Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 451 AM MDT Wed Sep 9 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 447 AM MDT Wed Sep 9 2020 The upper level low pressure center is located over southeastern Utah at the beginning of the short term forecast period (6am Wednesday). The forecast is for the low to retrograde to the southwest reaching the Arizona and Utah border by the afternoon into the evening. When the low retrogrades, the main QG forcings shift towards the west. Small vorticity maximas will propagate over the far eastern plains, which will keep scattered PoPs over the adjacent plains, whereas vorticity maximas and upper level divergence will keep likely PoPs over the far eastern plains, near the Kansas border. There will be a lull in precipitation over the mountains and mountain valleys as the low retrogrades, but as the low stalls near the Utah and Arizona border, QG lift and orographic lift will start the heavy snowfall over the eastern San Juan, La Garita, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains once again. The fresh snowfall over the San Luis Valley and Wet Mountain Valley should keep temperatures at or slightly above freezing throughout the day, as apposed to the 40F high temperatures that model output is presenting, so any additional precipitation over the mountain valleys should fall mostly as snow throughout the day. The upper level low will begin to propagate to the northeast by the end of the day today. During the overnight, there is freezing rain concerns primarily over the southern I-25 corridor, but there is a low end chance for freezing rain to occur over the northern I-25 corridor as well. As the low propagates to the northeast it will create a warm nose above freezing above the subfreezing temperatures over the southern I-25 corridor, leading to the freezing rain. Roads should remain warm enough for the ice to not accumulate, but if it does there is the potential for hazardous travel conditions. Thursday morning will be another night below freezing across the San Luis Valley and the I-25 corridor, since we have already issued a Freeze Warning, we will not issue another one at this time. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 447 AM MDT Wed Sep 9 2020 As the main upper level low remains situated just to the west at the start of the period, precip chances will continue across a good portion of southern Colorado. Guidance in fair agreement with the upper jet continuing to push into southern CO Thursday morning, while a fairly stout mid level wave rounds the base of this low. In this setup, snow expected to continue across the higher terrain, as an area of precip lifts across the plains. At this time, highest chances look to be more over the far eastern plains. Anticipated thermal profiles in this location will support rain, while locations closer to the I-25 corridor look to be slightly cooler. So, some potential for a rain snow mix across parts of the I-25 corridor though drier conditions in place will likely limit over precip development and potential for crystals. Locations across the far southern I-25 corridor could see a wintry mix through mid morning, which may be in the form of light freezing rain. However, warming temps through mid morning should help limit this risk. This system finally begins to lift north/northeast Thursday into Thursday night, with precip chances lowering for all locations. However, some potential for precip to linger across the higher terrain into part of Thursday night, as well as some light showery development over the far eastern plains ahead of upper and surface troughs. With cyclonic flow aloft and upper low/trough axis swinging through on Friday, additional showers and maybe a thunderstorm or two will be possible across the far eastern plains. However, at this time, the higher focus looks to be to the east. Drier weather with a warming trend then expected into the weekend. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning) Issued at 447 AM MDT Wed Sep 9 2020 KALS: Snowfall is expected throughout the morning keeping cigs/viz at IFR/LIFR, but by mid day, snow should halt temporarily, increasing cigs/viz up to VFR. During the late evening and overnight another wave of snow will form over the forecast terminal, bringing cigs/viz back down to IFR/LIFR. It will snow during the early morning on Thursday, but should dissipate by sunrise.
