Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Latest upper analysis depicts a split-flow pattern, with a long-wave
trough and the polar jet stream dipping down into Southcentral
and a subtropical jet stream further south extending from the
North Pacific into the Gulf. Within this southwesterly flow a pair
of shortwave troughs, noted on water vapor imagery and responsible
for this morning's rainfall, are exiting Southcentral to the
east. Rainfall is generally diminishing across Southcentral with
the exit of these waves, though rain is lingering along the south
to west side of mountain ranges in weak upslope flow. Meanwhile,
a surface low is drifting slowly eastward across the northern
Gulf, with a barrier jet in the usual position between
Hinchinbrook Entrance and Cape Suckling. Winds peaked at gale
force earlier today and are in the process of diminishing.

Farther west, areas of clearing are noted across the Kuskokwim
Delta and portions of Bristol Bay as a drier air mass moves into
the region beneath weak high pressure. CIMSS MIMIC imagery showing
tropical moisture associated with the southern jet stream is
pushing out of the forecast area into Southeast Alaska, though a
stationary boundary of high precipitable water values approaching
1" remains, extending from the Kenai Peninsula southwestward along
the Alaska Peninsula. Consequently, areas of low stratus and fog
will continue to be a potential impact across the entirety of the
forecast area. On a positive note, despite widespread cloudiness
from west to east, overall conditions should prove quiet with
calmer winds.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

There continues to be good overall agreement between models this
period. Confidence is high that a North Pacific low south of the
Aleutians will deepen over the next couple of days and help to
amplify a ridge of high pressure south of the AKPen through the
end of the week. To the north, numerical guidance suggests that a
low pressure center currently over the northern Bering will impact
Southcentral Thursday into Friday. Some discrepancies between
models exist with regard to overall intensity of this low as it
approaches western Alaska. The GFS had been the stronger solution
the past couple days, but recent runs have come into somewhat
better agreement with the GFS trending weaker and the
NAM/EC/Canadian trending stronger. Thus, overall confidence in
the wind forecast is increasing.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Rain and light winds have largely tapered off this
afternoon with VFR conditions expected through the evening hours
into tomorrow morning. Recent model guidance does indicate
passage of a weak upper level short-wave late tonight through
Wednesday morning. While meaningful rain chances are not anticipated,
with a still moist low level atmosphere, there is some concern
that ceilings could lower slightly sometime during the morning
hours on Wednesday. For now, will continue with VFR forecast but
there is potential for marginal conditions.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Friday)...

WV satellite imagery highlights a broad area of heavy moisture
wrapped across eastern Kenai Peninsula through Prince William
Sound (PWS) to the southern portion of Copper River Basin
including Chitina and McCarthy. Behind this layer lies a pocket of
dry air with RH dropped to the lower to mid 50s this afternoon.
Farther northwest, a shortwave embedded within an upper level
trough will dip southeastward, causing light rain to spread mainly
over higher elevations especially across Copper River Basin by
early Wednesday morning. Light and variable winds and cooler
temperatures tonight and Wednesday morning along eastern PWS and
around the coast of Kenai Peninsula will cause patchy fog to
wrap around the coastal areas of Valdez through Cordova, and from
Homer through Kenai starting after midnight tonight into the
early hours of Wednesday morning. As clouds exit PWS tonight into
Wednesday morning, more clouds from upstream will transit across
Southcentral around midnight tonight through Wednesday afternoon
before the rest of Southcentral encounters a nice break from
precipitation until Thursday night.

A developing ridge from eastern Bering will steer dry, warm air
across Southcentral between Wednesday and Thursday before the next
series of shortwaves approach the region starting Thursday night.
Solutions are directing a lot of upper-level dynamics and stronger
winds across Southcentral and the Gulf of Alaska as a result of
the next robust upper level trough moving through the area through
Friday. Though the arrival timing of precipitation could be a
challenge, but models are gradually aligning well by suggesting
the bulk of moisture and rainfall to enter as early as Thursday
evening. Stay tuned!

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: tonight
through Friday)...

Fair weather is expected across the Southwest Mainland today and
tomorrow with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 60's.
The pattern looks to shift by Wednesday night as a low moving
across the northern Bering reaches the Kuskokwim Delta.
Once the system moves onshore, light precipitation moves from
west to east across Southwest through Thursday afternoon before
becoming mostly hung up along the higher elevations of the Alaska
Range and Kuskokwim Mountains. On the backside of the low, there
is a swath of colder upper level air from the Arctic that gets
wrapped around the low and advected over Southwest Alaska by
Thursday afternoon. Thus, expect temperatures to be in a steady
decline over the next few days, with temperatures dropping into
the mid-to-upper 50's Thursday and Friday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
tonight through Friday)...

A vertically stacked Russian low pushes into the northern Bering
late tonight, bringing a round of small craft winds and moderate
rainfall with it. By early Thursday morning, colder upper level
Arctic air wraps around the low, aiding in strengthening the
winds on the backside of the system. Expect a period of gale force
winds in the southwest section of the low by late Thursday morning
as it pushes towards the Norton Sound. Early Friday morning, a
separate low moves out of the south and over the Aleutian Islands.
There is some uncertainty with the strength of this system, but
as it stands now, expect at least high end small craft winds along
the coastal waters of the Central and Eastern Aleutians, as well
as moderate to heavy rounds of precipitation. Gale force gusts are
likely and are expected to persists through Friday afternoon.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5/Friday through Sunday)...

A surge of cold air advection, indicative of the lateness of the
summer season, will cross the western Gulf on Friday along the
south side of a storm system crossing interior Alaska. Confidence
is now high for winds to reach gale force from Kamishak Bay, the
Barren Islands and out into the Gulf. This looks to be short-
lived, with winds expected to quickly diminish Friday night.

Meanwhile, a new storm will track from the north-central pacific
northward to the Aleutians on Friday, then slowly make it's way to
the eastern Bering Sea on Sunday. It looks like this storm will
reach it's strongest point as it nears the Aleutians. Expect high
end small craft advisory winds, with some potential for gale
force winds near the low center. The low will be in a weakening
state as it continues into the Bering Sea, so winds should remain
safely below gale force.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Saturday through Tuesday)...

Beginning Saturday, a high amplitude pattern will be in place with
a vertically stacked low and trough centered over the southern
Bering Sea and a downstream ridge crossing southern Alaska. With
progressive upper level flow, expect the Bering storm system to
track toward the southern mainland, with widespread rain spreading
across Southwest Alaska Saturday afternoon through Saturday night,
then across Southcentral Alaska on Sunday. This system will
originate in the tropical Pacific and dynamics look moderate to
strong. Thus, would expect moderate to heavy rainfall and some
large rainfall amounts, as we heave seen with many storm systems
this month.

The leading ridge will connect up with a separate ridge over
Canada Sunday night. This new higher amplitude ridge will serve
to block the flow. As a result, the upper trough will stall over
southern Alaska early next week. A series of short-wave troughs
moving through the long-wave trough will maintain a wet pattern
across the eastern Bering Sea and southern Alaska. Forecast
confidence starts out high with the storm system over the weekend,
then drops a bit Monday-Tuesday, largely due to the inability to
track specific short-waves this far out. However, as mentioned,
this pattern supports wet conditions and cool temperatures.
