Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 221 AM MST Mon Dec 13 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A warming trend will continue into Tuesday, with above normal temperatures across central and western New Mexico and well above normal temperatures across eastern portions of the state. A strong Pacific storm will race east across the southern Rockies and New Mexico late Tuesday night through Wednesday, bringing strong to damaging winds to much of the area and some accumulating snow to the northern mountains. Blowing dust and tumbleweeds will be common across central and eastern New Mexico on Wednesday. Conditions will improve by Thursday, but colder temperatures are forecast going into the weekend with the potential for more unsettled weather. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY)... Water vapor imagery this morning shows a storm system taking shape off the PacNW coast. Ahead of this feature, flow aloft over NM turns southwesterly today, but it will still remain very dry areawide. Current dewpoints are in the single digits to teens areawide with again some subzero dewpoints across portions of northern NM. Fairly similar weather conditions from yesterday are in store today with high temperatures a couple degrees warmer. Another lee-side low over northeast NM and 700mb winds strengthening to about 30-35 knots along the Sangre de Cristos and Central Highlands will again lead to breezy afternoon winds across east central NM, but advisory criteria is not expected to be met today. Otherwise, expect some high clouds to begin streaming in from the west later on this afternoon ahead of the aforementioned system. By Tuesday, the storm system deepens as it moves inland onto the west coast, and southwesterly flow over NM begins to strengthen. Moisture streaming into western NM ahead of it will begin to develop light rain and mountain snow showers (snow levels at 8500-9000 feet) along and west of the Continental Divide and across the Tusas Mountains. The strongest 700mb winds of 40-45 knots look to be concentrated along a corridor from the southwest mountains through northeast NM. As such, surface winds pick up in response with widespread breezy and gusty southwest winds, especially along the western high terrain and the eastern plains. Won't rule out brief advisory speeds across the high terrain, particularly the Sangre de Cristos, however, this will only be the appetizer for what are sure to be much, much stronger winds at the start of the long term period. LONG TERM...(TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY)... Moisture advection will peak Tuesday night in advance of the approaching potent Pacific trough/low, with a decent shot at showers across western portions of our area. Very strong winds aloft will shift over the area Tuesday night in advance of the trough, with strong orographic uplift forecast across the Tusas, Chuska and southwest mountains resulting is persistent showers with high terrain snow. Winds have a decent shot at hitting advisory speeds late Tuesday night across much of the area, with the potential for warning speeds across the higher terrain as a 130kt jet stream moves overhead. However, the most impressive speeds will definitely be observed Wednesday as we head into a high confidence high wind event given a strong signal from the models with solid run-to-run consistency. The scenario is a strong jet maxima pulling out ahead of the upper low, leading to rapid lee side cyclogenesis early Wednesday across eastern CO. Meanwhile, a secondary jet maxima will be moving directly east behind the racing upper low with downward forcing of strong winds aloft across north central and northeast NM. In fact, the NAEFS mean wind speed standardized anomalies are attention-grabbing, with 700mb speeds 4-5 standard deviations above normal across the northeast quarter of the state. The 00Z operational run of the GFS shows 700mb wind speeds of 85kts from the northern mountains east to the TX/OK borders Wednesday. These impressive speeds have worked their way into the 00Z GFS and NAM MOS for most of our sites. The 00Z NAM MOS is most bullish showing 51kts sustained at KLVS at 18Z Wednesday, with 48kts at KCAO. The GFS MOS is lower, but still easily over high wind warning threshold. The 00Z GFS is most bullish on the lee side cyclogenesis and shows a 130kt jet at 300mb on the backside of the low over our northern mountain at 18Z Wednesday...moving normal to the orientation of the terrain and with downward forcing. This is a high confidence damaging wind scenario that has the potential to down power lines, damage roofs, topple trains and high profile vehicles across northeast and north central NM. Will go with a 5th period High Wind Watch in concert with our neighbors to the north and east. This watch may need to be expanded in area and in time given new model data. Accumulating snow will be a secondary consideration with this event, with the northern mountains likely to pick up a few inches and the Tusas once again having the best shot given strong orographic forcing there. Blowing snow will be more of a concern than accumulations and has the potential to shut down travel in the northern mountains. Colder condtions will prevail in the wake of the departing trough on Thursday, but the forecast is fairly muddled thereafter with differences in the modeling of the next upper low showing in the 00Z runs once again. The GFS is trending toward the drier ECWMF, so we may be looking at increasing cloud cover and colder temperatures over the weekend with little to no chance for precipitation. The pattern will remain active thereafter, with the most impressive upper low so far this season diving south offshore of CA early next week. 15/11 && .FIRE WEATHER... Very dry conditions are again in store today across the northeast plains where 5 to 8 hours of single digit RHs are expected this afternoon and evening. Another round of breezy afternoon winds are also expected, primarily across east central NM. Much like yesterday, spotty critical fire weather conditions will be possible across portions of east central and northeast NM, however, conditions are not widespread enough for any highlights. Winds continue to strengthen on Tuesday ahead of an approaching storm system, leading to perhaps more spotty critical fire weather conditions in eastern Union County where minRHS remain just below 15 percent. That storm system finally arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing the possibility of wetting precipitation to portions of western and northern NM. However, it's the wind that will be the bigger impact with widespread windy conditions and even damaging winds along and east of the central mountain chain. This may lead to continued critical fire weather conditions across the northeast plains which may miss out on precipitation. Winds diminish late Wednesday night with Thursday featuring quieter conditions with less wind.
