Windy conditions along with some rain, mountain snow and a few
rumbles of thunder will continue through this evening.
Accumulating snow is expected along the Divide Tuesday morning as
another fast moving system approaches from the west. The showers
and mountain snow will expand to include the remainder of the
region Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning along with another
round of potentially strong and gusty winds. Quieter conditions
are expected for the Thursday and Friday but colder and unsettled
weather may return for the weekend.

Some showers continue to affect portions of north central Montana
this evening but widespread strong and gusty winds have diminished.
Forecast appears to be on-track with some clearing expected
overnight before the next system moves into the region early

VFR conditions are expected to persist across all terminals through
15z Tuesday, and thereafter rain and/or snow is expected to begin to
increase in areal coverage from west to east for the remainder of
the morning and into the afternoon. In addition to increasing
chances of precipitation, CIGS are expected lower to near-MVFR
between 15z-21z Tuesday, with even some periods of MVFR conditions
possible in areas of heavier precipitation. A very strong mid-level
jet is then expected to begin to move over the Northern Rockies
after 21z Tueday; which will lead to increasing surface winds, low-
level wind shear, and mountain wave turbulence. Mountains will
become increasingly obscured Tuesday morning due to lowering CIGS,

westerly flow aloft continues to deliver gusty westerly surface

moderate downpours of rain. This activity is expected to continue
into the evening hours, before diminishing as daytime heating
fades. The High Wind warning will be allowed to continue since
sustained winds and gusts remain in striking distance of criteria
values. Tonight there will be a brief period of quiet weather as
transient ridging quickly traverses the region. The first sign of
the next weather maker will be felt along the Divide Tuesday
morning as a brief period of accumulating snow develops for
locations above 5000 ft. The Winter Weather Advisory still looks
good as it appears there can be some impacts to travel and outdoor
interest before the warmer air moves in and inhibits snow
accumulation. This area of precipitation then moves over the
remainder of the CWA by Tuesday afternoon but snow levels are
expected to rise above 7000 ft by afternoon. The focus will then
begin to shift toward the potential strong winds from Tuesday
afternoon into Wednesday morning as a wide swath of very strong
upper level winds move into North-central and Southwest Montana.
There is still some uncertainty on whether these winds will
transfer to the surface wind gusts in excess of 60 mph is
possible, especially over higher terrain. Am especially concerned
about areas south and west of a Lewistown, to Great Falls, to Cut
Bank line where the strongest H700 winds of 50-70kts will reside
through Wednesday morning; which could make travel over mountain
passes like MacDonald, Bozeman, Norris Hill, and Deep Creek
hazardous as this looks like an ideal setup for high winds to
materialize given a strong west- to-east flow. Given the
situation, the current High Wind Watch will continue. Late
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, snow levels begin to fall
once a gain as colder air fill in on the back side of the system.
This is when some lower elevation locations may see some light
accumulating snow over portions of North- central Montana, in
addition to locations along the divide and the Central Mountains.
Snowfall accumulations of 3-6" appear possible along the
Continental Divide and in the mountains of Central and North
Central Montana during the day on Wednesday, with even a dusting
to up upwards of 2" over portions of the plains (highest amounts
along the Montana Hwy 200 corridor). Winter Weather Advisory will
be considered by future shifts as they get a better look at the
situation. In addition to precipitation, another bout of
potentially high wind criteria wind speeds/gusts will also be
possible during the morning and early afternoon hours across
nearly the entire CWA (save for the Hi-Line east of Shelby). Winds
and precipitation chances will then decrease through Wednesday
night as H500 ridging attempts to slide east from the Eastern
Pacific, giving way for relatively quite conditions from Thursday
through Thursday night. RCG

Friday through next Monday...a great deal of uncertainty still
exists to end the work week and into the weekended regarding
whether the aforementioned H500 ridge will build east, or if a
shortwave diving southeast within northwesterly flow aloft move
over the Northern Rockies and usher in colder temperatures and
additional precipitation chances. This uncertainty is reflected
well with the spread in temperatures between the 25th and 75th
percentiles of the NBM guidance, especially on Saturday and Sunday
when difference of 20 to nearly 30 degrees exists between the two
percentiles. Should the H500 ridge stay further to the west and
allow a strong shortwave diving southeast from the Gulf of Alaska,
much of the Northern Rockies could expect significantly colder
air to work into the region and the potential for accumulating
snow at all elevations. - Moldan
