.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The remnants of an occluded front that came ashore from the Gulf
have now moved well inland as little more than an arc of stratus
stretching from the Southwest to the eastern Alaska Range.
Southerly, onshore flow is continuing south of this frontal
remnant, with areas of fog and low stratus encroaching from the
Gulf into parts of the North Gulf Coast and along eastern shores
of Kodiak Island. In the upper levels, a blocking ridge that has
been in place for the past several days has now shifted east into
British Columbia and the Yukon. The portion of the ridge extending
into the mainland is being eroded by two separate features moving
in nearly opposite directions. The first of these is a westerly
Arctic trough moving across the Brooks Range and Yukon Flats that
may become a minor weather maker across parts of the Copper River
Basin later today. The second feature is an easterly wave moving
into the Southwest and eastern Bering that is embedded in a large,
stacked low that continues to meander over the North Pacific to
the south of the Eastern Aleutians. This complex low is bringing a
broad swath of northeasterly winds to the Bering, mainly small
craft or lower for the time being. Otherwise, generally quiet
conditions are persisting for much of the AOR this morning.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in very good agreement with all large scale features
over the next few days, and overall forecast confidence remains
high. The agreement for the track and timing of an Arctic trough
traversing the the interior has also improved, with a consensus
emerging for the wave to remain farther north than some earlier
solutions indicated as it approaches the AlCan border by tonight.
This should limit most of the showery precipitation through
tonight to the Copper River Basin and Wrangells, with otherwise
little impact now anticipated from this feature.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions will persist. Southeast winds being
funneled through the Turnagain Arm should continue to diminish
through midday as the upper level support for this wind wanes.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The remains of the warm front that moved over Southcentral
yesterday evening are near the Alaska Range this morning where
they are meeting up with an upper level short wave diving down
from the Interior. Neither of these features had much in the way
of precip, just clouds, as they have traversed the state from
opposite directions. However, once they meet, it is likely that
the moisture from the warm front and the lift from the shortwave
will bring some light rain into the Copper River Basin today. It
looks like this rain should be mainly relegated to the Talkeetna
Mountains eastward. However, there is a small chance it could be
as far west as the Susitna Valley.

A low moving into the Southwestern Gulf is pushing some rain into
Kodiak. For this morning, the North Gulf coast is under weak high
pressure and onshore flow which is bringing some fog and stratus
into the area. As the low approaches from the south it should help
lessen the fog, though lower clouds may remain.

The upper level high should re-assert itself tomorrow and bring
back the sunny weather. Temperatures will remain above normal for
the next few days.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Thursday)...

An upper-level ridge will provide clear to partly cloudy skies
and dry conditions over Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and south of
the Kuskokwim Valley through Thursday. Meanwhile, a series of
shortwaves from south of AKPEN will bring increased moisture
combined with warmer temperatures across Bristol Bay and AKPEN,
causing considerable amount of rainfall to spread across AKPEN
with only minimal amounts over Bristol Bay in the next couple
days. All in all, it will be a relatively quiet forecast period.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Thursday)...

A stacked North Pacific low south of the Aleutians will be the
main weather influencer for the area in the coming days. Strongest
gales will be felt along the south of Dutch Harbor, with the
stronger gusts passing near the coasts and gaps of the Aleutians.
More rain bands from the low will sweep through the Aleutians and
Pribilof Islands, while warm temperatures passes north of the
Aleutians and across the central/northern Bering through the
short-term. Overall, anticipate gusty and wet conditions to
persist until the low tapers off Thursday night.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

Confidence remains high that another North Pacific low will move
just south of the Aleutian Chain Thursday. Easterly gale force
winds will accompany this low, though confidence is moderate that
south of the Aleutian Chain may experience low end easterly storm
force winds. That low will weaken through Saturday as another low
end gale force weather front moves in from the north pacific into
Sunday.

.Long Term Forecast (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

The block(y) pattern will continue into the longterm. The main
upper level ridge that rests across much of Alaska (and is
anchored across the northern half of the state) will be a
mainstay. As one North Pacific low weakens on Saturday, another
builds in from the west. The blocking ridge will prevent most of
the mainland from being impacted by significant weather, though
the Aleutian Chain will be stuck in the pattern of system after
system. Much of south central will benefit from the spring
sunshine. Daytime temperatures should be well above normal for
this time of year (mid to upper 40s) though overnight lows will be
close to normal (low 30s) when skies clear out. If we have a
layer of clouds (even thin), it will act like a cozy blanket,
keeping overnight lows elevated.
