time with a dry northerly wind, questions remain about how far
north the snow can get.

Surface high pressure is currently sliding east of the region as a
low pressure system noses in from the west, with a warm front
setting up over the South Dakota/Nebraska border early this morning.
The CWA will remain on the cold side of this boundary today. The
main low center with this system will track from eastern Wyoming to
eastern Colorado/Kansas tonight as high pressure begins to nose back
in from the northwest. Aided by some mid level shortwave energy, may
see some light snow develop between the exiting low and the
approaching high on Friday, mainly across the southern part of the
CWA. At this time, snow accumulation look to be minimal, with an
inch or two at the most south of Highway 212, most of which looks to
occur Friday morning.

Very cold air will remain in place across much of the CWA during the
short term period. Highs temperatures today will range from the
single digits across the northern James River Valley, to the mid 20s
along and south of Interstate 90. Low temperatures tonight will
generally be in the single digits below to the lower teens below
zero, with just slightly warmer lows right around zero across south
central South Dakota. Highs on Friday will be on either side of zero
along and north of Highway 12, and in the single digits above zero
elsewhere. Wind chills may fall into advisory criteria across the
northern CWA during the day Friday as wind speeds increase due to a
tightening pressure gradient. Will not issue any headlines at this
point and let later shifts get a better feel for where a headline
may be needed.

.LONG TERM...(Friday Evening through Wednesday)

The main concern in the extended period focuses on the bitterly cold
air over the region Friday night through Saturday night. Lows Friday
night still forecast to be in the teens below and 20s below zero.
There may be an opportunity to drop lows even a few more degrees in
favored cold spots where there is also appreciable snow cover.
Although, there are some indications of patches of cloud cover, so
will wait until later shifts to make any temp adjustments once cloud
trends are better known. Will likely need wind chill headlines as
well Friday night into Sunday morning, although I don't expect winds
to be very strong with the high pressure moving overhead. In fact,
there will probably be times when we drop below the 5 mph threshold
for valley areas especially. A warming trend is still in store
Sunday through Tuesday of next week as highs rebound into the 20s
and 30s for many areas. Models do indicate another shot of arctic
air moving into the region by the middle of next week.

Mostly dry conditions remain in the forecast through the period.
There are still hints of a system affecting the northern plains by
Day 6 and/or 7 of the extended period. Inherited POPs indicating
slight/low chance look good for the time being until better clarity
is reached.
