
of precipitation have been allowed to expire this afternoon.
Meanwhile, A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through
this evening for the Middle Kuskokwim Valley, where temperatures
have remained cold enough to keep things falling as mostly snow.
Occasional periods of mixing with sleet and freezing rain are
possible here due to the warm nose of air above freezing aloft
jutting out ahead of the front before quickly ending or switching
back to light snow as the front moves past and ushers in much cooler
temperatures just above the surface later tonight. Closer to the
coast, areas of fog may develop overnight where subsidence on the
eastern periphery of a strong ridge over the Bering forms a low
level inversion and traps moisture left behind by the precipitation
mostly ending this evening.

Expect a relative lull in the weather for much of Thursday as
upper level ridging amplifies and expands farther into Southwest
AK, with slightly cooler and dry conditions expected for all but
parts of the Kilbucks and western Alaska range where moisture may
continue to be squeezed out in the form of snow with upslope flow
and a with a couple weak shortwaves traversing the increasingly
west to northwest flow in the upper levels. By early Friday, a low
moving around the ridge into the western Bering will send another
front onshore, bringing initially light/showery precipitation
across the Y-K Delta Friday morning. Once again, a corridor of
warm air aloft moving with the front will bring concerns for mixed
precipitation to parts of the area, particularly with the leading
edge of the frontal precip as it begins to spread inland from
northwest to southeast through Saturday morning. When and where
any freezing rain and sleet potential exists will again depend on
whether air near the surface can remain at or below freezing
before the onset, with a transition to all rain likely progressing
from west to east as temperatures warm back above freezing
through Saturday. Check back for more updates on this system as
details for timing and return threat for wintry mix become more
defined.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Wednesday through Friday)...

High pressure will remain firmly anchored in place over the next
few days over the eastern two-thirds of the area, with mostly dry
and calm conditions over the Eastern Aleutians and southern Alaska
Peninsula. The ridge will keep the more active weather and low
track out in the western part of the forecast area, with two
systems bringing rain and south to southwest winds across the
western Bering/Aleutians between Thursday and Saturday. The first
system will bring mainly small craft to low-end southerly gales
across as it moves north into the far western Bering on Friday,
with winds and mainly rain spreading into the central Bering and
Pribilofs by Friday afternoon. Another somewhat stronger system
will move in behind the then dissipating first system for
Saturday, with solid gales and more rain spreading into the
central and western Bering/Aleutians by midday Saturday. Some
uncertainty remains for this next system, with higher winds near
storm force not out of the question as the low and trailing front
lift north near the western Aleutians by Saturday afternoon.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5 - Saturday through Monday)...

Bering...A well developed North Pacific low intensifies as it
moves to North Kamchatka Sunday, then weakens as it continues into
the Chukchi Sea by Monday. A front extends across the Western
Aleutians through Monday. Forecast confidence is moderate for the
low tracks through Monday. Gusty winds increase to widespread high
end gales with areas of storm force winds across the Western and
Central Bering late Sunday, diminishing Monday as it moves into
the Chukchi Sea. Seas building to 22 feet over the Bering Sunday,
subsiding Monday. A new North Pacific low approaches the Western
Bering late Sunday. Widespread high end gales with areas of storm
force winds spread to the Central Bering by Monday. Seas building
to 34 feet over the Western Bering, and to 22 feet for the Pacific
side of the Aleutians through Monday.

Gulf of Alaska...Low pressure continues over the Eastern Gulf
through Monday. Forecast confidence is moderate with pressure
differences over the Gulf. Gusty Westerly winds spread across the
Southwestern Gulf through Monday. Gap winds from the Alaska
Peninsula increase to gales into the Gulf for Monday. Seas
building to 12 feet over the Southern Gulf by Monday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Sunday through Wednesday)...

Global models share very similar large scale synoptic solutions
consisting of the Omega Blocking pattern and the onset of a few
strong Northwest Pacific and Siberian lows transiting across the
Bering into Southwest Alaska through the middle of next week.
Multiple fronts will bring gales and potentially near storm-force
winds across the Bering/Aleutians through much of the long term.
Considering the warm tropical moisture and warm southwest winds
pulling behind the fronts, the potential for rainfall is favorable
over the Aleutians/Bering, with rain/snow mix more inland of
Southwest Alaska from the expected frontal systems. P-type
forecast could be a challenge, but as solutions continue to
improve over time, perhaps we'll see better P-type agreements in
future model runs. Over the Gulf and Southcentral, latest solutions
suggest very light snow to an absolutely quiet pattern there
until Wednesday when a transitional front turned-into an open
trough shifts over the western Gulf, leading to increased NW winds
along the Shelikof Strait and Kamishak Bay through the Barren
Islands. The potential for gap winds is favorable as well over
Southcentral coastal areas should weakening fronts from Southwest
Alaska drives past the Alaska Range into Southcentral. For now,
will monitor these episodes closely.

The upper ridge axis will provide mostly clear skies and light
winds at night as it drifts from Southwest to Southcentral through
Wednesday. The potential for widespread foggy conditions should be
closely monitored as well especially when there's subsidence air
passing through the entirety of the forecast period.
